So our local store carries a TON of boardgames. They buy used ones too and recently two older games came in that caught my attention.
The first is Heroquest. I'm sure you've heard of it- prob played it long ago- did you know that many of the enemies in the game seem to be Warhammer fantasy based? There are mentions of Chaos Warriors and the "Old World" which leads me to believe GW may have had a hand in this. However, the game says it is from Milton Bradley.
The second game coupled Judge Dread and what looks like the mean streets of a 40k Hive. You know the guy- "I am the law!" The box even had the Warhammer 40k logo on it. Which got me thinking- is Judge Dread an Imperial Judge from 40k? Trying to recall the movie (it has been a long while) I do recall it being very hypertech-Sci Fi. Heck, Dread similar to concept art of Imperial Arbites Judges.
Just wondering if people could shed some light on this interesting find.

GW and Milton Bradley made a few games together. Heroquest, Space Crusade and Battlemasters.

Judge Dread and 40K aren't connected except that GW did make some minis and games for it a long time ago.

HeroQuest was produced in conjuction with GW, and is set in the Fantasy Universe. You may have noticed a large map of the Old World on the back of the box. It's essentially a RPG-Boardgame.
The Second game was probably Necromunda (although I don't recall it ever coming in a box, are you sure it wasn't the rulebook?), a specialist game by Games Workshop. Players take control of a gang of Hivers deep within the bowels of an Imperial Hive, or can choose to play as an Arbites strike team sent to cleanse the scum from the walls and gratings of the underhive (which is likely what you saw). The game is skirmish based, but campaigns involve gang experience, territory capture, loot and an expanding gang.

That is interesting that GW worked in conjunction with MB. I wonder why they don't do this more often- you'd think GW would like a hand at becoming more- mainstream.
Oh, I know what Necromunda is. Good times! =) This was certainly Judge Dread and 40k- together! Here is a little something I found on it. It is called Citi Block.

It would have been judge dread the board game produced by games workshop back in the day, they sold it and had the rights to produce minis and merchandise etc like they did with lotr. Heroquest is set in warhammer old world.
edit oh city block they also published or sold a fair few others like chainsaw warrior, traveller, dungeonquest etc.. back then the only Intelectual property they had was warhammer, fantasy roleplay i think?

I have Warhammer Quest. Pretty amazing game but never play. No one to play with!! Anyway there is a massive book in it which has all the stats to add any warhammer mini. So cool. GW should have stuck with it considering how much you can expand the game.

Oh man, Hero Quest and Judge Dredd (there's no 'a' in there) - I still have the former and its expansions hidden somewhere in my mum's ex's house, and the latter's an absolute classic of a comic series.
Indeed, if you look at the British comics scene, specifically 2000 AD's output, and you can see that 40k shares most of its satirical humour with it. It's in the dark, dystopian futures that are populated with completely hateful, over-serious characters with completely mental ideas about justice who we root for nonetheless, enjoying them for their absurd perspectives and utter seriousness. And, of course, their oversized shoulderpads

Absolutely, and it's no secret that many of the designers of 40k (chief among them Rick Priestly) were big 2000AD fans, and some of that type of humour was translated into 40k. Dan Abnett was also a writer for 2000AD, and while his books don't have that humour, he has helped shape and reinforce 40k as being a dystopian version of the future which shares similar sensibilities to the Dredd fantasy universe.
Have to say the satire and humour in the mag is the same reason I still pick it up the odd copy nowadays, in the same way as something like the Simpsons, it has those different elements which can appeal to both children and adults. Pleased to hear there is a new version of the movie in the works as well, after the poor effort that was the Stallone vehicle!

Ahh the Judge Dredd boardgame. I still have it somewhere in the loft I'm sure. The great thing was you had a perp card and a crime card which you had to defeat. Judge Death for Littering was a personal favourite funny moment.

Citi-Block is/was one of the best sets of sci-fi floorplans about IMHO.
It includes rules for making citi-blicks for the GW Judge Dredd RPG and rules for creating gangs and hives for RT WH40K.
Get it it is a great product even after all of these years.

I still have mine.
It was an accessory for the Judge Dredd rpg at the time (made by GW under licence from Fleetway ) and had a couple of pages of notes in it for conversion to using it in 40k games.
A second set of mapsheets was released with the JD expansion "Slaughter Margin".

The Judge Dredd thing is a set of floorplans for the Judge Dredd RPG that GW released. They did three games, a 'Judge Dredd' board game (quite enjoyable and easy), a 'Block Mania' game that was about two city blocks in the Dredd universe having a huge riot, and there was the proper RPG for which various supplements were released. If you like floorplans, this item is fair generic I would have though.
Heroquest is just Heroquest, it's simply fun for what it is. Lots of value especially for younger players. Many people here will have played it.

Interestingly, there's a new Dredd movie planned for release in 2012, as with many other films, this is going to be a reboot rather than a follow on to Stallone's sometimes dodgy attempt. Karl Urban is the man behind the helmet and is rumored to be against showing his face in true Joe Dredd fashion...
Hard to tell from this, but I'm hopeful of a good movie of one of my favourite comic book characters. Let's hope the movie isn't 'Drokk 'or 'Grud', I'm sure it'll be 'Zarjaz' !!
I think Wargames Foundry (or are they just Foundry now?) still have a range of licensed 2000AD figs, including the mighty Judge his-self, maybe with the movie release we'll see some more shrewd sculptors create their own (totally non-related) figures as well. Would love a Chopper on skyboard like Citadel made so many years ago...

My wife loves the game and wants a copy, but Im unwilling to drop $100 or more for it. Now if GW did a rehash and release like the did with Space Hulk Id be on it. Id really like to see them do that with more of their "specialist" games. I think they vastly underestimate how well a new Necromunda would do.

An interesting find indeed.
Not to play runner-up, but here are a few sites for you if you are interested. Granted, my hate on is still fresh for Mongoose, but that doesn't mean that I wouldn't hide it from someone else who might be interested. But for warned is fore armed, Mongoose is notorious for pulling the rug out from under you if you get into thier gaming.
GW used the Judges concept as a basis for Arbites, They have some of them out there that they painted, and have pictures of that were done by Mike McVey in the old painting guide.
Judge Dread is being revamped as a miniature game by Mongoose, and there is talk of new figures on the way.
Now to the meat...
Here is the link for Mongoose, and thier Judge Dredd stuff. They've been at it for a while, pulled the game, and then rereleaseed it in it's entirity, Online, for free.
Here also is the link to thier forums, where you can get some info on the backstory behind the other game.

I've put in a link to E bay, which has a S@#$ ton of Heroquest stuff. All in all, basicly this is Warhammerquest, but they had a few more rules and other stuff in there, It was a prequal to the GW boxed sets, and I wish you all well in your own "Quest, if you are so inclined.
http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_npmv=3&_trksid=p3910.m570.l1313&_nkw=Heroquest&_sacat=See-All-Categories
I loved this game, back in the day, almost as much as the old school MB battle games, ( Axis and llies, Fortress America, Shogun, etc.)
As for Judge Dread, Mongoose has gone the route of putting the rules up for free online, and then going back and revamping the miniature line. Of course they have them in there from the Blockwar game, but there is a focus( for now) buy them to increase and bring in some other stuff. Like I said, I don't like Mongoose, but here you are for interest's sake.
I remember the old GW game, but the minis wern't that good, Game was ok, but not one of thier biggies. You can still find a few here and there, but when Foundary took them over, they wen't to a whole new level of cool.
They're now called Foundary Miniatures, and the've had them for quite some time. Heres the link for Foundary.
http://wargamesfoundry.com/fantasy_ranges/single_packs/futuristic/2000ad/judge_dredd_ad001/
Good find, by the way.

Block Mania had an expansion called Mega Mania, which added two more blocks. You could attack the blocks on either side, or run across the middle to have a go at the one opposite, risking fire from all angles.
If you bought two Mega Manias, and did a bit of retouching, you could have a six way block war!
Those games and the JD boardgame were simple, fun and well thought out.
The Judge Dredd RPG wasn't that good, the rules were a bit crappy, but it was fun nonetheless playing a Megacity judge.
