Why does JJ insist that we write a hand written letter to him instead of an email?

Gathering the Informations.

Separates the wheat from the chaff.

If you truly are invested enough to want something published, you'll write/type a letter, get a stamp, and put it in your mailbox.

If you just want to be a smartaleck git and make a smarmy comment in the hopes it gets published...you probably won't write/type a letter and pay to get a stamp, or even get off your lazy butt to walk it to your mailbox.

Except that not all emails are trash. =D I could just as easily write an email with the same amount of quality that a letter would have. I write letters too, despite having a phone and email. lol

The point was that it's easier to write an email, though. So you get a lot more dross to wade through.

The person who is willing to take the time to write something intelligent is more likely to be willing to take the time to actually post it. The guy who is just writing something nasty or pointless on the spur of the moment is less likely to be bothered if he can't just hit the 'send' button afterwards.

This isn't an attitude that's unique to Games Workshop. A lot of companies out there either don't accept feedback by email, or don't pay anywhere near as much attention to it as they would to an actual letter.

Probably work

I think it's the same reason why politicians hold emails with such little regard. Part of it's because there is a philosophy that it's easier to fake 1000s of people having similar opinions online than in written (especially hand written) text. It's been said that one written letter is worth 10000 opinions online. The other part of it is the fact that, like politicians, he probably doesn't care.

You'd be amazed I think. Once you get up the chain to where the real work happens. Modelling, writing, and developing. I can see there being some good wage floating round. I was talking to one of the artists who does work for GW (and some other companies) and we were talking about his massive house in the Lake District. Not exactly on a low wage then . . . =p

That's actually a depressing thought. That means Robin Cruddace and Matt Ward are handsomely compensated for writing those terrible abortions of armylists...

Lets be honest he is probably told what to write every month by the design studio to connect it to the latest release so why in the world would he want the opinion of the consumer? That might be called a sound marketing strategy which is something GW lack.

All I can say is this about him, behind Gary Gygax,Jervis Johnson is one of the best in the bussiness. currently living the best, heck he used to make 1st ed. d.n.d modules .With out him GW never would have surived. Hand written letters are more personal and serious of matters. So no more Jervis bashing he can not help that h is boss is a jerk.

Try jervis@games-workshop.co.uk bound to end up on their servers somewhere.

...on second thoughts the web server at @games-workshop.co.uk probably filters anything with 'jervis', 'johnson', 'jj' etc. in the recipient field straight into the spam folder.

I have no problem with writing him a letter. I have nice paper and pens and I like to write. Sometimes, I just wish I could send a quick thought to him though.

This.

Writing a physical letter has a cooling off effect on nerd-rage. Very few nerds can maintain their rage long enough to get through a semi-literate and coherent letter without devolving into internet memehood and lolspeak.

It also means that any letter that do pass this filter are either short and bile filled, or long, well writen and the bile is cleverly hidden.

My only real question to jervis would be..

Why did you let Gary morley live? After sculpting those metal possessed he should have been "recycled" along with the models
