Ive been toying with this idea for illuminated flying base for my sons necron lords, this one is green but I can do them in other colours, blue, white, red/pink, rainbow colours, they either flash about constantly or can be set to react to sound and touch, the only downside is under the disc is a square black box that holds the batteries, im trying to think of ways to disguise this, any ideas.

here is a short video of it working

Feedback would be welcome though.

If you used that in a game you would. Everyone would be too busy looking at it to pay attenetion to the game.

ooooooooooh, pretty.

Ask yourself: have you rated a gallery image today?

It looks really cool, as for disguising the bottom, what about building a base around it? One that lets it go into a recess, but you can still pull it out to change the batteries as needed.

Funny you should say that, im already considering listing these on ebay once ive sussed the base out, was thinking about modelling something out of green stuff, keep it simple, or even selling them as a kit with some greenstuff so people can model thier own bases? wadda ya think????

What voltage is the unit? Potentially could hide it in groundwork / or the models themselves.

Multiples of this would be great in strategic parts of a Monolith.

Already looking into a monolith, as for the power supply on them, all the electronics including a on/off/sound activated switch and two triple A batteries are housed under the disk in a small black box 60mm long by 48mm wide with the depth from edge of disk to base being 23mm so quite large, just need to disguise the box some way.

Since it's already significantly larger than the bases destroyers usually go on (it is, right? I don't play Necrons...), making things a little larger wouldn't really hurt. I'd try and get/make a wooden/MDF disk just large enough to circumscribe the box (plus a few mm clearance) and cut out a rectangle for it to drop into. The light-up disk sits above it, flush to the surface. Individuals can then paint it uniformly or add basing material to disguise the edge. If access to the batteries is facing down, the box and disk could be permanently mounted together, meaning basing material could overlap the edge of the light-up disk without getting torn off every time the batteries needed changing.

im looking at some plastic tubing (black) that I can cut to the right height, and fix to the base of the disk, the batteries can be got at still as can the power switch, will have a look in our local hardware store tomorrow, will report back on my findings later.

Along with that, you could use the short rod on the clear stand rather than the long one so your models don't stand significantly higher than others and it evvens the hight out with the addition of the base, which, if you worry about disadvantages in a game, would make it harder for your units to hide or conceal or get cover.

That's amazing! But is seems really loud. I would think that would get quite annoying after a while...

Might I say, as someone who has a questionable love for shiny things, I love it.

I wish there was some way I could have one of these on my Tyranids or Dark Eldar and make sense.

Maybe not. Electrical Doom of Malan'tai? Perhaps.

I quite agrre, the video and pictures are of the unit switched to constant on, they can also be switched to sound/touch activated, where it only activates then, and the effect is not as loud as you say.

Yesterday I spent a whole day going around different hardware stores and couldnt find anything this would sit in nicely with, So think its going to have to be some green stuff, modelled around the base, to look like rocks or something. will update the thread when its finished.

very cool , but i think you would have to make it a lot thinner if it were for gaming and not just a display peice, really suits the model though. did you make the whole thing from scratch or is ita kit built type thing?

No these are not a kit, I cant claim credit for buiding these, wish I could or I would of made them alot thinner, Im just waiting for my GS to arrive that I ordered and I will do the base up and will post some updated pics once done. its a shame really, Ive opened it up to see if I could make it smaller, its just the 2 AAA batteries that make it so dam thick. and as im considering producing these for sale I dont want to be messing around too much with the gubbings inside the control box.

Looks like you can order these on amazon as well as other places for about $20. These would definitely looks sweet in a monolith, though I'd imagine you'd have to rebuild the entire front panel.

They also do come in 6" size for about $30-40. How big is a webway portal?

I'd kick a kid off his 10 speed in front of my mamma for a tutorial thread on how to do this.

Although a parts list would be adaquete.

If I were you, I'd look at the 60mm bases, and then sculpt a rough shape around the black box. Easy enough to magnetize it at the same time, which would make changing batteries later cake.

Small blast template. The current limited edition one GW are selling are domed things similar to the vortex grenade template but since webway portals don't count for line of sight purposes a flat paper template of the right size and a nice design still works just as well. And because of the same LoS thing, if that was about the right size and the box bit didn't stick out too much it could certainly work as one.

Would it be possible to replace the bulky AAA batteries, is it possible to replace them with the flat disk watch ones?

Like I said, I dont want to mess around too much with the electronics inside these things, as my supplier will offer me a guarentee with them provided they remain un-molested so to speak, Im already looking at a webway portal for theese, as I can source an acrylic dome that will fit over these nicely, and I can have it in flourescent colours, the same as the alternative coloured necron rods I do, please bare with me on the finished product, im waiting for some GS to arrive that I ordered (uk postal system is starting to slow down already for xmas here) as soon as It turns up I will start modelling something, but as im most definately an amature dont hold your breath for an awsome jaw dropping base!!! but I will try my best.

i love this thing. Very original and great for an army general of some sort. My only gripe is the lighting is too fast and takes the eye off the model. If possible, slow it down. Otherwise... very cool.
