So, lots of games do special editions.. I don't mean newer "game of the year" editions that come out a year later, but like a special box set that has the game, maybe an art book and some other collectable kinda things thrown in?

I got the Wacraft 3 special edition that came with a big art book and DVD with all of the cutscenes. And same for Star Wars Galaxies that came with a miniature that I told myself I would paint and never did. Most recently, last year I got the Special Edition for COD MW2 that came with a little art book and a code to download the original Call of Doodie with prettier graphics. It was only $10 more and I liked that it was the same size as the other game boxes so it could fit right on the shelf. Now I noticed there's a Killzone 3 SE that's like $130, it seems a little too over the top for me .. ginormous helgast helmet with an action figure stuffed inside and other stuff.

Do you buy just the normal game or do you like to get the special editions with all the extra goodies?

If I really want the game, I get it when it comes out.
But sometimes games I like don't get Game of the year, so...
I did get MW2's prestige thing. Can't say no to night vision.

Depends on what it comes with and if I can justify the money.

Got both Halo 3 Special(NOT Legendary) and ODST Special(I only had 2 controllers, so the extra cost was justified to me).

Everything else was regular edition.

That said, if there's a War for Cybertron 2 Special edition, it will be mine, regardless of what comes with it. Still disappointed that Hasbro dropped the ball and didn't do some sort of LE figure for the release of WfC like they did with Star Wars: Battlefront 2 years ago.

I'm hoping for a Borderlands 2 SE that comes with my very own claptrap.

Depends whats in the special edition box. If its just a fancy cover, I'll pass. I've found that the special edition in game items that come with every collector/special edition are usually replaced rather quickly, so aren't my main reason for purchasing. I like the physical loot that you get.

I bought the Warhammer: Age of Reckoning box because, A. I love warhammer. B. I bought into the hype on that game. C. The miniature that came with it was ok, but the art book was awesome. I still peruse that book for terrain/conversion ideas. The art department hit the ball out of the park with that game, imo. Everything else... I enjoyed for a time, but ...meh.

I bought the Fallout 3 Collectors edition because the Pipboy bobble head was, for some strange dorky reason, irresistable. I even bought the Fallout: New Vegas collectors set, and was kind of disappointed that no Vegas themed bobble head was in it( I could've swore I saw one). It still came with a cool deck of cards, with game artwork on it.

If they release any sort of collectors/special editions for DoW II: Retribution, the Ultramarine game and the 40k mmo, I'll probably purchase them if they have decent loot in their respective boxes, because I'm already into that whole IP.

I really wanted the New Vegas box because of the loot, but I don't ever want the game after hearing its basically an over-glorified expansion pack, and the whole game is running on the same game engine as FO3.

This is my take on it also. The Age of Reckoning artbooks have a prominent place on my shelf next to my Army Books

You should really look around, because Retribution is getting a collector's edition. And it is awesome.

Never, they are pish. Warhammer is my 'Collection' hobby. For me games are just entertainment if i enjoy them i play them more, i see no need for a masterchief posable action figure. I might be tempted to buy a special edition if it is in the preowned section for the same price as the regular. I would flick through the art book and never watch the dvd.

I normally only splurge on the special editions for games that have exceeded a certain hype threshold in my mind: Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, Bioshock, and Dragon Age.

I've passed otherwise, especially for the Halo games.

Suffolk, where the Aliens roam.

Depends on how much I like the game.

WoW I got Cataclysm Collectors Edition, annoyed I didn't get WotLK looking back and started three weeks before TBC so didn't even know if I'd like the game then.

I've also got the Halo Reach one with the diary, just as that interested me.

I got Warhammer Online Collector's as well, but sadly that turned out not such a great purchase due to my issues with the game.

So I don't get many, but if its a franchise I really like its possible. Will probably get the 40K MMO one, and the World of Darkness MMO Collectors Editions if they exist.

Also considering Mass Effect 3 if it has one, as I've really been enjoying the first game. As long as I enjoy the second game as much, its very likely.

I'd love to get the Dynasty Warriors 7 one, but Koei doesn't do it outside Japan, Boo hiss.

Only special addition I have ever bought was Gears of War 2. Was debating on getting Brutal Legend's, but I was unsure as to the quality of the game at the time ( )

It depends on what comes with the game (if it's actually going to be useful to me, I'll buy it).

For instance, I bought both the Tekken 5 and 6 special editions, because they both came with an arcade stick (one for PS2 and one for X-Box 360, respectively). That actually has a profound effect on the way you play the game, so it's worth the price of admission.

However, I'll pass over any special edition that simply has an art booklet or a cheap plastic figurine. That's generally worthless to me.

I got Halo Reach Collector's Edition, as it was 3 or 4 pounds more than the normal version.

I got Mass Effect 1 CE for 15 euro... Warhammer Online for 20.

The price seals the deal for me, there's usually not that much stuff that interests me.

If it's a really good game (like Halo), I'd buy it regardless. Though I loved Reach's extras, I also would have appreciated a making of DVD.

Considering how lackluster Halo 3's was, I'd say you didn't miss much.

I bought the Tomb Raider Anniversery Special Edition. It came in a neat box with a lengthy making of the TR series DVD, and the soundtrack for both Anniversery and Legend. I remember it not being too expensive, and consider it an excellent purchase.

It really depends on the game and what the extra contents are. I mostly do it for the art books and other oddities.

- HL2 came with a t-shirt and HL: Source
- Age of Empires III came in a nice large box and has a bitching sweet art book with art by Craig Mullins
- Guild Wars and it's expansions, all because of the sound tracks and really nice art books
- Saints Row 2 came with a golden bullet USB stick
- Fallout 3, because of the lunchbox and art book obviously!

I've also got a collection of steel book cases: Dawn of War II, Red Alert 3, S.T.A.L.K.E.R., Bioshock, Gears of War

Depends on what's in the box. I once bought the special edition of farcry 2, because the Special edition was cheaper then the normal one.

But I am considering to buy the special edition of Killzone 3, just because I am a huge Killzone fan.
