Subject: If GW made a new Space Marine army?
|
 |
Boom! Leman Russ Commander

So I've been thinking, besides updating existing armies or getting rid of some (Squats, Lost and The Damned, Kroot Mercenaries ) GW will occassionally throw a new army into the mix. Most recent of which was the Tau. Now I have seen threads about "If a new army was made what would you want?" and the big choice it seems would be a AdMech army. But none of these really bring up the idea of GW making another Space Marine codex.
Currently there are 5 Space Marine armies, these are the vanilla Space Marines, Black Templars, Blood Angels, Dark Angels and the Space Wolves (6 if you want to count the Grey Knights in the DH). So what do you think? if GW made another Space Marine army do you think it would be an already existing chapter (keep in mind there are PLENTY of chapters that could be represented outside of the vanilla marine codex) or would they make an entirely new chapter (please not the Blood Ravens!!!)?

I wouldn't like to see it, but it's always a possibility.
If they did go down that route, it would only really make sense if it was one of the more non-codex chapters.
White Scars and Iron Hands both have a significantly different organisation to a Codex chapter - White Scar bike army is an obvious one, but the Iron Hands might be a good way of creating an almost-AdMech SHOOTY space marine codex.
I suppose Relictors would be quite an interesting codex too.

I like Fafnir's suggestion, I think there would be plenty of mileage in that idea. But I would like to see a marine army based on either of the missing chapters that get mentioned in the Heresy books. The big stipulation being that they did not play in any way remotely like a marine army, perhaps in the type of weapons and vehicles used, squad make up. Neither would they be similar in any way to chaos.

Though Space Marines provide much of the foundation of the 40k world and the game, I think 6 Space Marine Codices are enough. As cool as it would be to have a codex for each founding chapter, its not necessary. Frankly, there should be only be one Space Marine codex with the ability to truly customize each force to represent the various chapters, but thats just me.
Part of me also thinks that Guard regiments should be distinctly flavourful as the Cadians and Catachans fight nothing alike, much like Blood Angels and Salamanders. Same goes for the various Eldar craftworlds, and Chaos legions/warbands.
But to answer your question, if they absolutely had to make a Space Marine codex, I would be all over a Salamanders Codex.

There are enough (ie too many) SM codexes already. Edit: Though to be mildly on topic, I can't really think of too many SM armies that fall outside the codexes that already exist. As has been mentioned, the bike army might be an exception, but do we really need an entire new book just so you can take a bike army? Why not just a special character in the main codex?

For those who are saying there are enough SM armies this is an IF question. And there are many many chapters that fall outside of the codex astartes and could be represented outside of codex Space Marines. This isn't just about those listed in the SM codex.

Completely agree.
However, as of now their are just too many codex's period. It really would be nice if we had a general codex in which you can plug and pay (like wargear) things that change your basic FOC, without SC's. So a force commander with a jump pack suddenly unlocks these units, etc.
You could do this for every race in 40k and add a gak load of options that would also be represented in the fluff and table top.

I gather that it is an "if" question, but I honestly can't see any need or reason for another SM codex. I can't think of any type of army that cannot be represented by the current codexes, or possibly the inclusion of a special character to let you take bikes as troops or something.
If there were yet another SM codex, I would like it to be something akin to a deathwatch/inquisition style codex, with rules for lots of specialist forces and marines, thus making it extremely different from the current SM codexes.

There are 7 marine codices, counting Chaos Space Marines. Truthfully, if they HAD to add another Space Marine codex, I would prefer to see Traitor Legions. The current C:CSM does a fine job of representing renegades, but it doesn't half do justice to the Traitoris Extremis.

I don't think that if (when?) GW introduces a new army, it will be a SM chapter. There's already plenty of them, and we don't need any more.
But, for the sake of argument, assume they are going to do one.
I'd prefer it to be White Scars. All bike army would be pretty cool (although would need to fight for design space with the Ravenwing).
But, I think GW would actually make Codex: Blood Crons. These are Necrons that saw how awesomely awesome Blood Angels are and decided they'd be just like them. So, they painted themselves red, went to Earth, and fixed the Golden Throne. In thanks, the Emperor revealed that the Nightbringer is actually a primarch and the Necrons are totally a lost Space Marine chapter. Their geneseed just makes them look like robots.

If it strictly has to be a Loyalist Book, Legion of the Damned. Personally they're one of the most interesting chapters to me, and have the most unique organisation (they haven none!)
If going for any marine book, then I agree with a Traitor Legion book, either specifically for one of the legions (Iron Warriors and Word Bearers get my vote, since they seem to have some really unique organsations and have alot of groundwork done already compared to the other two non-god-specific legions, and god-specific legions should be covered in the core CSM codex), or a supplimentary book like the Craftworld Eldar book.

Heck it's not even about if every Space Marine chapter can be represented with the Vanilla SM book. It's about if GW did make one would they make an entirely new chapter from scratch to represent or would they represent one of the other chapters that already exist.
And when I created this it's geared more towards representing a single loyal chapter so sorry guys no Legions

There actually are in fact 7 Space Marine armies (out of *16* total armies), Space Marines, Daemonhunters (Grey Knights), Dark Angels, Blood Angels, Space Wolves, Black Templars, Chaos Space Marines. 4 of these have no reason for their own codex. We don't need any more.
If we absolutely *HAD* to have another SM book, which we *really, really* don't, it would probably best be one for the the Chaos Legions, but really we just need one decent CSM book, just like we really only need one SM book and maybe one for the Daemonhunters/Grey Knights.

Chapter Traits was a really good concept. If they incorporated FnP, Counterattack and Acute Senses, and Special unit unlocks with Characters (like they have now) with Chapter Traits, (the first two being actual traits, while the character unlocks functioning as-is right now, but with generic characters with a certain set of equips) then we'd have no need for the other codexes. A few specialty units that are mixed in (that can be unlocked if you use a certain set of traits, like the Books of Chaos rules from before) could easily fill out the various specialty units from the other dexes. Only GKs deserve their own dexes as far as I'm concerned.

They should condense all the chapters into a single, massive codex that encourages you to build your own chapter a la the AMAZING 4th edition codex.
But they won't do that because it would probably be bad for business.

I love space marines I really do (I collect smurfs so go figure) but I'd really rather not see any new codices with new chapters. What I'd really like to see is a updated Dark Angels/Black Templars/Insert any other missed outdated codices combo. Just like they did in vanilla SM book, they could combine 3-4 different chapters, give them unique special rules and just forget about the damned SM for a few years.

I'd like to see the following marine books, AND NO OTHERS:
1. Codex Space Marines (Ultramarines, Blood Angels, Dark Angels, and all the other roughly-IA chapters)
2. Codex Crazy Marines (Space Wolves, Black Templars, and other non-IA chapters.)
3. Codex Inquisition (GKs, SoBs, Deathwatch, Inq)
4. Codex Chaos Warbands (Cult Legions, Black Legion, Recent Renegades, Daemons)
5. Codex Chaos Legions (Non-cult Legions, Dark Mechanicus, Traitor IG / Cultists, Daemons)
Yeah, they'd be somewhat bigger books since you'd have to include more fluff and a few chapter/legion-specific units - but the truth is, there is a TON of overlap between the current codexes, and most of this could be eliminated. And, even better, you'd stop having so many Chapters and Legions that were different only because they had the misfortune of coming out a little earlier or later than others.

This made me laugh pretty hard. On topic, I would enjoy seeing them make a tech-marine based army giving all vehicle options to the codex that exist in imperial armies (excluding the jealously guarded Baal Predators) and basic 1-wound tech marines can be bought as upgrades to vehicles to attempt repairs. Army would be led by Masters of the forge, Dreadnaughts could be taken as troops for each unit of a techmarine/servitors taken. I'd get in on it
Maybe I'll make my own...since I don't like the way my friends OPed tech marine fandex runs-way too broken

Lol Crazy Marines. A few Chapter Traits should be able to make them unique enough without needing a whole new book. Chaos Warbands and Chaos Legions can also be merged with the return of Legion rules. They had a good system back in 4th edition, but the money-grubbing part of GW took over and are now making us pay out the ass for every little change.

Yeah the game pretty much doesn't need another marine codex. I think almost 50% of all the books out there is more than enough when they're being laughably 'justified' by such ludicrously slim margins of difference from each other.

My current theory, (other than Matt Ward being a numpty) is that they received such little love in C: SM 5th edition because they've got Codex: Iron Hands on the drawing board somewhere. They do depart fomr the Codex Astartes in some significant ways. I'd personally like to see some new Dreadnought variants and special characters, Sergeants in Terminator armor, worthwhile servitors and Techmarines, all Rhino chassis vehicles get the Repair rule, experimental weapons from the AdMech, more Conversion Beamers... I could go on. I don;t think White Scars need one, though. They can be done fairly well with C: SM. Just add Storm Ravens in Heavy Support, and have Kor'Saro Khan give Hit & Run instead of Outflank.
