Subject: Some Dogs of War [Updated-19/10/2010]

Lord Commander in a Plush Chair

I've just finished up a couple of Dogs of War, Long Drongs pirates and Marco Colombo. These have been sitting around unpainted for quite a long while, but I found that GW had given me two standard bearers with the pirate box. I have thought about putting something padded on the end of the other one to make it look like he could have come from manning a cannon.
I'm still experimenting with photographing figures at the moment. I did these on a green background to make it easier to edit the background later but Marco appears to have a cold green hue about him and the green is reflected in the swords of the dwarves and other areas.
Anyway I've got a selection of stuff to go with them which I'll put up in time. Next up I've decided to do the giants of Albion.
By the way, if someone has a pair of the plastic spoked wheels that go with the galloper gun that would be great as a couple of mine were miscast.

Update to add my Giants of Albion! These have taken me a couple of hours every night this week. They seemed to need a fair bit of filling and sculpting to fill gaps inconveniently placed across the hair and the like. Painting the skin was a real challenge and looked awful to begin with. With something this large I went for fairly subtle tonal differences in the skin which don't appear to have come up so well with the camera but I though anything more harsh would look unnatural. The clothing was more straight forward and the skin looked a lot better as the models took shape. Overall I'm happy I've finally finished these as I found them a daunting project for a long time which put me off.
The clothed giant was my favourite, the colours of his patchwork trousers were a joy to paint. I love the pose of the other about to drop a menhir on someone but the one with the tree really grew on me as I painted it.

The were part of the Dogs of War range released at the end of 5th edition. They were available on the GW site for some years but now they only appear on eBay. They haven't gained huge collectors value though so can still be picked up for a moderate price. I had these two in a GW sale some years ago for £14 (which was half price back then).

Cheers to Killkrazy for moving my thread into blogs.
I've just started Pirazzos Lost Legion. They are a nice set of figures but I'm repainting mine. Originally I did them with bottle green clothing and bronze armour as on the box and which I associated with Spanish soldiers. It was horrible and dark, I figured that people exploring Lustria would have light clothes and they'll have spanish steel armour instead of the dark bronze. Hopefully this will look more appealing.
The Lost Legion are pretty hopeless game wise though. I bought them because they look cool but I wouldn't recommend them to anyone. Before the game they can choose to use either crossbows or pikes, which possibly has an advantage in a tournament. But the rest of the time? Nah. If you want a pike regiment then get a pike regiment that is better in hand to hand like the Alcatani Fellowship or Rico's Republican Guard, and if you want crossbows then get a regiment like the Marksmen of Miragliano who have higher BS. The Lost Legion are a master of neither and you have to pay points wise for that luxury.
Anyway, that aside I have Vesperos Vendetta and a pair of Galloper Guns to work on then I've done all I have. I'm looking at getting either another pike regiment, one of the crossbow regiments like the Besiegers or perhaps Beorg's Bearmen from eBay. All depends on what I can get for a reasonable price. Other regiments like the Birdmen or Asarnil the Dragonlord are very attractive but somewhat hard to come by.
I will put out feelers again for a pair of plastic spoked wheels, anyone got a couple spare?

I only have 5th edition rules. Under those the giants are standard giants and the Druid is a level 1 magic user. You can't get them from GW but they appear regularly on eBay.
Marco Columbo is much more interesting, he has a telescope that allows him to look at every enemy unit at the start of the game an on a 4+ they must reveal hidden characters like golbin fanatics of skaven assassins, his magic items are a Lustrian gem that allows one rerolled armour throw per turn, a gourd of magic wine that adds D6 to his strength for a turn, he also has an ancient scroll that once per turn gives himself a 2+ save against magic.
And you can see all these items on the figure himself which often isn't the case even for special characters' magic items. I really like that touch.

Another update, things progressing well. The Vendetta is almost finished apart from the bases. The wife popped into the LGS in town and they'd run out of Graveyard Earth, but more will appear next week so I have to wait. Otherwise they are pretty much finished. This is the most productive I'm been in a long time and the lull in the DoW figures prompted me to dip back into 40K and produce this...
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/320837.page
Anyway, I'm off until next week so thought I'd drop in an update and show the Vendetta as they currently are.
I photograph all my figures against a coloured background like this, usually green or blue paper which makes it easy for the wand tool that draws a automatic mask around the image to isolate the figure - just in case anyone had ever wondered how I produce my finished pictures.
Also I got my Besiegers through the post but just got 13. Now I checked the auction and there were only 13 in the photo, but the description said 14 so I don't know what to do exactly. Because I got them for a good price and don't want to kick up a stink for nothing. But 13 is about the most awkward number I could have, what shape should that unit form?
And in other news, my dad is going to let me have his Alcatani fellowship, all 24 of them, which is a fair number. The Dogs of War just gre and I fell like I'm only halfway through. I'm also collecting bits to make a general, I have Marco, but the essence of DoW is individuality. I want a man on horseback to look like he's been around the whole world. I have a helmet from a Greek Spartan, and a shield from a lizardman, so haven't decided what else...I'm open to suggestions.

I buy and sell online a lot and if you let the seller know that they've missed one then I'm sure they will be only too happy to post it. On the other hand if its a typo and they really only have 13 then I'm not sure what the procedure is.

You must be joking, if I even saw one I'd snap it up. Sadly they sell for rather a lot on eBay, I'm keeping my eyes open if I go to shows.
Feels weird calling these 'oldies', they are all brand new to me as I bought them. I checked the other day and they are all at least 10 years old, they came out before 40K 3rd edition (I recall the White Dwarfs) so I think they are 1998. Time flies, but I think my painting has improved to do them justice now. Thanks for the comments.

Here's the completed build for my DoW general. He's pretty much what I was aiming for on horseback with an assortment of items on the back and some bits to make a colourful figure for the character. He's made up of the legs of an old metal empire pistolier, a militia plastic body and head, and the metal arms from the older empire multipart box, I did the hair from milliput, a challenge with my scuplting skills and the rest for the hores was sourced from the bits box. The version on foot was an afterthought where I found bits and pieces to make a similar model on foot but this time arming him with the helmet and shield from the back of his horse.

Argh, there's been a Chaos insurgency this week! I took a break from the next stage of the Dogs (big units and a lot of work next) to do some Chaos. I dug these out from my parent's places when I visited last week, I picked them up at a wargames for very cheap some years ago. Bit of an odd mix, a few chaos marine helmets in this lot from their previous owner but they don't draw attention. Anyway, I didn't bother with striping off the old paint, just sprayed over in black and used mithril silver on the edging, a few bits of bone, skin and the bases, about three nights work after the undercoating last week.

Here's a sizeable update with more fantasy stuff. I had to wait a while to get the paint to finish bases, and I didn't feel like proceeding with the Dogs leaving the others unfinished. Work is pretty hard going at the moment so it's nice to relax with a bit of this and that at the end of the day.
Anyway, here are the last few DoW finished, first the Vendetta...
And the General...
He is Lucius Cortez, a Tilean who left Miragliano as a boy to make his riches has travelled a large part of the Old World since. He has the looks but only half the manners of a nobleman, he sometimes claims to be the son of an assassinated prince having to make his own way in the world with only half an education. In youthful haste he one of few to take a shortcut across the zombie swamps and over the mountains into Bretonnia where he charmed more than a couple princesses. His desire to keep on the move was a wise one therefore, and he later travelled through the Empire and fought the vile rat-men in Mordenheim for several weeks accumulating some wealth. He has since made the mistake of accepting a room in Sylvania and barely escaping with his life, has seen the foundries of the Chaos Dwarves, has survived the Leviathan while crossing the Sea of Claws and has looted temples near the Lizardman city of Zlatlan. With his experience he is a valued mercenary general, and with his riches he can form an army for exploration of his own, his desire is explore the New World. Automatically Appended Next Post:
As an aside to the DoW I dug out some skeletons. They were mostly painted some time back and I apologise for the picture quality, but there's not a lot to painting a skeleton anyway. To finish them off I cleaned up the bases and painted them before doing the same as the Chaos Warriors; black gravel with tufts of grass.
It's a fairly sizeable force and in detail...
Nagash!
Woot! I didn't paint this, I bought it off eBay and quite liked the finish so kept it. I just re-based it.
A vampire...
20-Man skeleton unit with spears
30-Man with hand weapons
Skeletal horseman leader, a bit of this and that out the bits box and a repositioned horse.
Couple of chariots, I love these old chariots...you just don't see enough of them for sale 2nd hand these days.
Anyway that totals...
Nagash
Vampire on horse
9 horsemen
20 spears
30 hand weapons
2 chariots.
