Ohh, going to have to look some of those guys up, damn you for showing them to me
OK, so briefly, I'm liking the crossbow guy, Dr Laz, and all 4 of the Menoth(?) guys. They all have a lot of potential there, Gideon is pretty cool too, but I think changing him enough so he's not Gideon may lose some of that cool factor.
As has been covered already, Inquisitors are pretty personal choices, don't rush the decision if it's not happening,. I'm sure whatever you come up with is going to be cool and barely rercognisable as the base model, wherever you go
Asylum_Inmate - go for it, those should look good together, I went for a scout pack on mine too, matched with a marine torso and a cryx warcaster robe

Yeah, the scout backpack looks really good on inquisitors its compact and the scanner thing that sticks up looks very high tech,
Oh, I saw this figure this morning and felt the need to share it as he looks very imperial, I doubt he will work for your inquistor as he would be a pain to weaponize

He's quite limited as the pose he is in makes it hard for anyone but pretty skilled converters to do anything with him. If you could just swap his arms easily I would have probably bought one of them myself
There is one more model I want to share with you then I will let some one else have a go (I do enjoy playing hunt the obscure miniature), its not available yet but seeing as you have looked an other commissar style models how about this, its actually being made by a Dakka member (IceSword) and I believe its in the casting stage so should be available fairly soon

That's a nice one Inmate. But I'm afraid I've decided already. I'll be getting the Reeve Hunter and the Protectorate Reclaimer (aka the guy with the pelts and the one holding the cross) and work on them both. I assume this will result in the Hunter becoming the inquisitor and the reclaimer being his acolyte. To be precise it will take some days to trim down that order of miniatures to just a handful, I'm interested in waaaay more, just for this project. Even though my significant other has no such direct control over my purchases, as seems to hold true for others here, I still have to keep an eye on my money. Since I started buying bits and miniatures on ebay (after not using ebay in years), my funds have magicly vanished. Anyway, it's back to the painting table now! After not having a lot time to paint this week, I'm planning to finish Adalhard some time this weekend. Cheers and wish me some luck with the weathering...

Well, then don't wait any longer!
Here we go with my second painted miniature since I'm back in the hobby.
Adalhard - former line officer of the Berlichingen Lionhearts - Sergeant of Inquisitor Iudex Probitas' Stormtroopers:
I won't go into detail about the paintjob right away, but if you're interested in certain aspects of it ask away, I'll answer of course.
Generally this has been an entertaining project. The conversion was quick and fun and I'm very happy with it.
The paintjob was fun most of the time, but I got frustrated now and then, when things wouldn't work like they were supposed to. I'm not really happy with the result, but it feels good to have painted another miniature and I learnt a lot during the process.
It gave me the chance to experiment with some techniques I only knew by theory (there are many of those) and I got to play around with old ones.
I used different types of blending techniques, made a freehand, used a decal the proper way, painted with oil color a little and so on. So I'm confident I'll improve through the upcoming projects. (Shouldn't be too hard considering the standard of this one.)
Please don't hesitate to mention weak spots, I can handle it... if you don't forget to flatter me on the other hand, that is. Just kidding, go ahead, hit me.
Oh, before I forget, the pictures are not really good, sorry. Need a new camera, an additional lamp and a diffusing cabinet. Hope you can see enough.

well it is a really great mini...the pose and the painting and the base are a good setup that i like very much. where did you got the doublebarreled shotgunpistol? wanna! if you made it yourself then please make a tut^^
as for the only weak spot i have seen, this depends on personal taste... the shells and the purity seals you did with glossy varnish? i think this detracts a lot of the rest of the mini... the color you used looks rather blood red and thus the color of shels and seals looks a bit wrong in my opinion...but as i said this is personal taste. the base looks very good, the crackling rust effects are really convincingly done! by the way... the whole mini is very well painted i particularly like the face an the beard...nice small deatils and smooth paint all the way through... so no need for selfhumbling^^
cheers, vik

Looks great Baiyun. Very nice skin, love the woodgrain and the shoulder pad, and some nice weathering on the block.
The one thing that strikes me is that the coat itself looks a little flat. Maybe the highlights are a bit too subtle, maybe it's just the pics.
Excellent job overall

makes me want to step up my game, not that i am going to be able to produce anything like that, not without a LOT of practice, been a few years since I actually put brush to miniature and then the finished result looked like it had been painted by a toddler who was being tazered

Sadistic Inquisitorial Excruciator
Preston/England/United Kingdom
|
I though he looked bloody great at this stage:
He looks immense at this stage:
I really like the addition of the purity seals, they really change the models purpose. The =I= symbol on the sword gives the model its needed Inquisitorial vibe. It took him from guardsman to Inquisitorial Storm Trooper. Oh and for some reason the shotgun shells make him look so much more,...um... for want of a better term, hard ass.
As Viktor von Domm said you really don't need to be self humbling with this one.
The following comments are based on the pictures so in the flesh it might look a little different:
The base is just stunning, did you use salt in the weathering technique?
Please explain the technique in graph detail. Especially how you did the rust one the floor.
The colours you've chosen complement each other well and he comes across as being from a feudal world and very Inquisitionally.
The wood grain and hair is very well done, I really like the pale gun stock.
The metal on the shoulder pads and gun stock are really nice
The colour of the =I= is a lovely contrast
I like the colours on the swords handle - what did you use?
Ok so thats the flattery out of the way so time to be cruel not really but I am being overly critical with my second two of the three points below.
The only thing I don't like about the model is the gloss varnish. I really think he needs to be matt varnished. Did you use different varnishes on the base and miniature?
The chain mail vest/The gold on his coat and sword hilt, boot tips, could do with a little more highlighting/shading or contrast - like the shotgun stock.
The coat could do with a little more highlighting, at the moment it does look somewhat flat (I think this one is probably the picture as I find cloaks/coats often hard to photograph).
The model really is excellent and I'm even more excited to see more painted stuff from you.
Actually one last thing that might be worth considering for future projects. The model is very much one sided and so when playing games with him the flat black back of the "engine block" will look a bit out of place. Perhaps next time you create a base in a similar vein you could make it detailed in all 360 degrees.

Glad you recognize the small touches. I'm also quite happy with the addition of the shells. For the purity seals, I only added the one on his left shoulder and it turned out to look a bit stiff, but not too bad. Talking about the "inquisitorial vibe", what do you think about the golden freehand on his shoulder pad?
As Viktor von Domm said you really don't need to be self humbling with this one.
Believe me I'm not in danger of being too humble, but when it comes to painting I'm quite harsh not just with myself. One should never settle with what he does. There is a saying in chinese which I recite often: 自强不息 "Improve yourself without rest."
The base is just stunning, did you use salt in the weathering technique? Please explain the technique in graph detail. Especially how you did the rust one the floor.
No salt involved. I thought about it, but for such a rather small object I thought it's too annoying to set up my airbrush equipment. So I didn't use salt on this one.
The whole process of the "green" parts of the base went like this:
1. Grey primer basecoat (Vallejo)
2. Green sky basecoat (Vallejo MC)
3. Dark Sea Blue shading (Vallejo MC)
4. Umbra Wash shading (Vallejo)
5. Black Wash shading (Vallejo)
6. Highlights in 50/50 Green Sky/Ivory (Vallejo MC)
7. Painted the rusted spots with an old brush using Tank Brown (Vallejo Model Air) and highlighted them with the mix from step 6
8. Mixed Burnt Siena Pigments with water and painted it into the rusty spots and some recesses (Vallejo Pigments)
9. Brushed any excess of pigments off with a soft make up brush and "bleeded out" the rusty spots
10. Diluted Burnt Umbra with white Spirit and sloppily painted it into the rusty spots and places where I wanted a lot of grime (Rico Oil Colors)
11. Took a clean brush with white spirit and blended the oil color into the surfaces
I messed it up in step 11, I used to much force and my brush was too stiff. Next time I'll be using a softer brush to get clearly visible bleed lines/water stains.
The rust on the metal parts of the base is just Burnt Siena Pigments applied with water and then gently brushed off. The color underneath alters the look of course. It was done similarly to the green parts, using Dark Sea Blue, Umbra Wash and Black Wash.
The wood grain and hair is very well done, I really like the pale gun stock.
I'm quite fond of the hair. The sculpt was totally flat and I thought there needed to be some structure. Same for his eyebrows, I added vertical lines to make them more "brushy", didn't want them to look like makeup or give him no brows at all. I'm glad you recognized it, maybe my own favorite detail.
The wood grain is a mess. On the pale stock it somehow worked, but the other part looks awful to my eyes. Overall not satisfied with it, but I'll keep it as a reminder for the next time I paint woodgrain. (The retinue will have a lot of it.)
The metal on the shoulder pads and gun stock are really nice
The gunmetal refused to look like intended, in the end I just gave it another highlight and let it be. The shoulder pad metal at one stage looked really cool, but I had to redo it because I'd been sloppy and I didn't get it to look the same again.
The colour of the =I= is a lovely contrast
It's called "White". I actually feel bad about it, because I didn't shade it in any way, but I agree it stands out well and thats what it's good for.
I like the colours on the swords handle - what did you use?
That's Vallejo Model Color Reflective Green with Dark Sea Blue Shading and a 80/20 Reflective Green/Ivory highlight.
The only thing I don't like about the model is the gloss varnish. I really think he needs to be matt varnished. Did you use different varnishes on the base and miniature?
You said it, Vikk said it and I wasn't sure about it to begin with. You're both right of course, it's distracting and doesn't make that much sense. Since it will take just a minute, I'm intending to change that.
I actually didn't really varnish him at all. I like to put a coat of satin varnish on any part I finish, so I can brush of any "ooopsie, how did that get there"-cases. The coat and other leather/cloth parts got a layer of matt varnish and the red parts got some gloss. The base is not varnished at all (the oil isn't dry yet). I'm considering giving the whole model a coat of matt spray varnish (which I need to buy first).
You're not overly critic here, you're right. The metal parts don't have enough contrast. And the leather both brown and black has better highlights in real life, even though they are much more subtle than most people do it for tabletops.
This is actually one of my real weaknesses: I'm too careful and insecure with highlights, I need to be more bold with them. I know they would look better, but while painting I keep thinking "too much, too much, too visible". I'm working on it.
The highlights on the black actually turned out really cool by the way, they are subtle and smoothly blended, just like it was supposed to. Hard to see in the gakky pictures.
Actually one last thing that might be worth considering for future projects. The model is very much one sided and so when playing games with him the flat black back of the "engine block" will look a bit out of place. Perhaps next time you create a base in a similar vein you could make it detailed in all 360 degrees.
You're certainly right for gaming purposes, but I consider Adalhard to be a showpiece more than a miniature for gaming. He might be used in a couple of games, if our campaign ever gets there, but I made him just for the joy.
In this regard I'm really happy with the onesidedness, there are just two or three angles he is supposed to be looked at (even though the highlight on the back of his coat turned out best ).
For gaming I will also remove the block from his base, it's not glued on and I'm considering to fix it with magnets, instead of wire, for more convenient removal.
The model really is excellent and I'm even more excited to see more painted stuff from you.
Thank you, I think I'm even more excited. Next one up for painting is my half finished Delaque juve. Shouldn't be too long before I finish him.

Superb detail in your painting Baiyuan, i especially like his hair the thin streaks really give it depth , a dthe contrast of his shotgun shells on his shoulder look great also. The green machinery weathering is top notch aand his skin tone is very nice . The bits iam not so keen on are the fact the his midrif looks a bit busy, could be the glossy puritrys seals , which do look good , could be the brassy gold on the sword hilt and skull bet buckle, i dont think you can do much about it though on a model that is this detailed though, it will always look a bit much . The wood grain is really nicely done. something i havent yet been able to achieve myself. and i think the purity seal paper adds just enough lightness around his head and shoulderes giveing that halo effect with the shiny silver shoulder pad. i wasnt too keen on the shotty barrels at first , but i think i chnaged my mind . is it possible to see the model from a slightly further away , as i think he would benefit from some perspective. Very very imppresive job overall Baiyuan , and i look forward to seeing more lovely paintjobs on this level from you mate. by the way i only critiiqe because you insist matey , i really tried hard to find what i did not like about the wondeful modlel

Thanks for the comments guys! Especially to Neil101 for taking the time to go into detail, I appreciate that. Viktor von Domm wrote:where did you got the doublebarreled shotgunpistol? wanna! if you made ityourself then please make a tut^^
Sorry I forgot to answer this one. I described it earlier, when I posted the WIP pics. The sawn off consists of a double barreled shotgun from the new Orlock box and the original laspistol the vostroyan was carrying. I've sawn off the grip and trigger of the shotgun. Shortened the muzzle of the pistol down to the significant, that you find under every las barrel, cut off the magazine and then filed the top down, so that the shotgun part fit in smoothly. That's it. In other news: I spent an hour or two working on some conversions today and also had some new ideas. One of those ideas made me watch the chronicles of Riddick once more. Feel free to guess what part I'll put into a miniature... I also worked on the guardsmen with the full-auto "sweeper" pattern shotgun, looks good so far, still have some details I want to include and must sculpt the helm. Another thing I attended was the firearm for my upcoming true scale marine. It will be a while till I can start the actual conversion, because I have to wait for all the parts, but I have it all in my head. An Imperial Fist battle captain on a repentance mission. He will have a lot of self punishment and an exotic gun going on. I'm working on the gun atm and I'm quite sure you haven't seen anything like it yet (at least not on marines). It will also be very in games terms. So much for this evening. To the bat cave!!! I mean painting table...

A very nice model. It's a testament to your painting that he doesn't immediately look like a Vostroyan. Interestingly, he looks a lot more feudal than the "techno-baroque" of the Vostroyans. I think you've done a good job, and it's certainly a great job.

That's it.
thanks mate! but now i have to ask you how you made the shells? this look is the fashion in my book these days^^

The shells were very easy.
You need plastic cutters or a knife and a scout biker box.
Take the sprues out of the box.
Look for a strap with shotgun shells.
Release it from the sprue...
Ok, I think you get it.
I only drilled open the empty spaces in the strap and bend the whole belt, so that it fits around the shoulder pad. (The gakky little thing broke in two of course and I had to do some sculpting too.)

Thank you. About the inquisitor, like I wrote earlier I've decided which one I'll take:
It's forming in my mind already, he has the basic elements and will leave me a lot room for conversion.

Cheers for the run downs. Even if you did botch step 11 (I bet only you can see the botch) on the engine block, it looks excellent.
Its called White
Talking about the "inquisitorial vibe", what do you think about the golden freehand on his shoulder pad?
I totally missed it. I was distracted by the gloss varnish shotgun shells. The free hand looks good but I'll hold final judgement until I see it again re-varnished.
I know what you mean about being insecure about that final highlight. CMDante has mentioned it about some of my work, Warlord Spinetail.
One should never settle with what he does. There is a saying in chinese which I recite often: 自强不息 "Improve yourself without rest."
So I've taken that bit of wisdom and given one more highlight to the majority of my Magos. Its worked on the metal parts but I'm not so sure about the grey armour plates. Oh well.
Cheers
Peter

Alrighty peeps. I revarnished Adalhard and took care of a spot where I only applied the basecolor and forgot to shade and highlight (lucky nobody saw it). I also took out that half finished Delaque juve and made another attempt at the skin, which frustrated me rather quickly and scared me into playing DOW2 the rest of the night. After work and a visit from my parents I had only little time for the hobby today, two hours to be precise. I used that time to work on three projects. Nanus, the heavy with the gatling, the trooper with the assault shottie, you know from the wips and messed around with different poses for my "Riddick" project. Nanus will need a lot of GS soon and some more detailing. I need to replace an exhaust that has broken off at some point, I need to smoothen out the top of his gatling, sculpt the handles, sculpt the ammo counter, sculpt his face/mask/goggles, fill the gaps in the ammo feed, attach his sidearm and so on. Quite some work to do, but today I at least managed to find a new sidearm and improve it, decided to cut off his nose, brows, ears and beard, improved the fit of the ammo feed, filed down a photo etch part that stuck out where it shouldn't and sanded his coat some more to minimize mold lines even more (the sculpt wasn't the best one). Didn't do much on the shottie, but tried some stuff and decided, that it needs a hanging strap, laser targeter and more details. Postponed for the moment, I focus on finishing Nanus. About the "Riddick" project I don't want to say much. It's going to be for the witch hunter and will support him in his main task. Free cookies if can guess what it's going to be.
