First 40K army was Blood Angels Space Marines, because they were the ones that came with the boxed set and I liked the models more than the attrocious Goff Orks that came with the set.
First Fantasy army was Lizardmen, again, because they came with the box and I liked the idea of lizardmen. I don't play either faction anymore, Lizardmen because the direction they took the models doesn't appeal to me (saurus are just too damned skinny) and blood angels because I prefered Orks. I did start a small crimson fist army recently, but it was mostly just to have something different to paint.

Black Templars.
I liked the idea of super-humans (Space Marines) and flipped through the "How to paint space marines book." I saw the Black Templars color scheme and really liked it. Then I found out that they had their own codex, so I chose them. I didn't want to play the regular marines that everyone else played.

I had first wanted to play Tyranids, I just loved the way they looked and their theme.
However, my friend was like SM go go go! And well, AOBR existed, but I wasn't all Ork mode really.
(I play DOW 2 and I played Orks and Tyranids, but that was it.)
Then, sure enough after playing Orks more on DOW 2 I grew fond of the greenskins.
I pitch in and buy the AOBR set and take the Orks, and one of the local IG players tells me.
"Hey I'm getting rid of my Orks so if you want any, I'll bring them by."
Later that week, I bought about 2.5k points of Orks for $85 bucks, huge deal.
Now I play Orks for 40k and I couldn't be happier, I love the Green Tide, I love the Waaagh!
Fantasy... Orcs & Goblins, got the brigade for $50 bucks. Local was getting rid of it.
Never played Fantasy in my life, traded it off for 40k.
However I want to play Skaven or Ogre Kingdoms for WHFB

For WHFB I received a nifty unit of Chaos Knights from my brothers as my introduction into the hobby.
Despite the fact that I've been meaning to do so for years, I still haven't gotten into 40k (other than the video games :-P). I plan on starting up 40k as soon as summer or my next fat scholarship check comes to me in January.

First unit: RTB001 Space Marines box. 30 marines for $30AUD. Because they were cool. I played WW2 at the time, but had been reading SF since the age of 6 (some 13 years prior). First army: Yriel's Eldritch Raiders. Eldar pirates, corsairs, reavers and general bloody nuisances. Because they weren't marines, but were nonetheless cool.

40k:
Necrons. I liked the idea of something more sinister than the imperium and fell in love with the fluff. As a bonus, they're easy to paint well, so I filled out my army fairly quickly. I actually bought the 3rd ed boxed set first, but needed more thought before committing to Dark Eldar.
FB:
Lizardmen. After buying lots of skaven and being daunted with the sheer numbers needed, I figured these could make a decent army without the quantity problem. I like the blue scheme and found it fairly easy to paint well.

The first unit I bought myself was a 10-pack of Empire Halberdiers (the old plastic ones that all look the same), because I'd received a grey wizard on a horse as a gift earlier and decided that an Empire army would be a good idea.
...
16 years later, I still don't have a real Empire army since I switched to High Elves shortly after.

40k: CSMs, about a year or two before their current mess of a codex was released. Never got deep into Warhammer before their current codex, so I didn't get to experience them as much as I wanted to before they were trainwrecked.
I'm a bit of a Khornate/Tzeentchian guy, with my 40k Chaos being more Khorne with only my DP as Tzeentch, but my WHFB is pure Tzeentch.
Dunno why I picked Chaos, I think they just appealed to me in general (I FEEL THA WARP OVAHTAKING ME! IT IS A GOOOOD PAIN!), Khorne especially, although I don't know why... *violent body spasm*
WHFB: Lizards. I'm a sucker for reptiles, they're just too cool. Although they don't have access to the coolest reptillians ever (Dragons ftw) I still couldn't pass up the chance to have an army of dinosaurs led by a floating magical bloated toad.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

I started out with the 2nd edition starter set so my first unit was 10 marines all in the same exact pose.
I remember my first eldar model was a wraithguard and then a dreadnought (before they called em Wraithlords).
My first tyranid was the original carnifex
After that, it's all a blur...

It was 1992 and some of the guys I played D&D with were getting into 40k. I decided to jump onto the bandwagon and headed up to my FLGS to have a look. I enjoyed the comedic nature of the orks. I think the ork book at that time was called "Ere We Go!" I bought some blister packs of Mad Boyz and an issue of WD.
I remember being enamored by a boxed set of eldar harlequins but decided I would never be able to do them justice from a paint job perspective.

My first mini was a Dwarf adventurer in 1987, shortly followed by various human adventurer types and a copy of WD93. Suffice to say RT [released in that isue] blew my mind and sasoon as I could save up £10 [allot in them days] I bought the RTB001 space marines and covered them in about 1/2 and inch of blue paint and some sort of white U on the shoulders. Twas all the rage back then! Deciding that these were not up to scratch I procured some squats and the rest is history!

Tyranid Warriors back in 4th edition, thought they looked great! As it turns out, they were quite bad in 4th but now they're my Shrikes in the newish codex.
In Fantasy it was a battalion box of Dark Elves. They have pirates, ninjas, dinosaurs, half-naked women, multi-headed dragons, and big blasty magic. What's not to love?

After a bunch of random model tanks and rockets and stuff, my first warhammer miniature was a plastic skeleton chariot my dad got me for xmas when I was 10. The box for it still forms the core of my bitz box - with some of the bone-colored plastic bits still in there! - but things have definitely moved on since then ... First warhammer army was lizardmen for fantasy, with their rules and the release of 5th edition. I had 4th but didn't really get into gobs or helves, but lizards clicked with my monster-loving self First 40k 'army' was a bunch of metal necrons at the end of 2nd edition, but really it was blood angels with the release of 3rd - because I like the color red maybe? And the extra skullness. Though honestly I had wanted to play chaos since the first issue of White Dwarf I ever flipped through, and I drooled over the (then new) box of metal chaos terminators at my FLGS for months and months but could never afford them. Now at long last the future has finally arrived, and I play chaos across all systems - Salvage
