It's arguable that the Kasrkin hot shot lasguns look quite similar to regular lasguns, except rather than an ammo battery they have tubes going to their backpack.
I have two questions here.
If I were to model some guardsmen with respirators, grenades, pouches etc, as well the tubing as a replacement for the lasgun magazine, would they be acceptable storm trooper stand-ins? Perhaps I could also give them vox caster packs (minus the antennae + speaker)
And secondly, how would I go about replicating the gun cables? My first thought, I suppose was green-stuff noodles, but I've never done that sort of thing before, and it's like to be inconsistent or messy.

Why not just use the Kaskrin? They're fine models.
I mean, it's not like you'd want to use stormtroopers in the first place, short of the nice models. Take that away, and you've got nothing.

Indeed, you have a point.
I suppose I was just looking forward to converting something, but it would have been pointless to count them as vets, because I'd also be using alot of vets, so they'd be amongst boring old regular guardsmen models.

i don't see why not as long as you do the cables to the backpack. the original hotshot lasgun models were just regular guardsmen with cable-backpack-lasguns. that would meet the specs of WYSIWIG for the weapons. as long as you beef up the armor a bit with knee and elbow pads to show they're 4+, i dont see how anyone would have a problem with it.

If you're not keen on cables then another alternative is to alter the weapons in some other way to make them look chunkier and more special issue. I cheated on my Stormies by buying after-market weapons, but there is nothing stopping you adding box mags or heavier barrels to regular lasguns.

You can also chop together a couple of lasguns to make one big, beefy lasgun, like I did.
Honestly, so long as they looked vaguely better armored with a gun that looked in any way cooler than a regular lasgun, you're going to be fine.

The original inspiration was the Le Mat. I mean, it's not like stormies are ever going to get to shoot more than once anyways...

cadian vox caster set chopped way down.
The thing is, this was one of my earliest GS conversions, and is thus pretty easy. You don't need all that many skills in order to be able to convert up reasonable looking stormies. Just take a regular cadian that you're willing to butcher for the cause and try some stuff out.

Dude, take Vets with the Greniders upgrade. They now have EXACTLY the same stats, and are cheaper, and more upgradable. Sure, they dont have the Hot Shot lasgun, but thats an AP3.

Indeed Ailaros, your conversion looks exceptional. And it's so simple! I might have a go at it - if not for storm troopers, just for some badass looking troopers..
And Crash, I'd be happy to see your models. Any good conversions are worth seeing, it can give you a better idea of what options are available to you, I guess.

If you are just looking for low cost (and you don't care about breaking away from GW) those new Greatcoat Troopers from WGF (wargames factory) are a great deal. I got a sampler with my order of zombies, and they're pretty detailed for the price (its like 17 bucks for a set of 18)

I really, really dig these guys. Is that just green stuff used for most of the armour and what not and then converting the lasgun?

Yeah, and it was one of my earliest GS projects (as evidenced by the relatively shoddy GS work), so it really wasn't that difficult to do. Pretty much it's GSed leg armor and arm armor and side-helmet-lens-thing, and bedroll. The rest is all chopped plastic, basically.

triple linked. It has a laser sight on it.
I think the point is just to make it "beefier" in some manner. More bits, piano cabling, Pig iron or FW enclosed heads and you're god to go with something truly yours. Automatically Appended Next Post: Where are those packs from FYI?

he answers the pack question earlier in the thread.
i agree about the lasguns. they're unique and obviously different from lasguns and beefier/look more powerful. if someone mistakes that model for a regular cadian with a solarpower pew-pew gun in an army with both, he/she needs to get stronger prescription eyeware.

The rifles are Hasslefree CAD guns and the backpacks are from Pig Iron. they do a mixed pack and pouch sprue that is pretty neat. I would have added more pouches if I could have made them fit reasonably
@Warboss Narzok - Heh, no commissions. I barely have time to footle on my own army. I'm purely in this for the inspiration

I though of using space marine scouts and swapping the guns and heads with pig iron stuff at one point.... but it wasn't worth the effort as I wouldn't field them..... That and I already own way too many stormies haha.
