I've been thinking, ever since I started reading the HH series i discovered i felt this more and more. Does anyone feel any pity for the traitor primarchs? this only works if you've read the series, but to me it seems like they didnt actually want any of this to happen. well, except for Angron. I dont think he gives a damn whos side he's on as long as he gets to chop off enough heads. Also (DONT ANYBODY TELL ME WHAT HAPPENS IN "THE FIRST HERETIC, I HAVENT READ IT YET!! ) I dont know about Lorgar i havent read his book.
some examples:

1) Horus: tricked by Erebus into believing he was doing tbis for the good of humanity

2) Fulgrim: possessed by a deamon, thats not really even him doing all this

3) Magnus: tried to help the emperor but then got his kicked by wolf-boy by doing so. i dont really blame him either

4)Alpharius and Omegon: belived by joining horus they could destroy chaos

see what i mean?

I do feel sorry for the ones I've read about currently, especially Fulgrim. Even Angron's short story got an "aww" out of me.

There's a short story about him in Tales of Heresy. It's pretty good.
At least, I think it's Tales of Heresy...

did he need any persuading to turn to chaos? I had thought that as bloodthirsty as he was, he would automatically turn to khorne

Not really. It's shown as him experiencing a massive loss as an outpouring of rage, especially at the Emperor, so he was already bitter with him, from what I can gather.

Possibly..
Spoiler:
Angron was the only Primarch who wasn't given a choice to follow the Emperor, or I should say refused to follow the Emperor. He choose to stay and fight, and possibly die, with the other slave/gladiators. The Emperor teleported him out at the last minute.

Of course they do. Ever since there's been Heresy fiction (dating way back), it's been clear that the colossal Heresy that happened didn't have to.

The Emperor mostly screwed things up with his kids that forced half of the half that turned coat to have almost no other choice. Only Angron and Night Haunter were lost causes before Emps made a mess of things.

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

No, that's what the massive loss was. He lost the chance to fight beside the people he'd spent years trying to free.

Hmm, I wasn't aware of this Angron background. I guess only Night Haunter was a bad guy then.

Night Haunter wasn't a bad guy either, I don't think. He was basically Batman of Nostramo. When the Emperor found Night Haunter and he left Nostramo, all the bad guys he kept at bay took the place over again. When the Night Lords needed recruits, thats the kind of people they had to choose from. Night Haunter's story is one of bad circumstance, not necessarily evil. Once he realized his legion became the very thing he was fighting against, he basicily let himself get killed.

Aside from fulgrim (who I pity because getting having to watch while a daemon uses your body to destroy your family) chaos used the weaknesses in the primarch that were created by unlucky situations.

The primarchs who managed to succeed were immune to chaos influence but those who had hard lives and who failed at their goals got turned.

The worst I think are
Angron- The emperor made a major mistake here. Instead of sending down a legion of SM to help Angron, insuring his son's loyalty and becoming a hero to the survivors he turned angron against him. Even though Angron knew he was going to die, loosing the chance to kill the people who torutred him his whole life would have really messed him up.

The Night Haunter-The primarch did his best to improve his world then realised he had become what he spent his life hunting.

Alpharius and Omegon- Possibly the most good primarchs, they sacrificed their legion so that they may be able to destroy chaos.

Magnus- Broke the rules to save the good legions then gets attacked for it.

I feel sorry for Magnus.

he had good intentions, but wasn't fully aware of what he was playing with.

He played with fire, got burned, and then his big brother beat him up, and then he ran off into the EoT and has had a big hissy-fit for 10,000 years.

I wish they would have simply made a few of the Primarchs....evil rather than give them all a story revolving around "It is always with the best intentions that the worst work is done". I would have been perfectly content if Magnus would have simply turned because Chaos offered him more power.

Apart from the fact Abaddon isn't a primarch but is having Horus' hissy fit for him but is failing as is his talent.

I feel sorry for Lorgar, he spent 60 years spreading the Word of the God-Emperor and then gets bitch slapped by his father. The father then leaves and doesn't give Lorgar any guidance, big surprise he goes with Chaos. If the Emperor and the Primarchs were in Australia child services would have taken most of them away for neglect.
And then it ends up his father becomes the God-Emperor, and is worshipped by millions. whoops.

I agree with this pretty much, except for Mortarion. I can't see any redeeming features with him at all. If I've missed something, please set me straight!

Really? i didnt feel that mortarion was particularly evil. And the situation of his turning to chaos seemed to have the least free will of any of the Chaos primarchs.

I love the Horus Heresy series for what it is and I think it is very well thought out and written. If I had read only the series and not known anything about say Fulgrim or Magnus from other sources then I would've been more than happy. However, reading the likes of the Index Astartes articles and Slaves to Darkness etc, I've often felt a little bit, let down, by the portrayal of some of them.

Magnus seemed overly arrogant so you feel no sympathy for him when he tries to warn the Emperor.

Fulgrim falls pretty much due to a talking sword, not because of his corruption at the hand of his brother Horus.

The tragedy seems to be missing.

I think that it's difficult to meat out legendary stories that we have formulated our own ideas of what went down. We're also having someone else interpretation of what happened told to us. My point of view on this is that as all fluff is fluff I like to keep the likes of the Index Astartes articles and BL books separate from each other.
