when YOU feel it is complete lol. I am sure its different between people.

For me its when I have the ability to choose what ever upgrade or unit I wish and be able to field it on the table.
instead of using a Rhino for a predator for example. haha

You are not free whose liberty is won by the rigour of other, more righteous souls. Your are merely protected. Your freedom is parasitic, you suck the honourable man dry and offer nothing in return. You who have enjoyed freedom, who have done nothing to earn it, your time has come. This time you will stand alone and fight for yourselves. Now you will pay for your freedom in the currency of honest toil and human blood.

I agree with Gamza. I have anywhere from 6000-7000 points of orks and I'm not even close to being done. When I can field any single unit completely maxed out at any given time, then I will be done. WAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Someone should make an army of 1001 space marines.

the 1000 marine number apparently only takes into account of the individual Battle Brothers. It does not include the Librarium, Chaplains, Techmarines, Command Structure, and the Armoury (tank drivers mostly).

An army is never finished until you are. And by that I mean dead. I worked on my Plague Marines from 96-99, stopped for 11 years, started them back up again in November of this year, no end in sight. I'm still adding models to my Undead army that I started back in '94 or '95. In 2010 I added over 400 new Zombies. When I finished the last one I swore I was done, I'd never paint another model for my Undead. Then the new rules came out. I bought and painted another Corpse Cart.

It's never over. Divorce, unemployment, moving from state to state numerous times, lifestyle changes, passing of years... it is no matter. Your army is still there in the box, waiting.

Personally all my planned lists cap at 2,500, but I might end up with 3kish points of my armies. That way if I feel like changing up some parts of my lists I have the necessary gear and models to do so.

I also have 3 armies now and possibly more in the future.

I plan on building up my Necron army 'til I have a fully equipped Tomb World's worth of them. And since GW has never said what constitutes a full Tomb World I'm sort of left just constantly buying things. Ah well.

I'd say an army is done when you sell it off. And then when the new edition comes out and your old army is thousands of times better, you go out and rebuy it again with new awesome models! (cough *WFB empire* cough) Damn...

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Says an Ork player.

Six mistakes mankind keeps making century after century: Believing that personal gain is made by crushing others; Worrying about things that cannot be changed or corrected; Insisting that a thing is impossible because we cannot accomplish it; Refusing to set aside trivial preferences; Neglecting development and refinement of the mind; Attempting to compel others to believe and live as we do

For my Eldar, I have two of every HQ choice (except for Yriel, who I do not want), I can max out my quantities of each Elites choice to 30+, for Troops, I have over 40 Dire Avengers, over 60 Guardians, 30 Wraithguard, over 30 Rangers and about 40 jetbikes, I can max out my quantities of Swooping Hawks, Spiders and Vypers. In Heavy Support, I have 12 Wraithlords, 6 Walkers, 44 Dark Reapers, 4 Falcons, but no Fire Prisms or Weapon Batteries. As I want neither, that doesn't trouble me. I also have a Scorpion Super Heavy, a Cobra Super Heavy and a Phoenix.

I also have lots of OOP Harlequin Jetbikes, Assassin Droids and just generally old Eldar. I think I have bought everything I am planning except for a Titan, but, of course, you can never be sure.

When will my Chaos Space Marines be done?

1) When I have at least one of every available unit

2) When I have enough models to feild a large variety of units, like say a unit of Havocs with nothihng but rocket Launchers one game, and nothing but plasma guns the next.

I've pondered this question a lot. My IG are well north of 10,000pts, and I still dont' even own every unit in the codex!

I think there needs to be a difference between done and complete. An army is done when you stop working on it, be it a focused 1850-2500pt tournament army, or a sprawling 6000pt theme army.

A complete army is when you really can't add anything usable to your army. It's not quite the same as literally maxed out (where every option is available in maximum quantities), but where every unit entry has a full complement, major options are represented (predators with both TL-LC and AC, for example), and the only real gaps are in wargear or armament options.

For myself, I'll consider my IG "complete" when I can field six full strength platoons, one conscript platoon, maxed out heavy weapon squads, six veterans (although I'll no doubt have many more), enough chimeras to mount six veterans and a platoon, 10 Ogryn, 30 ratlings, 30 PBS (all of my DH/WH retinues will be switching over), 30 Stormtroopers (i already exceed this), 3 vendettas, 3 valks, 30 roughriders, 3 hellhounds, 9 sentinels, 9 Russes with at least three of each turret option and three of each of Hull flamer, hull heavy bolter, hull lascannon, las/plas, HB/plas, and triple heavy bolter, three of each artillery piece, 9 hydras, 3 manticores, 3 deathstrikes.

Amazingly, I'm not that far off. It gets hard painting minis that you know will probably never be used in a game.

30 is kind of a lot!

OT:

I think its done when you no longer feel the need to improve on it any more. I'm there with my Necrons, other than procrastinating on improving the paint standard which I'll even admit is probably never going to happen.

Mattieu~~~~ It's not that eldar are bad, it's that they require a lot of intergration between units. Also, that doesnt prove anything other than GW has a huge hard-on for marines, and, given the option between making a xeno the best psykers or making a marine the best psyker, they will 9 times out of 10 choose the marine.

...urrrr... I dunno

I stick with my limit of 2,000pts. So, of course, that means all three of my armies are about 80% complete.

I'm going with "never". That's not to say you won't reach a point where purchases become very infrequent, but it'd have to be a pretty amazing army for there to be nothing at all you'd want to grab - even if it's just for Apoc, or some sort of FW unit you want to mess with.

Iron Warriors - 4000 points (non-inflated, full FOC)
Black Crusade - 1500 points (non-inflated, led by Abaddon)
Jenen Ironclads (traitor IG/ABG) - 4000 points (non-inflated)
