Okay seriously...why did people hate this movie? I just finished watching it and thought it was great. Heck I thought it was waaaay better than Battlefield L.A.

Has anyone else seen it? I thought the ending had a a nice touch that I haven't seen done in a movie before.

For those that have seen it, comment on the spoiler:

Spoiler:
Man the main guy took over the body of one of the aliens! His brain was special somehow. Seems like he got superpowers from previously being affected by the aliens. I hope he ends up taking over one of the big ships in the sequel!

LOL... this thread again IN REVERSE!

Seriously, if you are old enough to have seen Independence Day (ID4) you have already seen Skyline and Battlefield LA.

Old enough? Let me tell you something. ID4 was my first date with my girlfriend who is now my wife. That's right ol' Will Smith and his movie was my first date with Mrs. Scythican. I was 16 and she was 19. Best day of my life.

I happen to like Alien Invader movies quite a bit. I hope I see at least 20 more before I die.

But grats on the successful date-turned-marriage.

Oh, sorry my bad. Thanks for the congrats. We broke out ID4 last night for movie/date night. I need to find some more Alien Movies. Anyone got some suggestions? Also if you want to be spoiled or have seen it, check out the spoiler below. It has some screen caps of the ending and a little discussion, don't open if you plan on watching it and haven't seen it yet:

Spoiler:
taking over the body of one of the aliens had a comic book feel to it. I think people are looking into it, wanting something different. I have read that people didn't like District 9 for the same reasons. As for taking the brain being slowed, well I would like to think the human brain is worth a lot more to an alien than us. They can probably do more with it, (the whole we can only access 10% of our brain's power sort of thing.

But like I said, it had a comic book hero feel to it. I can see the main guy taking over half the alien fleet eventually and fighting back. The picture at the end were accompanied by some kick dyi music. Check out the next spoiler pics of the guy beating up aliens as an alien and the saving his girlfriend

I heard it was bad too, but I liked it.

Think Cloverfield without the shaky cam. Comicbook type ending. It only had a 10 million dollar budget though so don't be too hard on it.

The idea that aliens would invest the amount of energy necessary to facilitate interstellar invasion for something like a human brain is pretty nonsensical.

We were discussing the recipie for success of alien invasion movies in relation to Battle LA last week in the DCM forum.

Skyline, cinematically is brilliant.
Special effects brilliant.
Characters believable.
Alien invasion epic.
Fightback by military awesome.

But....

Why should I invest any emotional attachment, no, interest in characters or a story when it becomes apparent half way through that the aliens are...
Spoiler:
unkillable.

Probably the stupidist move for an alien invasion movie (well funded one anyway) for a long, long time.
It is a long slow waste of time watching them get picked off because...
Spoiler:
you know without a doubt that there is no hope of anyone surviving.

Pathetic.

Battle LA is infinitely better (despite marines crying tears that are not made of a mixture of blood and awesomesauce) because we know that even if everyone dies.
Spoiler:
someone, somewhere will survive

And the ending was rubbish.
What chance does he have...
Spoiler:
1 unkillable alien body with a human brain trying to protect a pregnant human on an unkillable alien ship full of unkillable aliens

Sounds like a great 2nd movie concept doesn't it?
Not.
I thought the end took the twist it did because there was a video game tie in.

Spoiler:
I don't know...I find the notion of a no win scenario refreshing. Why is it that we always "win" against a vastly superior race of beings? Its the equivalent of a tribe of people with spears taking out the entire marine corp.

Spoiler:
As far as human brains being the reason for the invasion...hell the body snatchers were not too different. But I am sure there will be an argument there. Who knows maybe the Stem Cells are better for aliens? Maybe that is why they could regenerate easily? Zombies might be on to something...

But in the end it doesn't matter if you liked it or not. There are plenty of movies out there for everyone. Anyone care to argue with me about some others? I thought Gigli was horrible, and so was Gods & Generals. Rocky Horror Picture Show, 2001: A space odyssey, and Every Adam Sandler movie except Little Nicky are pretty bad as well.

This movie stars Eric Balfour. I don't have a solid reason why, but every time I see that guy, I want to punch him. Or, failing him, someone nearby.

If I were to watch a movie with him in a starring roll, I'll go on a rampage half way through the movie.

Everyone is in agreement about Gigli, it was terrible.
Gods and Generals was ok, but you've got to be a civil war fan to really enjoy it.
Rocky Horror is something I never quite understood. It was weird, and I didn't care for it. Although, a few songs are really catchy.

As for Adam Sandler. Yes, most of his movies were absolutely terrible. But, Billy Madison was decent, and both Happy Gilmore and The Wedding Singer were really good. And, Funny People, although not as funny as the name suggests, was really well done. Little Nicky was absolutely terrible. I'll assume you're confusing it with Happy Gilmore.

Star Wars isn't exactly a horror film either; if it was, then no amount of plot armour would have saved Lando.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

Thing is, I didn't like Rocky Horror either, but that's because it's aiming for something I didn't care for. For people who like that kind of thing it seems to work rather well.

You're welcome to say you don't care for 2001, but you're simply wrong to say it's a bad movie. It's regularly held up as one of the best examples of the craft of film making, the technical excellence is that high. You probably don't like it because it focusses on theme over narrative, which a lot of people struggle to get their heads around, but that doesn't make it any less of a brilliantly constructed movie.

There are good Adam Sandler movies, Happy Gilmore has about as many hilarious, quotable lines as any film. The Wedding Singer is a really well made rom-com, with some really funny moments. Punch Drunk Love is a fine arthouse film, though maybe not an Adam Sandler movie, even though he stars.

Gods and Generals was pretty poor though, a really disappointing follow up to the excellent Gettysburg.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Have to just quickly interject here that that's not always the case...with the exception of NOTLD ,George Romero (in his other two original "Dead" films) Had African American "heros" who not only survived to the end of the film, but were in fact one of the few surviviours...not that that has a hell of a lot to do with the depiction of African Americans in horror films...or anything at all to do with Skyline.

Honestly if you go into the movie looking for more than what you said, you are watching the movie for the wrong reasons. At the end of the day is it really worth obsessing over the stupidity of harvesting brains from a race of people that live across the universe from you?

@Grakmar: Now that I think about it, the only reason why I liked Little Nicky was because of Rodney Dangerfield. I have always been a fan of him and thought the pineapple shoved up hitlter's ass everyday was priceless.

There is no such thing as an alien invasion movie that makes sense. Everything on earth can be found more easily elsewhere in the universe. So, you know, I don't really see this as a valid criticism of Skyline.

Now, with that out of the way, I loved it. I have been waiting what feels like years for this movie. Finally, the side with interstellar travel doesn't get smashed by the ewoks. FINALLY. The aliens win!
