I chose 40k orks because, at the time, all of my friends started SM and bought a bunch of AOBR sets. seeing a golden opportunity i launched into action and got a sh*t load of orks for almost nothing. And of course nothing cooler than drowning your opponent in the mass amounts of dice that you get for attacks.

Orks: approx 4000 pts
Uruk-hai force(700 pts)
about 700 points of Vampire Counts

Agreed, i went on ebay and bought tons and tons of Ork boys, i think AOBR was better then BFM because it has no many better models ( Except for the crashed Aquilla that was awesome)

how big is your ork army now?

Orks. They'd just come out with a new codex, and found their stupidity something I could appreciate.

"Why?"

I originally got into Fantasy with Dark Elves. Got them from a friend who didn't like the end of 5th ed Fantasy. Just so happened DE were released within a year and 6th ed came so I was pretty happy. Since then - I've burned through DE twice, Empire, Wood Elves, TK, WoC, and have settled for Bretonnians at the moment...

First 40k army I ran with was 3rd ed Plague Marines. It was fun then, just as I imagine it's even better now. And of course since then I've burned through CSM, Marines, All scouts, DE, IG, Necrons (for quite a while through 3rd), Deathwing (still have), Orks (i miss my orks),Witch Hunters, CSM again, and now just building my entire FOC of Dark Angels.

Currently just playing and trying to actually complete 2 armies, 1 for each game system.

Blood Angels... at the time everyone was playing Orks and Blood Angels, but I seemed to enjoy the Red Thirst rule and loved seeing my tanks ramming things...

Due to the Codex ' Angels of Death' I ended up switching to Dark Angels... then eventually crossed the line of damnation and ended up with Word Bearers...

Now I play Eldar cos they are pretty... and cheese

First 40k army was orks. A bunch of friends were talking about 40K on another forum I go to, and when I looked up the info of the Orks I found them hilarious.

WHFB was Lizardmen, mostly because it's an army of dinosaurs. And I love their fluff. But mostly the dinosaurs.

Ouze on GW: "I'd like to be like, hey baby, you're a freak but you just got too much crazy going on, and I don't hook up with bunny boilers. But then Necrons are going to come out, and I'm going to be like damn girl, and then next thing you know, it's angry sex time again.

It's complicated."

My first 40k army was Dark Eldar, but that was given to me,so I didn't really "pick them".

The first army I actively sought out and purchased were Orks, simply because I enjoyed the combination of barbarity and humor.

First aunit here was a Blood Angel tactical squad. I remember picking up the Angels of Death book and wanting to do Dark Angels but at the time Dark Angels Green was on back order and I was so excited to get started I went with the Blood Angels instead.

I had a bunch of Space Marines I'd gotten through gifts and flea markets. I did a Google image search for "Space Marines" and saw a bunch painted blue - Ultramarines as I'd later find out. Blue was my favorite color at the time, so Ultras were my first army.

Funny enough, I started off with an eye towards Chaos Marines. Even picked up a few here and there. One day, I googled 'Conversions' and it brought me to Goobaz Mekshop and I did a 180 towards Orks. So, I consider Orks my first (and main) army. I've dabbled since in others, just for the artistic challenge

For Fantasy, Warriors of Chaos. Yeah yeah, I know I know listened to too much Metal and read too many comic books. I'd liked the Chaos Warriors from Hordes of Chaos, but just didn't like the idea (or the models) for Demons. Once they split, I was all about it. I did have a bunch of Orcs & Goblins, but those Greenskins never hit me the same way the 40K Orks do....though I do love the Black Orcs.

"Orkses never lost a battle. If we win we win, if we die we die fighting so it don't count. If we runs for it we don't die neither, cos we can come back for annuver go, see!"

I dig how in a setting where giant, muscled fungus men ride Mad Max cars and use their own teeth as currency, the concept of little engineering dudes with beards was considered a step too far down the aisle of silliness.

My first Army was Tau. Even so i woulden't call it my first main army.
But about 7 years ago i had a friend who played Warhammer 40k he persuaded me to start playing aswell. And he talked me into buying the Tau as they were rather new and no one had them yet. Hmm so i must have been at the end of 2001 maby start of 2002? Anyway.
I bought the Tau Battleforce and i tryed it out. I quickly discovered that i neither had the skill nor patience to glue and paint it all together so i throwed it under my bed.
And now meany years later i was cleaning my room in my apartment and found the old damn box. I thought about throwing it out but instead i tryed to glue and paint some pieces together, i was hooked! And now I can't think nothing else then Warhammer!
But quickly after i got into Orks! Tau wasen't my thing but Orks sure is!
Got a small army so far but it will grow and soon it will grow in to a mighty WAAARGH!!.

About 9 years ago, I walked into my FLGS for some Friday Night Magic, and the shop owner told me about this "new game" he just got in. It was WHFB, his sales pitch was that all I needed was a single unit, and I'd be able to start playing! So I took a look at the catalog, and noticed how awesome the orcs looked, so I bought a box of the old metal black orcs...thinking that's *all* I was going to need...thousands of dollars later, and I still don't have *all* I need!

My first Fantasy army was Dark Elves and I picked it because my friend was collecting High Elves and it felt better to play as the Hating cousin lol.

Then when 40k came I decided to pick the futuristic version of them and got Dark Eldar.

My first army were Blood Angels. I bought the 2nd edition starter set, and gave the orcs to my friend and kept the marines. In all honesty, the only reason I even picked the Blood Angels, was cause they had the coolest looking cover art on their codex.

My first experience was when a friend of mine bought an empire box set in 5th edition of handgunners (plastic bodies, metal arms) but wanted to make them into swordsmen. I built one of the guys who had his sword raised with a straight arm, a breastplate and the clean shaven face with a beret. I painted him up as well, it was my first model, and I named him Sam. After I realized how much I loved making that first model, I asked my friend if I could keep it, told him I was going to buy the same box and give him back the pieces for that model. Thus I started Empire, "Sam" ended up getting a few upgrades later on, and without thinking I sold him just last spring with the rest of my Empire army after I got bored with it

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Tyranids as they were the only large creature type armies in 40k and I was always a huge Xenomorph/Dinosaur fan.

They were black with blue carapaces and black spots, red eyes and claws, and green lining around the joints. They looked like something out of Tron and I loved them to bits, yet have no idea where they are now :(

Lesse, first armies:

Back in, like, 1997 I picked up the WHFB starter box while at a Magic tournament down in LA. Started painting the Bretonians, since the knights were cool and I had an interesting idea for the colors. This was the first painting I'd ever done, and it wasn't pretty, and I never bought more units or actually got to play a game. I think the box eventually got dumped or given away, I don't even remember.

A while after that Clan War came out, and I was a Phoenix player in the card game so I had to start with that army. I have what was probably a complete 2000 point army, maybe 1/3 of it is painted, but at least I got a few games in.

I eventually found my way to 40k (3rd edition), started with Eldar. I loved the lines of the army (specifically the Falcon grav-tank). To date it's the only army I've actually stripped/repainted models in since as my painting has gotten better I've wanted to bring certain units up to "current" standard.

For Aetherverse I did sci-fi Roman (based around Void figs) and Egyptian (from some knockoff Stargate figs by Eureka) for demo games; they were since lost with a minis case.

In Warmachine I started with Khador, since I specifically wanted a low model-count army, and because their jacks are pretty much the best looking and most brutish (and I wanted to do a Soviet green color scheme).

A friend of mine introduced me to GW back in the mid 90's. My friend was already playing a half SM/half IG army, so I wanted something different. I usually like to play Orcs or dwarves in fantasy-type games, so I was deciding between Orks and Squats. Luckily he told me that it was better to pick an army that already has a Codex released, so I went with Orks. I later found out he was just hoping to pawn of some of the Orks from the starter set on me, but it ended working out pretty well for me.

1986 I was given a 1500 pt Chaos marine army by the local store owner to play a tourneyment he had started, battling through 20+ players and 6 weeks later Chaos wins and took the huge Chaos Castle trouphy home. I was very pleased and happy, and I never left Chaos after that.

Chaos rules you all drool! Blood for the Blood God!

2,000 pts Traitor Catchian Guard (1067th).
8,000 point Sam Hain Eldar.
2,000 pts Squat Biker Force.
