i really wish GW based their Battleforces off of points values and made them an "army in a box"

GW might get more armies sold that way cause i would be much more inclined to start a new army if i could just buy a Battleforce as sort of a starting point, have a legal army, play some small games to see if i like it and then i could add on to it.

as it is, the GW battleforces are a complete trainwreck in way of them being good values.

some, like the Space marine force are a decent buy. the T'au force is actually a legal army in a box.

others, like the Ork force, are utterly pointless(you only save $3 over individually buying the models) or are just bad.

I'd either enjoy seeing a '1k army in a box' or, alternatively, a 'one of every FOC slot in a box' (which will usually come to around 1k points anyway).

Space Marines as the (obvious) example:

Captain
Command Squad
Terminators
Tactical Squad
Scouts
Bike Squad
Predator

Is it particlarly effective? No. Would it give you a lot of variety and enjoyment to build and paint? Oh most definetely.

Personally I think Battle forces should not contain any HQ choices, since after 2 purchases it's pretty much rendered moot.

not if it's a multi-part plastic HQ choice that will allow you to build several configurations of wargear.

thats another problem. GW doesn't make a MPP HQ for every army.

I was trying to keep it within the 80-90 pound range of a Battleforce, which meant no Exorcist (a plastic one would probably be 27), and also trying to give it a distinct feel - in this case being 100% mechanised or jump infantry.

I like idea of a legal list in a box, bare minimum obviously. Imperial guard would be easy now you get 10 man troop squads.

The issue here is that a lot of people are taking competitive lists and making them into a Battleforce. When that is simply not the way that GW operates.

I'll take Perkustin's example of IG variant 2. 3 x Valkyries in a box?!? That's £112.50 on its own without including the extra CCS and Vets and special weapons. Your looking at a basic RRP of well over £150 and that is far, far too much to pay in one go for what GW regularly advertises as an army 'booster'.

I'd like to see some variety within an 'army box', especially as the vast majority of these would be retailing at 2/3x as much as a standard battleforce. Paying a rediculous amount of money for 2 units repeated over and over doesn't seem like a great deal to me...but then thats just me.

Was there not a clue in the presence of 9 hydras in my first suggestion that i might have been taking the mickey. In reality I think battleforces should be a cheap way of boosting troop choices for example maybe have an entire platoon of guardsmen say 3 squads, PCS and 3 heavy weapons. Or for marines 1 tac squad, 1 combat squad, a razor back and rhino.
