Hello everyone, I want to take up some type of fighting sport such as boxing or something. I want something that will help me lose weight and build up. What is the best sport to learn? Can I get some advice? Thanks.

Age is an issue, as is strength of joints. You might add that info.

Fencing...... no sorry not my kind of thing. And I don't play paintball but I do airsoft.

Swimming really is a good way to loose weight.

As far as sports that involve fighting, Id say whatever it is those cage fighters do. Thats some pretty intense activity to say the least

fencing is amazing, especially when you move up to rapier fencing. I stopped at that, and can no longer do it, due to my knee an heroing itself.

Tho I gotta say, those first years, you should be burning a lot of calories doing naked mixed-doubles pushups...

And so, due to rising costs of maintaining the Golden Throne, the Emperor's finest accountants spoke to the Demigurg. A deal was forged in blood and extensive paperwork for a sub-prime mortgage with a 5/1 ARM on the Imperial Palace. And lo, in the following years the housing market did tumble and the rate skyrocketed leaving the Emperor's coffers bare. A dark time has begun for the Imperium, the tithes can not keep up with the balloon payments and the Imperial Palace and its contents, including the Golden Throne, have fallen into foreclosure. With an impending auction on the horizon mankind holds its breath as it waits to see who will gain possession of the corpse-god and thus, the fate of humanity......

Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. It's similar to boxing in that you have to actually spar and use the martial art to the best of your ability whilst training. This means that you can apply it in real life if you need to.

I almost always agree with Albatross, I can't see why anyone wouldn't.

I worked out 2 hours a day 5 days a week every week of school for the last 4 years (I was in a weights class untill I graduated). I would suggest just doing a basic work out to get started, to fight in any form (especially MMA) you need to be in fairly good shape to start out or else you won't be able to keep up with the training of your chosen sport.

Running and swimming is good but you also need to mix it up. A great workout we used to do for cardio is to do 300 jump ropes with a 45 pound weighted vest on and in between every 100 jumps we would do a 2 foot box jump 25 times. It kills your legs BUT we where also experienced lifters. So jump rope is a good cardio work out which will make it easier to do every thing else.

Just remember to keep yourself energised (food and water), to give your muscles time to heal (if you worked out your legs one day do your arms the next etc.), and switch it up. The more extreme circumstances (not dangerous though) you put your body through the more it will adapt and you'll be better prepared for a fighting sport. As far as an actual sport to try when you get into it I would say Muy Thai if you can get into it.

If you've never taken any fighting classes before, boxing is probably the best way to get your foot in the door, and learn how to take hits. It's very easy to learn, and focuses on upper body strength, cardio, and toughness training. All three are things you're going to need if you want to expand, so getting a good start on those areas would be smart.

If you're looking to learn a fighting sport, wrestling without a doubt should be high on that list.

It's pretty easy to learn the basics (stance, takedowns, tie ups, basic thorws). Wrestling training mixes cardio, strength, endurance, and flexibility exercises(at least in my experiance)
so it can really help you lose weight/build muscle, depending on what you're looking for.

As well as probaly being one of the oldest hand to hand combat forms known to man, it's incredibly effective in a real fight.
Everybody knows how to throw punches and kicks, but how well do you really know how to grapple?

In the fights I've been in (and the sparring matches my friends and I have had), wrestling techniques will work time and again, because they are simple and easy to learn.

Try intramural wrestling first, then, if you want to, join the wrestling team. But be prepared to work your ass off if you do.

Meh, I don't want to be on the ground if somebody attacks me.

Really, it doesn't matter too much which martial art you pick. Just make sure that whatever place teaches it is serious about it.

My, you've come a long way, GES!

I agree, OP, get wrasslin'!

I did karate and aikido throughout my youth, and was also "fortunate" enough to have to work on a farm... shortly after I left home for university and stuff, I actually lost ten kilograms... of muscle. I know nothing about intentionally losing weight, but I suspect it has something to do with partying a whole lot, eating crap food and doing nothing.
