I like the Wu Ming. And I think the orange is a nice little burst of color to make them stand out a bit. I like it when camo units have a little bit of something to make them stand out a bit.

highlord tamburlaine wrote:You're painting the dip on now? How? With those sponge brushes?
Any advantages to doing it that way versus buying the ink washes and going to town? After all, you're still having to brush it all on.
If it gives a better protective coat than just a layer of ink (and a dull coat naturally) I might have to try that out, what with the way the kids tend to manhandle everything within reach.
No, the sponge brushes are just for cleanup. The local dollar store has some smallish, cheap housepainting brushes. I think the things have about a 1" width. It's a little large, but it does give much better control over the amount of dip used on the figure.
The biggest advantage it has over just using ink washes and matte varnish is that the dip forms a nice, solid protective coating over the figure's paint. Once it's on, they won't scratch or chip unless you're really trying to scratch them. Plus, the shading that the dip provides is more subtle than just using washes. I do still use the washes. Mainly it's just for areas I want to darken, like folds in clothes.
The biggest disadvantages to using dip are that 1)it can be messy, 2)it takes 24 hours for it to fully dry, 3)it'll ruin any kind of brush you use, 4)you still have to dull coat, unless you like shiny minis. Still though, I think that the fact that it can give you a nice looking miniature without having to have amazing painting skills and be protective against chipping and help hold on those pesky bits that like to fall off far outweighs the negative aspects of dipping.
Now, because when I get in my groove, I can be a painting machine, I just nearly finished up a Barid for my Haqqislam.
I know, he's not done, but he's close to it. There's still the rifle, his visor, whatever that thing on his right hip is, and the eyepiece to do. I'll do those tomorrow probably. Except the visor. I'll be doing that after I have him dipped.
This is a neat little figure. I really like his design. But, for the life of me, I cannot figure out why he seems to be more expensive than the other Hassassins. He's like a buck more for some reason. I still haven't really learned how hacking works in the game (though my overall understanding of many of the abilities is growing) nor do I know if this guy is even worth his in-game cost. But, he looks cool and will probably wind up being used in some other games as a result.

Hacking sounds neat, lock down heavy infantry tags and remotes. You might have access to a remote with eva or whatever its called, gives you more powers, and ii think you can guide missiles around. Plus defend against that stuff, ooh and screw with drop ships deploying drop infantry.
Models are looking good.

Barids. Are. Awesome.
Besides just being a totally badass sculpt, they gave the Hassassin Bahram sectorial something they sorely lacked, a Hacker. The thing about Haqq, is that they have hella Willpower, so being able to tap into that is a must. Hackers and Doctors are the name of the game there.
Barids also give you a good, fluffy option for also including Remotes in your force without having to get a shittier Hacker option. So you could have a Barid and a Farzan with FO and a GML or something.
And, AND! ...he looks awesome.

Which they are! They're pretty much the line troops of the Hassassins. Everybody gets to be a Muyib before befing something else that is more specialized and awesome.

Thanks Soulcow. The Shang Ji is one of my favorite Yu Jing figures. I hope there'll be more varieties of them in the Invincible Army sectorial.
You guys asked for a dipping tutorial, so I made one. Unfortunately, I didn't have any sponge brushes on hand, so you'll have to make do with how I do it using the paintbrush. Unfortunately, I couldn't add more pictures because it was just me at the time and I didn't have anyone else present to photograph the process. It's kind of hard to take pics and do the dipping at the same time. Also, for some reason the bottom pic kind of got cut off, but that one's not important anyway.

Yeah, now if only I could actually get around to painting that terrain. That'll be the day.
I'll go ahead and share the new figures.
Here's my fully finished Hassassin Barid.
He's such a cool looking figure. I need to pick up a Farzan to hang out with him sometime.
Here's my Al Waziri/Alguacile stand-in courtesy of Hasslefree. Sometime soon I should be getting two more. They'll get to hang out with my Qapu Kalqi team.
My finished, camouflaged Wu-Ming, #18
And a new guy to hang out with my desert Combined Army, a Shasvastii Shrouded.
I still don't get why they call this guy a Shrouded. He doesn't have a shroud. If anything, he looks more like he should be a Malignos.

Just a few WIPS I was working on today. I really wish I had more time in the day to mess with these things.
From L-R: A Unity Council AJAX suit, a SWAT Officer (actually a Reaper Delta Force guy), a Stim Hound, a Hasselfree Grymn Power Armor, an Infinity Santiago Knight, and an Urban War female Retarius.
That Grymn armor is going to wind up with my Deadzone Brokkrs. Maybe if I grab a few more, I can completely replace the Hearthguard that come in the starter with them. I think fluff-wise, it'll be a weaponized mining suit. When they come out, the Mechadrome light mech I've pledged for will also be joining the Brokkrs as an Iron Ancestor stand-in.
The Stim Hound didn't come out quite as I'd hoped. I've seen shepherds with similar colors before, but I think he wound up looking too much like a fox (what does he say?). I may strip it and start over with a tan instead.
The Santiago Knight. I've been in a bit of a quandary about what to do with his heraldry. Should I keep him a Santiago Knight, or make him into a Hospitaller to match my re-assigned Templar from the first page?
That Urban War Retarius has been giving me issues. I had to sculpt her whole left arm. I think I did okay, considering it's the first time I've really had to do that. I'd contacted Urban Mammoth about the missing piece, but I never heard anything back. I assume they must've gone under in the last few years. I also received one of their power armored gladiators as well. I have this strange urge to get more of those Junker Gladiators and supplement them with some of those Hundred Kingdom and Reaper gorilla gladiators.
Lastly, there's that SWAT officer. He'll be the start to my Fear and Faith Police team. I'm thinking that next month I'm going to bite the bullet and special order the Tactical Miniatures rookie cop set through FRP. I think them, plus this guy should be enough to give me a decent team.

I see what you were trying to do with the Shepherd, and I think at the moment, he just sort of looks like a dog cosplaying as an orangutan. I think its the contrast between the orange and black, I know the fur color you're thinking of, and I think it needs to be a lot darker to work. Maybe blend it into the face a little with some drybrush of the orange into the black.
That is as orange as I could find. It still is rather brown. Maybe you just went with too agressive an orange?
I'm sure you'll hammer something out.

I've got two dips that I use depending on the color of the model. For earthy tones, I use Army Painter Strong Tone. For everything else, I use Minwax Polyshade Tudor.
I just got back from the FLGS. I have a problem, I think. I can't stay away from their consignment case. I just bought another Eldar Warlock and a bag of 7 Space Marines (4 marines, 1 scout, 2 Terminators). The awesome thing is that the bag cost me all of $2!

Well when its that cheap... I had a similar impulse/control issue with eBay for awhile. Then I graduated to kick starter.
Hell I think I've had more fun just doing the buying part of some cheaply deals like that than I have had seeing some movies. And certain fast food trips... verily, there are worse things on which to dispense your disposable income.

Well, I managed to retain some self control and not start a new project. Rather, I worked on some of the figures from last week. Tonight, I finished up my Dwarven Power Armor and did more work on my Santiago Knight.
So, the Santiago Knight.... I decided to go with Hospitaller markings after all.
This way he'll fit in better with my existing knight. I know the cross is kind of rough looking, but most of it will be covered by his arm and the gun. I'll just need to clean up the loincloth a bit. Personally, I think he turned out much better than my first knight.
my Brokkr mining suit
I like this sculpt. These are neat little figures and they scale well with Mantic's stuff. I'm thinking after I do the dipping, I'll dirty up his legs with some dry brushing so it looks a bit more used.

He does scale pretty well with them, and I hadn't realized you had some forge fathers already , they look nice.
Good, atmospheric shot too, I'm going to have to take some notes when I decide to get camera happy. The bridge and foreground rubble frame it well and there's a living scene behind them that really sets the mood.
Knight also looks pretty cool! I've never been drawn to Pan-O, but I have a feeling that I wouldn't mind painting the models if I just randomly acquired some. The ORC, for instance.

You should at least grab a few figures. There's some that are pretty cheap on Ebay with free shipping. Get a few and see how you like painting them.
The PanO knights are kind of hit and miss with me. Some I really like, others I don't. Up until CB released the pics of the Santiago box, those guys have done absolutely nothing for me. Once I saw those pictures though, it was like a switch was flipped and suddenly I wanted some. Must be some kind of conspiracy or something.
In my last Hasslefree order, I got one of their Modern Adventurers, McKenzie and I could not decide how I wanted to paint her. I knew I didn't want her to be with my Infinity Al-Waziri, so that was out and I didn't want to do her up in that generic tan and green combo. Then she'd look like just about everything else I've done. The more I thought about it, the more I was wanting to do her in a woodland camo scheme. Unfortunately, my attempts at it have generally not been that good and I don't think I'm all that good at camo to begin with. So, I cobbled some figures together for some practice runs. Unfortunately, one of them I just could not photograph decently due to how he was posed. Plus, I wasn't all that happy with him. The second guy though, I think I managed to pull it off.
I think he actually looks decent. The armor is also a bit darker in person, so it contrasts a bit better with the fatigues. I think I'm about ready to try this color scheme on McKenzie.
Also, I've had a Land Speeder Storm sitting around since I moved that's been only partly painted. I decided to finally do something with it. Unfortunately, at this point I'm missing the seats that go in the back and the gunner that goes in the front. I've decided to cannibalize the Marine Scouts that go with the thing and make it into a small transport for my Danamians. I'm thinking since it's too small to carry very many guys, maybe it could be a medevac or something.
I'd love to kitbash a Huey into a sci-fi VTOL, but I have no faith in my kitbashing skils. So, this will have to do for now.

Alright, I added the wash this morning. It's a little heavy on the face, but I'll clean it up later.
More importantly, the thread title promises a new Al-Waziri for Qapu Kalqi. Here he is.
I had some difficulty with assembly unfortunately, You may notice a slight gap where his right arm meets his torso. I couldn't get the arm to sit flush there, while also get the left hand to sit flush with the arm. If I bent the weapon or arm to get them to sit right, then the weapon would be all gakked up. So, this was the best I could do on it. Still, I think he looks pretty good. I even managed a better freehand Nomad insignia on him!
He looks pretty good with my first Al-Waziri and McKenzie.
I've been meaning to post a pic of the completed Mobile Brigada as well.
Like I've said before, he's the first in my 150 pt. Woodland Corregidor list.
