I want to make a chaos dreadnought, but I'm not sure which set to use. This dreadnought would end up being Word Bearers, so I was thinking the venerable kit? The ironclad doesn't have a plasma cannon...so..I can't really use that one. The standard dread seems okay, but I was wondering what you guys thought?
Note that a forgeworld Dreadnought is not a possiblilty

Forgeworld dred's are very competitive for price lately. With the price increase of GW's kits and the low euro, you might want to take a second look.
That aside, I very much like the venerable dread. The iconography would need to be replaced/ruined to make it chaosy. Spikes are easy to attach to any plastic chassis. Here's a AoBR dread that my buddy converted.
While I'm not trying to downplay my friend's conversion skills - he only needed a few items to make the dread look stellar ( imo). So whatever dread is in your price range and has the weapons you want, go for it.

You've got me a -little- torn, I want to say I agree on the Venerable, but I do still rather like the Existing Chaos Dred in metal, esp since it has most of the correct options..

<Rarity> I am not whining, I am complaining! Do you want to hear whining?
Thiiis is whiiiiining! Oooo, this mini is too expeennsive! I'm' going brrookee! Can't you make it cheaper? Oh, it's resin and not metal anymore! Why didn't you take it off the sprue first? That's gonna leave a pour spout, and the FLGS is so far away, WHY DO I HAVE TO SUPPORT IIIIIIIT?! </Rairty> |

The Venerable Dreadnought is the easiest plastic Dreadnought to convert. The molded-on Imperial iconography is easy to scrape off, a Chaos Space Marine helmet is easily modified as the 'head' sensor pod, and it comes with a Plasma Cannon. Use some Ork shootas to extend the exhaust pipes, and add Chaos Iconography from other kits and you're good. Plus it's the least expensive Dreadnought kit, for reasons I'm not entirely clear on.

Any dread imo, so long as you have spiky bits and green stuff. Id pick on up that comes with two ccw because its dumb to put guns on a chaos dread imo.

Here's an inspirational thread
Proof that Chaos Dreadnoughts can't be reduced to "spiky bitz and green stuff":
Which doesn't mean spikes don't work if used in a tasteful fashion, with some excellent close combat accessories:

While I'll agree that Forgeworld has some good stuff, and though GW pricing is increasing and FW is pretty much staying the same, I'll still not call the prices "competitive". I just checked out the prices along with current exchange rates for the GBP vs USD. We're talking 62.40 before shipping, which usually is a nice bundle. I had a FW Slaanesh dread like the above and it was BEAUTIFUL. Personally if you want my opinion, if you have the cash, go FW. If you aren't skilled with conversion, go with the standard Chaos dreads as they still look good. If you are skilled with conversion, I'd go with the Ven Dread kit because it is the old Pre-Heresy style kit.

Metal GW Chaos Dread- $57.75- Oldest Dread they make and most expensive.
Plastic GW Dreads- $43.00- $44.50- New kits and lots of left over bits, but not all the options for Chaos.
Resin FW Dreads- $40 for the Dread + $21 for 2 arms of choice- While it's the most expensive option, it's also the most detailed and you can outfit it exactly as you like.

And i'd say ironclad, simply for the duel CC weps. (get rid of the 4 tipped vibro toy and use the chainfist)
If you want basic but well made, then grab an iron clad and chaos vehicle upgrade sprue.
Throw the gargoyle heads on the exhausts.
Add in parts where needed.
However, if your taking a shooty dread then cant beat the ven.
simply due to the options in the box.
You will however have to chaos-up the CCW a fair bit though

 aha.
Anyway, I really think the venerable is the best way to go, the more I look at the sprues. The chaos marine head is a great idea....but what if used...a chaos terminator head??!!!?? I've got like three left over, that's probably what I'll do.
And also, The ironclad's DCCWs are really bad looking for a chaos conversion, IMO. I don't want a CC dread anyway. That's what I have defilers for!

I'd say the Ironclad - it's already geared up for two close combat weapons anyway, and it's a bit less common to see than the regular dreadnought.

Id go with the venerable, the inscriptions all over it are very word bearer-y. Leave them on, get a suitably chaos sarcophagus.

Since you are going to need to cover and change most of the imperial iconography anyways I can't see spending the money on a venerable dreadnought.... Personally I would ebay a black reach dread for $10 and while your there get a chaos vehicle upgrade kit or two. Presto, under $20 for a custom dread.

One thing about the venerable that I really like, is that I'll have tons of bits left over, and if I really want to, I can buy a FW dread later and use the pieces on it.
So yeah, decision made. Close thread please

I agree, though I think it'd be cool to just use a standard CSM head. The Ven Dread heads are compatible with standard Space Marine bodies, as I've used them for my honor guard, and they look great! I'm sure you can use a CSM head just as easily on the Ven Dread.
Also, Gamble, you're quite right and have an excellent point. I didn't realize that the old CSM dread was so expensive these days. For that price it'd be worth a few extra bucks for the Forgeworld one. Good find, and good point.
