So, I'm going to be magnetizing a lot of my marines, I've never done it before but I want to recess so you can't tell they're magnetized unless you take the arms off. My question is this: What size magnets should I be using for marine arms/torso, what is a good brand/cheap place to buy said magnets, and is there a quick way to recess them using only hand tools?

Best sizes to use are 1/16" and 1/8" discs, either 1/32" thick or 1/16" thick, depending on what you're magnetizing.

I've been a bit slow of late in getting instructions done, but will try to get a move on this weekend.

Basically, you want 1/16" for weapons, heads and shoulder pads. 1/8" for arms and backpacks.

I also have 1/16" and 1/8" drill bits and a basic pin vice if you don't already have one.

I'm confident that my prices are better than anyone else's and my shipping is cheaper too, especially for buyers outside the US.

For European users I recommend Supermagnete. They're stationed in Germany and have a very wide selection of magnets.

For SM arms, i'd use 3x1 or 2x1 mm.

I would deffinityly always go with gluing models due to the fact that not only does it save space it also is alot sterdier but yes you people that have not used magnets before yeah why not go experiment there great for things like razorback so that you can interchanged weaponry or titans all tanks and titans i own have magnetised weaponry and doors.

!. I use 2mmx1mm magnets for amrs myself.

2. Use a pin vice, drill a hole slightly deeper than your magnet is, slowly insert it until it is flush with the surface then use your drill bit and ever so gently prod and poke it until it's as recessed as you want, be careful though as if you d into somewhere holow, you may just lose your magnet if you press too hard with your drill bit.

For Magnetising Back packs, you can't really drill into the backpack hole itself, so just glue it as it is and just recess the magnet in the back a bit more, will fit snugly and won't be seen.

I've conditioned myself to ignore ads so I never noticed it. I don't want to sound like a shill, but considering I only needed a small number of tiny 1/16 x 1/32 discs, the magnets plus shipping where considerably cheaper than other places I looked. I was shocked by how much cheaper.

This is a strange comment. What takes up more space, 3 marines, one with a combi-melta, one with a combi-plasma and one with a combi-flamer, or one marine with 3 magnetized right arms with those options?

I agree gluing is sturdier (who wouldn't) but there are times when magnets are a great idea, saving space and money. I run Space Wolves, who have Wolf Guard. With a unit of them I like to play around with combi-weapon and power sword / fist / claw combinations. If I used glue, for a 10 man unit, I'd need 20 models at least to have the options I want. With magnets, I only need to 10 full guys and extra arms. Why duplicate the base, the legs, the torso, the head and the backpack when I don't need to?

@Stevkat: Sent you a PM re: your order, if you haven't seen it.

I live in the states, but I'm originally from the UK. One of my pet peeves is what a rip-off international shipping can be, which is why I keep mine really low.

Anyway, this isn't supposed to be the hard-sell, just want to make the point that I cater purely to 40K players and it's an extension of the hobby for me, not something I'm trying to get rich from.

If it's any help to non-US players, I will add the metric sizes and non-dollar pricing. Let me know if that's a good idea.

I've just started using magnets with my marines, I got mine from ebay in the UK im sure there will be a US seller, a few different sizes ordered for different models. I use either 3x1mm or 2x1mm depending on the arm or weapon in question. Also use larger magnets on tanks and dreds (4x1mm upto 10x1.5mm)

I've done some pics of my predator with magnets and dred in my thread below, also I went with your thinking with assault captain, interchangable weapon using magnets. I'll doing this to all my captians and elites from now on.

not to plug my thread, but take a look how I used my magnets.

What happened here? I got a hundred 3x1mm cylinderical magnets for the equivalent of 3$

But yes, I did buy a handful of others in order to reach the minimal ~11$ equivalent order minimum. I only really use the 3x1, 3x2 and 3x4 magnets, the rest only for tanks.

Well the world isn't going to take over its' self now is it? And what kind of achievement will that be without fashionable henchmen? Normally this wouldn't have been a problem, but I had all my fashion designers executed.
Should anyone help design a new flashy uniform, I just might spare you on the day of judgement. MUHAHAHA!

That is very useful. I have been wondering about magnets for a while, and while the basic idea I could get the hang of, I had no idea how to actually put them in the models.

I have recently been diagnosed with swelling in the brain, so please excuse spelling mistakes and faulty sentences. I am losing my ability to type and talk effectively, but dammit, that is not going to stop me from trying.

It's also where I get most of mine - not a secret, by any means.

However, because I effectively aggregate orders, my prices are as good as or better than K&J's and my shipping is cheaper.

I feel like I'm banging my head against the wall at times - I've checked every one of the suppliers people have mentioned in this thread and not one of them is cheaper.

Please, do me a favour, do yourself a favour, and do Dakka a favour: check the site!

If you're unsure how to compare sizes, currencies, etc, drop me a PM or email and I'll be happy to help. If there's a size you need, or a larger quantity, or an odd quantity, let me know!

And just to make things easier, I've dropped the extra dollar for non-US orders.

So that's $3, wherever you live. Which is approximately:

£1.90 or 2.25 euros
