JB: I like the concept of a free Shrike roaming through the treetops of the jungle. I'm not sure that I like the idea of a real Shrike sitting on my couch eating my Skittles.

No, I meant a more "dignified" basket or "bucket" like a hot air balloon bucket lowered or raised on a winch, it could be made to look metallic, to protect them as it is raised or lowered on large winches. one or two per side, big enough to land a squad each.

Looks like a firefighter bucket to me. ^^
I was not mocking, I was making a valid suggestion that I felt would fit the way he wants to go.
No right minded Praetorian would ruin or muss his uniform by rapelling, very undignified, but lowered in an armored basket with a drop door would be so much more their style. Lowered in a stately manner so to speak.

The buckets are being used to help fight the fires in North Israel.
The idea of baskets sounds good to me
They could have slits for firing through as they are lowered
Don't ask about accuracy as it swings in the airstream!

hmmm i will be giving that bucket idea a night to sleep over with...heck IIRC i think i have some parts that would fit the bill....argh have to do the base tommorow then i can think straight for that idea...
chibi your a laugh^^ at first i actually thought you dug a genuine pic up of a landing bucket, then i scrolled further and i saw the firebucket... LMAO...
shrike had the idea of parachutes but they are not really my taste...makes them so damn sporty...not what i had in mind...
they would loose much glamour that way, same with roping i guess...
whats with rope ladders? would that also be too ungentlemanlike?...

Hmm, rope ladders are slow way to deploy, and too vulnerable to being shot at! The baskets could even be lowered raised from the belly area if one wanted. Shooting slits, and also the chance to be just big enough for some chairs to sit, sip tea, and or read the daily journal while their comrades take shots at the enemy like a sport hunter would, fitys very much in my book!^^

athought just came across my mind...: what about a strawlike pipe for decending troops in, extendable... and with antigrav thingys in it...woulod loose a lot of fun then but easy to build i guess and also could help to support the structure...

Ilike the idea of the baskets, or landing bunkers, that are lowered to the battlefield , bristling with guns, pretorians /mordians running out the back bayonets attatched! very immaginative and different. like a steampunk, beach landing craft , from ww2. If your gonna do a anti grav field then halo's covenant ships do the very well, a base is lowered down via a anti grav lift for vehicles and then troops can descend via the grav lift also.

I had this image in my head last night and did a quick pencil drawing this morning.
Just inked it up a tad to see if it will show better
Am trying to think head to a Steampunk Group Build
I had no idea what the pipes were for and assumed anti-grav.
(Something has to make this lump of metal above the clouds )

no seriuosly, i wish i was able to sketch/draw like you...
that too is a very good looking airship.
i thought of some landing pipes...well actual pipes really, steelclad ones with rivets...and in regular intervals you have small devices that could be used as antigrav engines...this said it asks one question chibi kind of answered... i could go the full monty and declare the uplifting methode to be just as well antigrav...but would steamppowered antigrav be thinkable? i know fantasy and creativity has now boundaries but would you nod in aprovement for that?
hmmm...
also totaly go for a steampunk project chibi...a new oportunity to nick ideas from^^
