First official GW store in Poland. Better late than never I guess, though much will depend on the amount of space they'll offer for games/converting/painting/stuff...

What happened to the stores in Japan, did they tank or are they still there?

I heard years ago that there was talk of opening some stores in Korea, but nothing ever seemed to materialise.

In China and Japan, people pays a very high premium for space. How do you expect people to have a 4' x 6' table at home?

Thats a good point. But in a lot of Northern asia they seem to have 'rooms' for everything (playing PC games, pool etc.) operated like shops, and vertical space is utilised much more effectively than in most parts of the west when you have a shop on the ground floor and that's it. If it took off, I think the potential existed for 'playing' rooms to open, out of a town centre where property rates are far lower than in the west and you still have a massive population density which would increase numbers.

Not that it will happen, as I think GW in particular has got the blinkers on in terms of business expansion, instead choosing to corkscrew into ever tighter circles, but I think think the potential would be there if they chose to do so.

They're talking with a local agency about opening the SH store in either Lujiazui near the IFC mall or somewhere in Puxi (probably one of the new Huaihai rd developments). There's been a huge number of new shopping malls built (and still more being built) in these districts over the past two years. I'm sure that space + rent won't be too difficult. Shanghai kids are spoiled rotten, they shouldn't have difficulty coughing up money for little metal toys

My local GW is still up and running. I think. I actually haven't been back there in months since I stopped seeing people actually playing games there.

I know this is true of urban Japan and I'd heard this is true of places in Shanghai (with rents like doubling in a couple years) but is this true of China as a whole?

Not really. Just the large cities I think. Not sure on how Beijing is doing but I had heard on the news they are putting some really strict controls in place to stop the rich from buying multiple properties and pricing the poor out of the market. Here in Shanghai it's about 20,000 to 30,000 yuan a square metre. Double that for business rentings in a popular area (think LuJiaZui or People Square).

Now running a store in LuJiaZui is something I would love to do...I have experience in all the game systems they have with the exception of BFG but I think the wife would be less than thrilled.

This

The west I feel must learn how to utilise space more efficiently if they want to make an effective transition, GW included.
