Hacker group Anonymous appears to have singled out its next target - the controvesial anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church in the US.

An open letter, purporting to be from Anonymous, accused the church of bigotry and fanaticism.

It warned that Westboro's websites would be attacked if the congregation did not stop its public protests.

In a defiant response, the church said it would not be silenced, and urged Anonymous to "bring it".

Westboro Baptist Church has been widely condemned for its aggressive anti-gay campaigning.

A number of US states have passed legislation, banning Westboro's members from protesting close to military funerals.

The church's leader, pastor Fred Phelps, was banned from entering the UK by the Home Office in 2009.

I still find it funny when people describe anonymous as an organised group. Still, this is one target that a lot of them would love to see attacked.

"Freedom of speech, that's some mother******* bs."

As an American said on Radio 4's Question Time at the weekend, human rights are never so important as when we are looking at people we hate and despise.

Vile, hateful bigots though Westboro clearly are, they have the right to express their views and Anonymous do not have the right to shut down their scummy websites.

Although it is much easier to destroy than to build, I would ask Anonymous to do something constructive about the Westboro situation. For example, issue a call to arms to get supporters of the armed forces, gays and so on to turn up to funerals and block out the Westboro hags.

These bikers have the right idea.

I'm all for freedom of speech.
However, freedom of speech apparently doesn't apply if I have a cussword on my t-shirt, according to some coppers. It shouldn't apply for people actively trying to disrupt a military funeral with hateful signs and speeches.

Anonymous have refused the bait and issued a 'sorry you're not worth it' letter.

They recognise it's a trap set by WBC to try and find some IPs to sue.

Dunno, I thought their peaceful protests against Scientology was a great way to do this.

Then you're not all for freedom of speech, only for freedom of speech with which you happen to agree.

That is the diametric opposite of the core principle.

Also, from wikipedia:

The Westboro Baptist Church believes that Barack Obama is the Antichrist, and that he forms an Unholy Trinity with Satan and Pope Benedict XVI, who they believe is the False Prophet.

And they even sourced it. I mean wow.

To question the thread title dont we also 'all agree' that Scientology as currently managed is abhorent.

Anonymous is not there to destroy scientology after all, just to shut down its more questionable practices.

Interestingly enough, in the link that MGS posted it mentions

"... and the short-on-money, thrive-on-attention WBC was in fact behind the first Open Letter supposedly from Anonymous.."

Do I take it then that WBC are slowly litigating themselves out of existence? Or is it a bit or an exaggeration?

Is it just me, or does anyone else think that Anon should have done this sooner?

Seriously, I think we can all agree that the Internet Hate Machine has aimed its raeg at something that should, nay, needs to be destroyed.

But you can't stop their speaking. Not and have freedom of speech.

The thread of Anonymous to shut down Westboro web sites is the modern equivalent of burning books and beating up protestors.

I think that Westboro is skating the thin line between harassment and free speech. Pretty much the same thing Anonymous did with Scientology.

But that doesn't give Anonymous the right to engage in vigilantism against WBC.

Anonymous is generally a bunch of loser basement dwelling know-nothing script kiddies who act important.

They have, admittedly, done one good thing, and that is to save a cat.

Just because you don't want to take a case to the Supreme Court, it doesn't mean Westboro haven't got rights to freedom of speech.
