or artists that realy embody a period of GW heres some to start off...
I love the rest of the image, I just can't find it. But it's fairly awesome, truly showing the power of the Astartes, showing the banner of their power in front of a monster horde or Orks.

Every time I see this picture:
....I want to play Tyranids. Then I remember how they turned them into non-thinking locusts and lose the urge. Don't know who the artist was, probably Blanche...as it's from Hive War.
*Edit* Actually I think it's Gibbons looking at his other stuff, it looks like the same style.

The former creates the 'feeling' of the setting in visual form.
The latter is one of the best visualisers ever, for his hand in designing things like the look of Craftworld Eldar and their culture, to the same for Skaven, and laying it out in design in his sketchbook.
And even more impressive, getting it into 3D as a sculpt.

KARL KOPINSKI THE GOD. Couldn't find my favourite the one with the guardsman and Kasrkin at ease. I think this one is by him tho and it is one of my faves:

That nid pic is indeed Mark Gibbons. As you said, it alone (probably) was what got me started on nids, the very first army I played way back when I was 11/12. I remember spending hours trying to copy that with pencils, before realising that he used inks. Ahh, nostalgia.
I'm not a big buyer of art books, but I have a couple of Smith's books, as well as some Chronopia stuff I bought just because he graced it with his presence

Another one for Mark Gibbons. This fellow always seemed to understand Warhammer for me. His art really brings out the character of whatever he's drawn. Yes, it's almost cartoony, but Warhammer shouldn't take itself too seriously.
You know, I could look at his stuff all night. This is what Kroak should have looked like
