The videogames forum is busy shouting about the console wars and patting themselves on the back for both not buying halo and yet buying the new call of duty. Civ 5 is a seminal event in human history, it belongs on all pages.
I will be getting it.

I just bought it yesterday, pre-loaded today. Can't wait!
Been playing Civ IV in lieu of homework all day just to get ready for it. Somehow won a diplomatic victory when we were voting for the secretary-general of the U.N. at one point - it was about the third or fourth election, and I wound up getting votes from all but one person (with another abstaining). The next turn, I see "Elizabeth has won a diplomatic victory!"
I hope Civ 5 has the ridiculous anachronisms that the others have had. Gotta love starting the future era in the 1800s

Civ is great. Although the high time was Civ 2.
I really like the Planetfall (Alpha Centauri) mod for Civ 4, and Colonisation is and was a great game too.
No match for Paradox games (Europa Universalis, Hearts of Iron, Victoria, Rome, Cursader Kings).

Really? I had no trouble with 1, 2 or 3, but I never was able to beat 4 at the highest level. Probably doesn't help that I'm an aggressive player by nature and it seems like they rein that style of play in more with every version. Or that I really don't play much anymore. I want to get 5, but realistically I don't know when I'm going to play. Marriage and now 2 kids have put an end to the all-night gaming sessions, LOL.

Civilization 4 has kept me busy off and on for years. I never would have guessed that turn based computer gaming was the perfect gaming for having an infant. Even at 6 months old, he turns the game into a very cerebral exercise, since I usually have between 15 and 45 minutes between turns. Its the modern equivalent of playing chess by mail!

Not sure if 5 is playable offline. If not, I don't need a changed CIV just for sake of changes.
Since Civ III nothing got better. 1 was nice, 2 had a interesting spin, 3 was great, 4 is a bit too peaceful and small/slow.
I want my military victory back! Conquer them all FTW.

The two expansions heavily militarized civ 4, the balance was a bit better with them. Civ 5 will be playable offline like all single player games on steam.

I Always grab those expansions for cheap ( when they release 'complete' packs at 10€ ). Sadly Civ IV still lacks offensive power then.
Even with 2 human players vs PC its the hardest way to win=> to aim for military victory.
Should wait for Civ5 to get patched/expansions and consider the game then....

Yeah, even with the expansions my Civ 4 games at the high levels usually followed the same pattern. The aggressive approach would go along fine until sometime in the later part of the game where I'd hit a smaller but fantastically (and unreasonably) advanced civ that I just wouldn't be able to handle. And then I'm faced with devoting everything I have into an extremely protracted grind that doesn't favor me, or trying to completely change my approach and play technology catchup (which tended to be even more futile given how my civ was structured and constituted).
Always seemed to me like the game favored a push-out-early-then-play-nice approach, and that kinda bores me given the length of a Civ game. I'll probably buy 5 just because I'm a complete Civ lemming, but I might wait for some reviews before pulling the trigger.

They are changing Civ 5's military victory, apparently - you need only capture each country's capitol to wipe them out, not every city (since in Civ IV, if you capture a capitol a random city becomes the new one).
Personally, I usually go for Space Race or Cultural victory - Cultural can be hilarious at times, just watching how much terrain you can take over (and cities, if you're patient). And of course, it's always funny to colonize Alpha Centauri in like 1950.

Strange, it's the most time consuming certainly, but I would challange you to beat 1 opponant via space, the apostolic palace, the UN, score, or culture before I can beat them militarily (in turns). Civ 5 with expansions is the most military focused of all the civ games, it's actually a veteran complaint thats fairly common among those in the know. I guess it could be harder if you didn't know timing attacks with certain techs, but I can beat 2~ computers in the first 40 turns with a montezuma > slavery > bronze working > jaguar rush as long as after buildings mines my worker starts building a highway of malevolence into competing territory.

Love the Civ series, but given that 4 only barely runs on my computers, I'll probably have to wait a while before picking it up :(
Like Civ 4 the most of out of all of them, with Civ 2 being second. The real champ imho was Civ 4 with the Rise of Mankind mod - talk about hours of fun. I enjoyed 3 as well, but the massive corruption hit you took for a big empire really kind of stifled my style of play. Manifest Destiny is the only way to play!
It's amazing how Civilization can absorb an entire weekend...kind of like Fallout.

I think you meant Civ4+expansions?
Never play against 1 opponent, like the big maps / planetwide conquest so 7-8 exterminated AI's have to litter the floor.
Played almost every possible faction / victory of all 4 Civs.
A rush against 2 AI's is possible, if you disable barbarians. Put them to super-agressive and we see if you survive 40 turns whilst rushing
2 civs...
Specialists like jaguars are fine, until its a ocean heavy map of islands.
Could also draw a map with the editor ( without the neccessary ressources for military upgrades/units ) and you have 0 chance to win the challenge. Terrain does matter.

Civ 4 barely runs on your computer??? Your computer must be at least a decade old. I think it's time to upgrade and then get civ 5. You'll be much happier.
I really loved how civ 4 was so easy to mod. Apparently they are keeping that in civ 5 which will be great. the hardest part about a military victory in Civ 4 was not winning by another method first. If you were industrious you could scam all the really good wonders and then have insane culture well before you could wipe out the rest of the civ's. I would quite often turn off all the victory conditions except military and then wipe everyone else out. The biggest problem with that is it gets kinda boring when you have insane tanks spam rolling across the world razing everything in it's path.

Trust me, the PC Civs are much, much better than Revolution. Rev is a very watered-down version of Civ - resources are automatic (and function differently), everything except for production moves faster (I've seen my culture capture 3 different cities in one turn o_O) and the game is really easy compared to the big versions. The one thing I did like about Rev, though, was that they had a wealth-based victory condition - accrue 20,000 gold pieces and build the World Bank. Tis the only thing I wish I had in Civ 4, since I usually wind up at full production with +50-100 gold a turn midway through the game.
