So I was down my local GW when the manager randomly brought up that the dimensions of a Space Marine's legs are supposedly copyrighted.

I then pointed him to the much-loved character Buzz Lightyear:

Observe how, from the waist downards, he is basically a Space Marine.

The manager pointed out that GW doesn't have *that* much money to sue huge international studios...

...I pointed out that they did have enough to take down Turns Signals on a Land Raider :(

Yeah I'm pretty sure Pixar was rife with warhammer fans who would never have come up with an armored space suit pantsleg with armor plated kneecaps if it weren't for the genius creativity of GW art.

I never had thought of armor plated kneecaps before! Good thing SpaceMarines exist, let's do what they did! Kids will love the movie if he has armor plated kneecaps!

geeeeez

While we're at it, I think John Wayne's estate could get some cash off of them too, and Woody from Cheers... it was his name first...

Yeh it looks like they just go after the little guys, while sneaking from the big guys.

As you can see though the legs are different. Space Marines seem to like bell-bottoms.

That's funny, I never noticed how similar they were before. I am surprised GW at least has not tried to sue them; claiming they have a copyright on armored kneecaps

Turn Signals was 1 guy making a webcomic and it was obvious.
Pixar are a massive company and Toy Story is one of their biggest money makers.
Big difference.
Also Pixar may have already paid GW to use those legs... though i don't know.

@n0t_u

That's a custom suit... the only other legs like that come with the AoBR set... You also get one-piece shin pads on some of the tactical squad legs but the majority of SM legs are the "Lightyear model"

And purplefood, yeah... I'm aware of that, doesn't make it anymore tragic :(

Someone suing Disney (Disney owns pixar) & winning lol. It'd be like suing micro$oft they'll just tie it up in legal debates until you run out of money for lawyers.

Trade rules: lower rep trades ships 1st. - I ship within 2 business days, if it will be longer I will contact you & explain. - I will NOT lie on customs forms, it's a felony, do not ask me to mark sales as "gifts". Free shipping applies to contiguous US states.

I love Corvus Pattern. I saved all the helmets and shoulders from my sprues and had enough to make an entire squad!

I wish they sold Corvus Pattern Marines NOS

Mattieu~~~~ It's not that eldar are bad, it's that they require a lot of intergration between units. Also, that doesnt prove anything other than GW has a huge hard-on for marines, and, given the option between making a xeno the best psykers or making a marine the best psyker, they will 9 times out of 10 choose the marine.

I also love corvus pattern.

My favorite is the metal Sternguard that has the Corvus head, as well as the studded calf plate, and a studded shoulder.

While they're at it they should sue Capcom for giving Megaman similar leg designs too! And I'm pretty sure his blue is pretty close to Ultramarines blue! And then they should sue Paul Verhoeven for making Starship Troopers, since that's about spacemen fighting bugs! And then they should sue the deceased Robert Heinlein for writing a book about guys in power armor fighting bugs!

And then they should sue all of us for contributing to this awful thread.

A new day, a new time zone.

I blame the OP for being gullible enough to swallow what a red shirt told him.

and quite a nice guy... as unbelievable as that is (prolly the only GW manager that I haven't secretly despised... there's just something horrible that can happen when a nerd is given authority).

He has a rather confused knowledge of how copyright works, then. Copyright applies to physical things. You can't 'copyright' a design.... you have the copyright if you created it, which stops people from copying it directly. It doesn't stop people from making things similar to it, though, so long as they are not too similar.

Designs fall more under the domain of Trademarks or Patents... although GW have done neither of those things with Space Marine legs.

GW didn't 'take down' Turn Signals. The creator closed it down because he couldn't afford to keep it going. The only input GW had into the whole thing was refusing him permission to publish the comic as a book.

The book probably would have given him the income to keep it going, it was just murder via proxy.
