The Beta for retribution is now available from STEAM.

I'm downloading it now, and later today should be able to give a nod on it.

Link over at Steam, when you log in.

Haven't seen a thread on it, but if there is one, you can disregard. I'll post more about it after a game or two.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

I pre-ordered a while ago so I've been playing all month. The Guard are absolutely awesome. However, there was a thread, but nobody's posted in it for a good couple weeks:

I was so disappointed in the portrayal of the inquisitor. She seems too weak.

Heres hoping the campain shows her differently.

Oh, you would love the 'sync' kills if you want some fanservice then.

The Stormtroopers have one wherein they bumrush an opposing target, knock it down, and then put rounds into the target's head while it's down on the ground.
The Commissar, depending on his weapon/enemy:
Power Sword->will break an opposing hero/infantry unit's melee weapon and then slam his sword into their chest. Against ranged units, he'll cut through their weapon and then kick them down and execute them.
Power Fist->Can do one of three things. Inserts fist into chest cavity and pulverizes them that way, -grasps the enemy's weapon and snaps it with his hand-, or can grab an enemy's head and squeeze.

He can get a set of armour that gives him an ability called "Inspire Terror" which allows him to perform the ranged 'execute' on any enemy unit--causing that unit to break and rally surrounding Guardsmen.

Ogryn have a pretty funny sync kill wherein the Bone 'Ead well...he uses his head

Lord General really has no unique sync kill, but his cronies do. You'll occasionally see him step aside from making a killing blow and 'delegate' it to the Command Squad's Commissar or Veteran Sergeant.

The Inquisitor though...her sync kills can be downright nasty. Ranging from setting someone's head on fire...through their mouth...to pinning them to the ground with a stake, it's glorious

What's steam? Is this something anyone can download or do you have to be a member of some club?

Steam is Valve's games distribution system. Google for it (I can't, as I'm at work) and you can install it and it has a mini-browser which lets you buy games directly online.

The nice thing is that -in general- Valve gets online distribution and the other companies that sell through them usually do as well. There's none of this "Only 5 installs per purchase" BS. You buy a game, you can install it, even on multiple machines, although you can only run it on one at a time generally. They even have services to allow your saved games to be stored on their Cloud so they're available anywhere you want. Also, they allow some pre-loading, so if DOW: Retribution came out tonight at Midnight you could conceivably start downloading it right now and play as soon as it 'goes live.'

Valve did a great job with Steam, and I've completely forgiven them for the Mac Half-Life annoyance. (Plus they're supporting Macs now!)

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.
Play the games that make you happy.

Would be nice if they actually got the multiplayer to more of a "War' or a "Battle" with this expansion, as it stands it barely amounts to a kill team... of too many objectives.

Yeah, I hate objectives that force you into making tactical decisions like using cover, chokepoints, and your head to think things out. I want to just build a hundred Marines and have them run out in the open at my enemy's base while he does the same for an hour and a half.

Honestly, if you want to do annihilation, just choose "custom games" or whatever - it's one of the options the game has. I find it tremendously boring compared to objective games, but whatever floats your boat.

I wouldn't call three leman russ tanks and a baneblade "barely amounts to a kill team"....

I downloaded it and it is as glitchy as hell.

I know my comp can run it, but there is no reason for the units not showing up and serious graphic errors in the characters.

That sounds like a problem with your graphics card, since only a few people I've seen (namely you and one other guy on another forum) are having that problem. That's not "glitchy as hell" that's just you not updating your drivers.

I just played a bit of Space Marines tonight - playing as Force Commander Baldy McScowl instead of Vanilla Ice. It was fun playing Marines again, but the Guard are a blast.

Also, for anyone asking:
This game is stand alone, does not require any other Dawn of War games to play, lets you play all races in multiplayer, has campaigns for all races, and ditched Games For Windows Live while keeping Steam.

In other words, spend the 30 bucks and get this awesome game.

My drivers are fully up to date. No change.

Considering my PC runs every game on the highest settings without any effort I am a little concerned.

Not in the DoW product, but my graphics card. It's never done that before.

Ok, I've played a few games on it and have really enjoyed it.

The game is available now in Beta, and comes out in the stores in March. You can download and buy the other races on STEAM, or if you already have the other games, get the Beta as a download option. A few months ago, I bought my DOW 2 stuff and it wouldn't run where I was playing. After I got home, I put the thing into my home computer and it ran fine, after I got the accounts set up and the game installed. STEAM is a gaming platform from Relic entertainment, and the only way I can describe it is that the company has the games, you download the games from your CD that you buy the games on, and they put the games in an account that you put together that gives them the centeralized location for the games. You get downloads, a place to get online opponents, and everything else and the compnay is like a middle man for playing games with. The concept to me is personally stupid, but WTF, I've got the games, so I have to suck that one up.

The steam account has the download option for the Beta and I downloaded it. I haven't had any issues with my graphics card, but then again, I've got a pretty High speed computer, so I didn't have any issues, I put in the other two games, and the steam account keeps them updated with patches and stuff. I've not played a lot of DOW2, but from what I've seen from the Retribution, I really like the game. There are a few of the holdovers from DOW, but it isn't the same kind of game. Now, you crank out units, but then you have to actually use tactics, and upgrade like a mofo to stay alive. The inquisitor is a badass and you need to keep her up close and personal, while supporting her with Grunts. The straight leg infantry have some good options, not the least is the tarantuala option. You get hold of a chokepoint, and set up a few of these bad boys, and the worm definatly turns. The game is different in tactics, and the lowly guardsman is the basis of the fight. You can't hold up against an onslought with one squad, so you have to continue to crank units out, and take and hold objectives at the same time. When you get in, it isn't important about what you do first, its what you do to keep objectives. From setting up the ambushes, to setting up traps, to running in and killing enemies, the game is no holds barred, RUTHLESS.
If you are a timid, sit back, build up kind of a guy, you are going to get run over. You have to be on the go, almost from the get go, and when you take over an objective, you have to just as quickly upgrade your units, and continue to crank out more, because the other guy is going to move in on you if you give them the space to.

My advice is to double up the squads, and keep that inquisitor behind them until you get stuck in, then push her ass into the fight, and watch her do the killing. A bunch of the other options are available as you move on, but not the least of which are super heavy tanks, the tank shock, and the heavy weapons squads.

As in a game of table top 40K, the tanks are a little bit of a bullet magnet, but they have some serious firepower, and they wipe people out, but you need to screen them with some infantry guys to give you a stopgap against those pesky attackers.

The game plays quick and dirty, and I have to say, it's pretty cool to set up an ambush, and watch tools run into it, then run off. ( You have to be careful though, because they withdraw, run around behind you and try to hit the ambush site from another direction, or the guys call in reinforcements, and set it off on you.) The AI for the game is pretty ruthless, and the units take a little bit of an effort to upgrade. I'm not a big fan of that, and the other deal about being only able to pop out of the fort. I all in all like the game for some of the new reason then the old game, but THIS game isn't the DOW 1. It is completly different, and if you get in, you are playing a game that moves quite differently as well.

The game makes you take care of your units a bit more, as well. They start out squshy, and as the goals are taken,( and held), you get more resources to buy more upgrades. All the while, your enemies are doing the same thing.

As for drivers, If you have a reletivly good computer, you shouldn't have an issue, if you have one thats a bit older, though, this game is so detailed that it is going to hem and haw you up to the point of unplayable.

I've only played the inquistor so far, but the other options of the commisar lord, and the IG commander have different specializations The inquisitor is an attack beast, the Commisar lord, a support and upgrade assistant, and the commander is a defense player.
Depending on your style of play, is how these guys pair up against an opponent.

The game is open to anyone who can download from steam, and it goes on until March.

As for the choices of game, You can run different scenarios and different types of game, but the thing you are thinking of is not this type of game.

This isn't DOW, anymore. It's build up and upgrade your units, and keep them alive. ( Resource management is more important in this game then DOW.)

The Inquisitor shouldn't be in the mass of units as she has paper-thin armour and her only useful shield is the mandate (as the other drains her power). She needs to be kept behind the men on ranged to survive.

Its the commissar; whom starts with a bubble and can wade into the enemy; and tank like a real beast, dishing out DPS while being unable to die unless his inf support is dead due to a wargear; thats the real badass.

Considering it IS DAWN OF WAR II then yes, it is the "bull crap" that they pulled with Dawn of War II.
And just because it isn't something familiar to you doesn't make it "bull crap" - it's simply a completely different animal. A much more tactical and less spammy animal that relies on cover, suppression, and things that keep it from being a boring slog.

It doesn't play like the original. You get basicly a 2000 pt army of guys and keep them alive while you upgrade thier stuff. You don't have as large an area as the old game, and the enemies are in the same boat you are. You have to actually use tactics and resource management to win. With the IG, ambush set ups, traps and free fire zones area must. IG are pretty squishy as opposed to the Orks, or the other guys you fight. I honestly just started playing the DOW games, but I've really grown fond of the IG.
