This was my first ever game against one of the guys running my local GW.
My army: Orks.
Warboss + PK. Was a slow and gave him a BP instead of 'eavy armor. Luckily it didn't matter.
90pts

Troops
20 boyz + nob with PK and BP.
160pts

5 nobs w stickbombz
105 pts

Elites
5 Lootas
75 pts

Fast Attack
2 Deffkoptas
70 pts

His army: SM
SM Captain w power weapon and digital pistol

Troops
10 tactical marines w 1flamer and 1 launcher.
5 (or 6) scouts. 1 launcher and the rest with sniper rifles.

Heavy
1 dreadnought. He took the multimelta. I have no idea why, but I'm glad!

Transport
1 Rhino w storm bolter.

Game type: Seize ground
Deployment: Pitched battle.

The field was 4x4, with a road down the centre, and 4 buildings (trapezoid formation. 2 close to one another near the middle on my left, 2 on my right closer to each of our table edges).

We rolled 4 points and they ended up 1 in each of the 2 buildings on my left, and 2 out in the open inbetween the buildings on my right.

I won the roll and opted to go first.

Ork Deployment
Nobs couldnt quite make it into the left building (with intention of holding the objective there), so they hid behind it.
Lootas camped out in the building on the right, giving them a good field of fire.
Boys and warboss were up against the left table edge, planning on running up and making some use of some light cover on the way to the building with the other objective.
Deffkoptas sat behind the building the lootas were in (this building was MASSIVE so they were able to be right up against the 12" line).

SM Deployment
His scouts just managed to fit inside the other building containing an objective.
The dreadnought hid behind some cover behind that, waiting for my boys.
The marines deployed in 2 groups. 1 (with captain, and flamer) sat in the Rhino behind the other building. While the other group w launcher were set up in it.

Scout move: Turbo boosted DKs up behind his rhino.

Ork turn 1
Boys ran forward.
Lootas shot twice at the scouts to limit their chances of pinning my boyz if I happen to roll poorly, killing 1.
DKs shoot at the rear armor of the rhino, shaking it.
Nobs enter the building with the objective.

SM turn 1
Scouts moved up into the building more to give them clear lines of fire.
Captain, Sgt, and flamer shot at the DKs causing 1 wound.
Dread fires melta at boyz killing 1.
Launcher squad let rip on my lootas, and managed to kill 2. Passed leadership roll.

Ork turn 2
DKs repeated first turn antics.
Lootas fired once at the launcher squad, killing 1.
Boyz had some trouble navigating the barricade they were using as cover, but are now no longer in cover.
Nobs moved up the building.

SM turn 2
Cap, Sgt, and flamer let rip on the DKs again finishing off both.
Launcher fired at my lootas again, killing ANOTHER 2 despite scattering slightly. They fail their roll and are GONE.
Scounts now have fewer targets and fire their launcher on my nobs, vapourising 1.
Dreadnought fires at boyz again, killing 1 or 2.

Ork turn 3
Nobs move slightly and fire a few useless shots at the scouts.
Boyz attempt to jump over barricade that runs adjacent to the building the scouts are in.
Don't think I could make an assault with a WAAAGH!! so shoot up at the scouts with everything. Only 2 scouts remain and they fail their test and run out of there.

SM turn 3
Launcher squad can now hit with bolters. Cover saves all round.
Dready leave cover and fires on boys again to no effect.
Rhino cruises to far side of the scouts building.

Ork turn 4
Launch the WAAAGH!! Boyz assault the rhino and wreck it.
Nobs move out of bolter range.

SM turn 4
Flamer squad kill a heap of boyz.
Dread assaults boyz and kills 1.... maybe.
Launcher fires and scatters into the captains back. Saves.

Ork turn 5
Continue the assault. Warboss EXPLODES the dread, and range is 4" hitting all boys and the Flamer squad.
1 marine and 3 boys dead. Boys now number 6 + nob + warboss (please excuse if the kill count doesn't = this number, I can't remember exactly how many died when, just that I was left with 6).
Heres the mistake I made: I consolidated into the crater instead of towards the objective.

SM turn 5
Pistols and flamer whipe out my remaining boys, only nob and warboss left standing. Test passed.
They then assault my boys. Horrible rolls mean they kill nothing, and the warboss kills the captain in return.
Launcher fires a shot off at the nobs in the hope of killing one and me failing a moral test, but it fails to wound.

Game ends.

I hold 1 objective clearly.
But his assaulting squad are JUST within 3" from another one. And my warboss & nob are JUST outside 3".
He gives it to me anyway as his marines are still in combat.

While my lootas and deffkoptas ultimately didn't really do anything, they did soak up 2 turns of shooting, which made them totally worth it. Boys not getting shot = happy ork player.

Most people I see just scout move them and T1 assault

Yeah but that only works if you have turn 1, and besides outflanking can have you come in right next to their stuff rather than having to move forward and therefore you get the side armor of targets.

It works less effectively if you don't have turn 1 (vehicles have often moved, you've been shot down) - but I find it works more effectively than outflanking - but then again, I make terrible reserve rolls and then often come in on the wrong side... Even if shot down, they usually have diverted attention from my Trukks - which they can't do if they are outflanking...

I think that you win. You held one objective, and you contest an objective if you are within 6" not 3". Great game.

As far as list building advice and such, there is a great ork tactics article on this site.

The SM list was basically flawed and the dreadnought wasting melta shots on ork infantry was a laugh...

Well done on your win!
