In the UK, we have Halfords...

In the US... I suppose you have WalMart Spray Paint? It comes recommended by some of the better Painters and Bloggers in the US.

You want primer, not spray paint. Huge difference.

I use Dupli-Coat Acrylic Enamel Primer Flat Black.

It's important that you get the Primer and that it's Flat Black as they have non-primer Black AND Glossy Black Primer AND Semi-Glossy Black Primer.

Again, you want the flat black primer. I also like the flat white primer. Too bad they don't make other primer colors. I buy mine at Auto-Zone.

AutoZone puts a sticker on the back to distinguish between the primers. The can for the gloss, semi-gloss, and flat black primers looks like this:

I use the dirt cheap Walmart flat black, too. No issues here. Have a can of the white which I haven't tried, yet, but I've been told it works just fine, as well.

I have to agree withe the krylon black primer, as well as the white, however for grey I use the rustoluem universial, really nice sprayer and handling, and I can prime in the low 40s outside

No, spraying three colors on your minis does not count as painted! 5k+

hmm, if there is I havent found it yet. Then again, I dont really look for anything else, I just accept that primer is ridiculously overpriced and try to justify my purchase somehow. If you go into a local hobby store though (hobbytown USA) im sure they might be able to suggest something

How can't you find non-overpriced primer? Walk into literally any hardware store and get a cheap can.

I've recently purchased a fewThe Army Painter colored primers as I'd like to see how well they work. This could save a ton of time on my Orks.

At $15 each, they certainly aren't cheap. But if the green goes on as well as my standard primers, the time this will save me is well worth the money.

Another Krylon man here. I've been tempted to try the Wal-Mart stuff, its odd how often it's brought up, but I don't paint enough to really be all that concerned about the price.

I'll probably get strung up for it, but buying your paint at a miniatures store is pissing your money away.

The best primer I have found is the OSH brand Primers. Their Black, White, Grey, and Red Primers provide excellent coverage with out flaking and they dry fast. I feel they are vastly superior to GW primers and the Wal Mart primers. I used to use GW primer exclusively but changed once the cost became atrocious. Once I found the OSH primers I couldn't believe I had ever used another.

Walmart flat black spraypaint $0.99 a can.

Or the glossy if you don't want to see any detail because of the xtreme glare.

While the price is certainly unbeatable you definitely get what you pay for with the Wal Mart primer. At 2.99 for a small can and 3.99 for a big can you get a lot of really high quality primer from OSH. The Wal Mart primer is, imho, worse than the GW primer, P3 Primer, or Tester Primer while the OSH brand is superior to those. YMMV but I have never been able to get behind the Wal Mart flat black spray despite the low cost.

I use Privateer press and Army Painter spray cans. At $12, the Army Painter cans are expensive, but come in many different colors. I might also suggest Armory spray cans, they only cost $6 are are fairly decent.

I also think that part of the qualification for quality is measured by the painter and the effect they are looking for. I've tried countless sprays on the market, from ridiculously expensive niche market primers to WalMart specials, and with very few exceptions I haven't noticed a difference that justifies my paying an add'l amount per can. I'm not saying that there isn't a difference between the less and more expensive primers, I'm saying that for my style of painting and degree of skill the differences obtained from the more expensive primers are of no specific benefit and thus do not warrant any additional expense.

The armies I paint are frequently dark, gritty, and dirty. I don't use highlights very much and struggle with true wet blending. I excel at washes, layered drybrushing, and achieving a tabletop quality of miniature that in many cases generate positive comments. This satisfies my immediate needs as a hobbyist and a gamer in that I receive recognition from my contemporaries and I have a nicely painted army that I can game with.

If I were more inclined to strive for absolute perfection I might consider paying much more for my primers, but currently I am not so there is no reason to do so.

To be honest I think you'll find some of the cheaper brands have a better or comparable quality to that of the GW's sprays. Walmart has some for $0.98 a can and some very good painters swear by it.
