What's your opinion of the cheapest (Preferably free) way to keep your models out of the dust?

Never take them out of their blisters or boxes (never buying them is best).
If you have to have them though keep them in a cabinet, box, gaming case or anything to keep them out of dusts or other harms way.
I currently use catfood pouch boxes if I am painting, just to keep them out of the way. I can get around 25-30 figures bases to base in one of those.
Are you looking at more long term storage? And what dust are we talking about here?

Well depends on how you want them.
As display pieces that sit on shelves and such then you could probly order glass boxes to sit them in so only glass will need to be cleaned.
If they arnt for display then any form of box tends to work, like the GW carry cases.

Just buy some of these...available at any Walmart or craft/hardware store...
Cost about $3.00 to $5.00 dollars apiece and each can hold about 30-40 minis.

Im buying 2 of these next week, for $60 each you cant beat it.

Though thats for my better quality/display stuff. My rank and file table top stuff is just going in boxes and getting put in the games closet.

I simply keep them in drawers, but when I get more armies than I know what to do with, I'll probably buy a glass cabnet something like that.

You'll both want to be aware that I will be writing a tutorial for how I modified two Detolf cases this week for use displaying miniatures. You'll be blown away.
Actually, I think many dakkaites will head straight to ikea after reading my tutorial. I'll take a few more pictures, then start writing it up.

I used to always keep my models out on shelves so all my non-nerd friends could laugh at me when they came to visit. But, I hated the dust :( eventually I invested in the sabol army transport cases a few years back (before battlefoam was around) so now I just store all of my models in trays. My local store sells the trays in all different thickness so I just grab one here and there as I buy models. So, yeah store them in bags and/or empty trays but if you want them on display, then save up and invest in some glass cabinets so you can keep them behind closed doors and away from the dust.

Yeah, I sure did!
-each case has 7 shelves rather than 3
-lighting has been installed (and not the way you'll normally see it done, better imo)
-the cabinet gaps have been dust proofed
-all wires concealed, one button lights both cases
The shelves can be adjusted for height later if you aquire a titen , i.e no welding involved. Anyway, I just finished the second case...I'll post the tutorial tomorrow, time permitting.

Sounds interesting, Id like to see it, especially the lighting. Dont think Ill need more shelves, most of the stuff Ill be displaying will be larger things like vehicles and my 28mm Battletech/larger walker collection. Other than a few select minis most of my small ones will be in boxes in the closet or in my curio cabinets on the wall.

I haven't tried using this on my WH minis since they aren't dusty at all, but I have used them on my MW Dark Age minis and it works like a charm! Stuff is cheap too, bought a couple cans of it for like $8. You can probably find it at any electronics store, I got mine from The Source (Formerly by Circuit City, formerly Radio Shack) It's REALLY good at getting all those tiny statically clung particles... just place the mini in the middle, fold over, gently squeeze and voila, no more dust on the mini... I'm not sure if it's harmful to paint but I haven't seen any sort of degradation on my DarkAge minis after several uses.
It's called Cyberclean, either google/youtube it yourself or just click the link

I know Lunahound uses a glass cabinet. I personally like looking at my minis because it inspires me, so shelving works for me. Dust has never been a problem, but I guess it depends on where you live.
If you want them on display, yeah, glass cabinet (but of course having to open it and close it all the time just to get your minis without breaking the door ever can be a pain I would think).
If you don't want them on display, store them in boxes. You can stack these to the ceiling if you want. Label them on the side so you know what is where. You can make dividers for these boxes if you want so the models are separated from one another. Simple cereal box cardboard is fine for this. Or you can buy boxes made for the task, obviously.
If you have a small army, I wouldn't worry. Although I guess I can admire your drive to plan ahead. You must be planning on buying LOTS.
I guess the next question - are you really planning just storage or are you planning a gameroom? Because if we are talking about a dedicated gameroom you almost certainly want your minis to be accessible. And furniture placement is important - since the table AND the models both have to be accessible.
Also by the way, regarding your choice to go with Orks... YOU MADE THE RIGHT CHOICE, MATE! WAAGGHHH!!!
