Hey, folks.

So I'm looking at getting a squadron of Skorchas for my Ork army, but the problem is, 1) I think the Wartrakk model looks kind of silly compared to the Warbuggy model, and 2) I really don't relish working with the metal Skorcha components.

So I turn to you, Dakka, for suggestions.

What I'd like to do is something like the following:

Buy three Warbuggies
Find some good caterpillar treads (either from an Ork kit or another GW kit)
Replace the Warbuggies' wheels with the converted Trakks
Replace the twin-linked Big Shoota with a properly Orky flamer, perhaps from the Burna kit (which I have plenty of bits from, having recently assembled 15 Lootas)

So, what I need suggestions for are the following:
1) What kit would make a decent Trakk for the warbuggy, to replace the normal wheels? A caterpillar tread that sloped upwards towards the back might be best, but the Orks don't seem to have one like that. The only two I know of are the Battlewagon kit, which probably wouldn't fit, and the Wartrakk tread, which is a bit too flat, I think.
2) How would you all recommend doing the Skorcha bit? Would a Burna from the Burna/Loota kit work? Or is there a better way to do it? (the other thing I thought of was a HF from a Land Speeder kit, a Flamestorm cannon from a LRR kit, or a whatever-the-flamer-thing-is-called from the Hellhound kit). Also, it'd be really super nice if the bits were available from the WarStore.

Anyway, any help you all can render is much appreciated!

Do a google search for Robogear. i think they have the best potential for trakks and conversions.

Hmmm - don't have my bitz with me at work (why not?!?) - but the Deff Dread or Killa Kan Skorchas would probably work fine (And who uses Skorchas on Killa Kans anyway?)

I'd almost have my own go at making Trakks with plasticard - sliced tubing for the wheels, thin sheet for the track, overlaid with thicker plates... but I'm weird that way...

I just did, and you're right! I honestly can't tell if these are 28mm scale or not, but if they are, this right here:

has exactly the kind of tread I'm looking for. This would make a spectacular conversion, so long as the scale is right.

Edit: And TheWarStore has it for eight bucks!

Deff Dread and Kan skorchas, why didn't I think of that? That'd probably work very nicely. Some minor hack-and-slash conversion work and they could probably fit right on that mount meant for the big shootas.

As for the treads, I really want to avoid plasticard. My last foray into plasticard really turned out looking pretty bad, so.

Understandable. Though, just like my (lacking) GS skills - practice makes progress! I'm sure you'll find something suitable - just remember to share it with the rest of us!

I've browsed TheWarStore for suitable flamers, and the Deff Dread skorcha seems right on the mark. It doesn't have an arm attached to it like the Killa Kan skorcha, and it's got a nice little slot underneath the - here, why don't I show you.

I'm thinking, chop off the rear fuel tank (the one that looks like an undersized oil drum) and mount it on the bottom of the rectangular bit just in front of that. The trigger assembly for the Big Shootas will probably fit nicely on the now-flat backside of that piece. It may look a bit front-heavy, but I think I can make it work. Worst case scenario, chop off the barrel of the big shoota and replace it with that apparatus, so it looks a bit more balanced.

The BW traks would look killer on each side of the buggy imho and could easily be done depending on your modeling skills...

That's one of the first things I thought about, but unfortunately wouldn't work.

The BW tracks are tall and of consistent height. The Warbuggy's got smaller wheels in front and larger ones aft. So in order to conform to the buggy's chassis, the tracks have to slope upwards, which is why the Robogear tank I showed a picture of probably works nicely.

The scale is exactly perfect as i have some flyers that were made with the Robogear flyer. I have also seen other conversions with the trakks form these and they look perfect for what yuo want them for. I think for $8 it's worth trying.

$24 actually, since I'll be converting 3 buggies, but yeah. If you say it's the right scale, then it'd be perfect.

The old IG tracks and road wheels sprues are perfect for making your own track mechanisms, so long as you don't mind the 'looted IG' look.

Or forget tracks and use the new trukk/BW fat wheels?

Also consider something like a looted SM assaut bike with side car, or one of the many SM quad bike conversions, instead of the buggy.

I'd advise against Robogear. The models I bought looked fine, but they were made of rubbish dumpster plastic and had terrible flash, as well as little to no detail. Although apparently some people have had great success with theirs, opening their package to reveal beautiful resin components.

Not a bad suggestion, I'll have to look into that if the Varan idea goes south.

Er... you know the Warbuggy kit comes with wheels, right? If I wanted the thing to have wheels, I'd just use those.

That right there is *exactly* the look I'm looking for. Apparently the Varan treads fit flawlessly. That tears it, Robogear Varan treads it is.

Thanks for the links!

Yeah, but the warbuggy comes with the boring non-orky generic wheels, not even half as cool as the the new trukk/BW fat wheels.

Fair enough. But because it'll be a Skorcha, I want to represent the trakk somehow. So wheels are out.

Unfortunately, my wallet (and other ongoing projects) say "no."

And after having seen some Warbuggy models first-hand, I'm considering using the Robogear tracks idea and combining it with a Deffkopta-minus-da-kopta-gubbins, since the Warbuggy models are tiny.

We'll have to see!

I'll be sure to post updates once I get it started though. With pick-chures.
