Kind of and sort of. One of my jobs has wrapped for the year so I've got lots of time free (comparatively), but I also have more exams coming up on the 22nd and 24th, one of which is family law; which I have never studied and have no experience in.

Then, six more in January. Ho-hum.

Remember I bought stencils to apply the red stars to my minis? Yeah, that didn't work. So I tried to paint them on with a brush. That also did not work, so I bought a micro-pen and tried to draw them on. Didn't work. I even tried making a 'stamp' out of Battlefoam foam but it didn't work, so I've thrown the towel in and bought a printer and some decal paper.

Anyone got any pointers on applying water-slide transfers? Specifically, can anyone tell me what I really, really, really, really want to hear; that you don't need to gloss varnish your minis before you apply them?

Well, they go on more easily if you gloss varnish the area first - but you don't need to do the whole mini, just the area being applied to, to any natural edges. Also good to gloss varnish again after application (and drying) for protection. Whatever you varnish over the top of that - matte, satin or gloss, whole mini or area - will be the final effect.

I really don't want to have to varnish any part of the mini, honestly. 'Cause then I either have shiney shoulder-pads, or I have to matte varnish the whole mini.

You're saying I can do it without gloss but it'll be trickier? Does your answer change if I'm using Microset and Microsol?

You don't need anything more than water to apply a transfer. Anything on top of that is just to improve the quality and durability of the final result.

Microset will do a better job than water - it should reduce air bubbles, it softens the transfer a little which will work better on slightly curved surfaces, and will improve the adhesion.

A gloss surface (varnish or simply a gloss paint) is smoother, which will also reduce air bubbles, and the risk of the transfer not adhering flat to the surface.

If you can see a slight cloudiness to what should be the transparent areas of an applied transfer, it has been applied to a non gloss surface. Microset may be enough to counter this - I don't know - I've never applied transfers to anything other than a gloss surface - you would need to test it, or await further advice from other readers.

Microsol *really* softens the transfer - to the point that you will destroy it if you try to mess with it before it sets. You use it on transfers applied to non flat areas (creases, rivets) and to heal where you have applied holes to allow air bubbles to escape. Again, it may help with a non gloss surface - I don't know, I've never used it in that way.

If you are concerned with damaging the transfers due to handling, you should seal them. Any varnish will do here, but gloss is stronger.

If you are concerned with seeing the edges of the transfer, you should seal with gloss varnish. (It will fill in the ridge between the transfer and the mini so that it doesn't catch light)

That is the extent of my knowledge and experience.

If you don't have Microset, I'd test a plain water application (on a spare similiar surface) and see if it meets your needs. If that is not acceptable, or you already have Microset, do a test with Microset. If that is not acceptabe, try applying Micosol over the top and see if that improves it. If that is not acceptable, you may need to rethink the gloss thing - or get other advice

Also- if your transfers don't have any transparency in the design and you trim any transparent border, it shouldn't matter what surface you apply them to.

Some of you might have seen my post in the ...Horror Stories thread. If you didn't, almost every miniature I own (and all the stuff still on the sprue) got smashed to pieces/trashed a few days ago and as you might imagine, I'm pretty bummed out about it.

I haven't gone through it in detail to figure out if any of it might be salvageable, but it's not a complete loss in any event. Through blind luck, some of my WIP stuff was stored in a different location and escaped the devastation.

I've got the four Heretic Astartes and Syll'Esske, still, plus the seven or eight Drukhari minis I'd already built.

Yay.

Now that the dust has settled, I've come to some conclusions. I'm not giving up, 'cause that's exactly what the person who trashed my stuff wants. I am giving up on playing the game, however; I don't really enjoy it all that much any more anyway and it's going to probably take at least a year to work through and fix up enough stuff to field even 1,500pts. 'Cause that is the plan; fix everything. It's all in bits but all the bits are still there, so it's just a big geeky jigsaw waiting to be put together.

Deciding to retire as a player has had some knock-on effects on the plans for this thing. It's purely for display purposes now, so last night I sat down with my list(s) and hammered out the stuff I actually want to look at/fits my theme as opposed to units/weapons I was including to respond to TT metas, real or imagined.

The plan is still Slaanesh Daemons, Renegades & Heretics, Heretic Astartes & Chaos Knights, but now there's definitely going to be a Warhound Titan, too. The Drukhari will continue. The Barmaley Fountain is now getting its very own 2'x2' park tile. The planned board no longer needs to be modular, which means I can include larger ruins.

Larger, Brutalist ruins.

I just gotta figure out how much space I need to display a 15k force. I'm thinking 14'x4'. And, you know, buy, build and paint the other 11k I don't already possess. And fix/build and paint the 4k I already do.

EDIT - Turns out 14'x2' will do it nicely.

In the meantime, my historical obsessions have rather wandered from Rzhev to Kursk and I'm sick of painting infantry so I've rejigged my plans for the R&H; they're now going to be a mechanized force coming to the rescue of a stranded and cut-off artillery position. I have five more Cadians to paint and then it's just tanks, tanks and more tanks.

And two Valkyries.
