So recently, as I was sitting and pondering the mysteries of the universe (I.E. Just woke up) I was thinking, is being a wargamer filled with too much drama?

I mean, GW has this storm surrounding it, all of its fans arguing for or against it. People complain about army balance, rules writing, and etc. Privateer has its own set of problems, with accusations of elitism aimed at the player-base.

Are we as a community of wargamers too high-strung?

Some people play to win, some people play for fun. Me? I play to kill toy soldiers.

Human nature. If we don't have something to argue about, we get bored, and that's when we get things like reality television and the Airbender movie.

Indubitably!

Though thankfully I don't include myself or anyone else I personally share the hobby with in that catagory.

Definitely. Certainly recent issues spread so much because of the wide reach of the internet. Local issues become national ones. Just look at what is going down at Jacksonville - small local issue on multiple sites.

2014 will be the year of zero GW purchases. Kneadite instead of GS, no paints or models. 2014 will be the year I finally make the move to military models and away from miniature games.

We have an old "proverb" in the army that basically says, "If your soldiers aren't complaining about SOMETHING, beware because they are probably plotting against you"

Of course, i honestly think that war gaming attracts a certain type of person, and generally these folks are somewhat high strung (at least they become high strung over something specific) and so complaining and "elitism" will run rampant.

And as a trend are male, and of a certain age, where proving themselves intellectually serves to overcompensate for areas lacking elsewhere...

But when in down Cryonicleech, just turn back to the one thing you can rely on when it comes to this place:

I'm right.
They're wrong.

Lol....that just made my night

Drama is every where especially when it comes down to a niche market that has an online community such as wargaming.

Maybe it does, I just took it from a comment thread on BoLS.

And, no, I'm not Jennifer Aniston. Not even the same gender. Sorry.

Is there some sort of connection between JA and Kaptain Kremlin?

I've thought about giving up the hobby because of it. I just want to play the game, I'm tired of people bitching about "cheese", gak being "broken", people being "powergamers", etc.

ah. understood. But, hey, if you compete in the special Olympics, then you are a very good special athlete. I'm going to leave the definition of "special" up to you.

P.S. The Special Olympics are actually sometimes more fun to watch than the regular ones, because the athletes aren't huge jerks.

and just ignore the drama. It ain't worth it. That blog post up from MVBrandt was good.

It's human nature, sure, but sometimes, I read these threads and it sounds like a bunch of squabbling over something useless.

Stuff like "Tourney-Hardcore WAAC players ruin the game!", "Warmachine players are elitist gakkers" and "Fantasy is chess, 40k is checkers" is just backwards. Hell, disagree all you want, It's your right to complain about GW, 40k, PP, etc. But seriously, a LOT of this seems out of hand. Things like "Oh, my Termie Libby can SA" and etc. Now, RAW, you're right, and I'm not going to argue RAI, but seriously, good luck getting people to believe you. Some of the stuff here is such minuscule and pointless gak it's just embarrassing. In a way, wargamers are starting to look like the most backwards hobbyists, squabbling and raging against each other, the companies that create/sustain the hobby, and different subgroups.

Now I'm not asking for some kind of crazy perfection, but Christ, use some common sense! It's a hobby, not a lifestyle, you don't win points for being the internet tough-guy, you don't win points for being some kind of righteous anti-tourney player, you either have fun with what you do in your spare time, or don't.

Some people play to win, some people play for fun. Me? I play to kill toy soldiers.

It's a vocal minority rather than all its fans.

The internet just cranks the drama amplifier up to 11.

Honestly, I never remembered any of the "drama" that surrounds our hobbies in the past until money and prizes were involved. Before gaming became a form of income, people played for pride and fun. Nowadays , people are complaining that the publishers don't update quickly or often enough, arguing over whether or not their armies are "tier 1", or observing the depths to which people will cheat in order to win.

In our FLGS, we tend to play "Metallica format" games... that is, Kill 'Em All. We have fun and we learn how to play our respective armies and opponents. Very rarely do players criticize the others for playing a certain army or unit or model. It wasn't like that in our old store, where D&D minis ruled and people complaining about the prices, but still purchased, then derided others for playing "that" model/warband...

I think the focus on tournaments and making money/prize-winning, etc. has caused most of the drama in the gaming community. Can't everyone just have fun and stop being jerks?

I see a lot of drama on this website, but have never encountered any drama regarding warhammer in real life - all right, I know one guy who gets super pissy when he's losing (he normally is) and I used to fistfight with my brother over games - because I tend to play against mates, not against general population in a public store, or in tournaments.

I personally am tired of all the crying in our hobby.
Because of that i mostly stick to the hobby aspects of painting and modelling/converting when i read forums.

EDIT: How to win these endless discussions: http://www.somethingawful.com/d/news/how-win-any.php (i bet its old, but i think its fun to read)

Same here. It can bring it's own problems though even there, but nowhere near what goes on elsewhere.

I try to avoid the drama at all costs. I personally am not that good at either fantasy or 40k but i work to improve myself. When there is a issue that arises were a WAAC player is being a *insert bad word here* I simply explain to them that I play the game for fun, and if they REALLY need to beat me I am more than happy to just stop playing the game with them so they can win. The drama usually ends there.

Sadly i think GW has created this environment where whether we admit or not that we really do need the next big thing otherwise our armies a re useless.
We are at the stage where we are not content with what we have, instead look to the future for the winning trick to appear.I lost the urge to buy any new GW stuff new, instead opting for 2nd hand.
I actually felt like i was doing something wrong! However,i no longer feel part of this insane arms race.
We care about the hobby, even if GW don't listen to us;that is why opinions are so divided.

Could be worse, we could not care at all.

Maybe if more people had been arguing about Legend of the 5 Rings or Warzone those games would still be around.

Yes, hence my saying... (see sig).

Also worth noting, people are much more dramatic online than in real life (usually).

Drama is VERY easy to avoid if you don't want to be involved. Just don't respond, or respond calmly and succinctly, only saying your piece once, and leaving it at that.

A dose of humility helps too.

If people played and hobbied as much as they post on forums then there would be less drama, that said most of the internet is monday morning quarterbacking.

Dont let it get in the way of your FUN.
