I didn't see this anywhere... Not BIG news or anything, but I know I'm anxious to get my hands on it.

A Light in the Grim Darkness: This month's battle report pits the noble Grey Knights against the insidious Chaos Daemons. Kevin Chin honours his sworn duty to hunt down and defeat Tom Hutchings' daemonic incursion on the planet of Skyraak.

Gee... I wonder how this is going to end.

My copy turned up last week.

It's an alright issue I guess, battle report provides enough detail and the generals actually explain some of their tactical thinking and choices beforehand as well for once, which is nice.

Spoiler:
Most telling part of the battle for me was exactly how devastating the "Dark excommunication" power was against the daemons, the ability to "turn off" Bloodletter power weapons or daemonette rending is amazingly handy it must be said.

I'm going to move this to discussions as whilst the cover piccie is nice and all, there aint' really much news here.

Is that how the cover looks? Single subject on a white background? I guess they tried to make the GK more striking... but I'd rather see some sort of background... like other GK-units or something... or maybe if they had a bunch of GKs fighting a bunch of Daemons and/or squats it would be cooler.

A few of the more recent ones have just been one dude against a white backdrop. The Storm Raven/Blood Angels issue and the Orcs and Goblins ones both come to mind.

Isn't that the art from the Grey Knights Omnibus, but with the background changed to white?

(Not that reusing artwork is a new thing.)

*peeked at a copy of the issue with Orcs and Goblins*

Oh hey you're right! Maybe I didn't notice as much because the Orc looks more dynamic than the GK.

Again, same as the BA cover a few issues back. Such a shame, the rest of the artwork looks great (I'm not 100% but I've got a feeling the artist has done work for 2000AD? It looks really similar style to the 'Slaine' stories than ran some years ago).

But for me, the basic proportion just ruins it, I know the standard models have heads which are slightly too large, but this goes too far the other way.

I can't even find a head on this model.

Seriously, did 38,000 years of evolution made it possible to squeeze a man's head between two fingers?

It just shows how tall Grey Knight are.

Assuming their heads are not shrunk during the knighting procedure, the proportion of head to body means this one is 12 feet tall.

That doesn't surprise me because I thought Grey Knights would be taller than ordinary SMs.

It does make sense to me that, if an average space marine is 10 feet, that a grey knight would be 12 feet.

Re: his tiny head. As I said the last time we discussed the ever-shrinking heads of space marines:

you know, I was looking at WD yesterday with a aim to actually reading it instead of just ridiculing it, and I sort of regret posting this. What if the head is correct? You know that disease, where your head gets enormous?

What if this guy has the grimdark future version of it, where his head is tiny?

He's out there every day, fighting the xeno, killing the mutant, protecting humanity with his tiny head, never once getting a moment's respite or a helmet that fits well, and here we are mocking him. What horrible ingrates we are.

So Grey Knights can "turn off" Daemon special abilities? Hell Blades is one thing, but how do you "turn off" very sharp claws? I hate how Warhammer doesn't make sense anymore.

Anyhoo, what other content is in WD aside from Grey Knights? Surely they have not forgotten about the Aracknarok already?

Hmm.. hmm.. hmmm..

There's a few pages about famous wwaaarghs in the Old World, some less successful than others. Small little piece about allies being useful in WOTR.

A few pages about painting and modelling Flesh Tearers.

And then lots and lots about the new GK kits and rules. The articles about the GK kits are pretty good and do show off some very nice possibilities. They also explain about the hows, whys, whats of the separate arms/weapons, especially the blades, and that#s cool to see how these decisions develop.

Odd, even by his standards, column by Mr. Johnson. Incredibly readable, as ever, dealing mostly with the concept of....

... less being more -- cf "Murder your darlings" -- especially when it comes to rules or, perhaps, more pertinently the writing thereof.

... I'm sure you can insert your own punchline or jibe here, and many will.

For now though, let's assume we've all done that and carry on as if we're all hilarious.
Oh, inside back cover shows and announces Tomb Kings in the next issue.

Whole magazine looks good, layout , use of white space etc etc is great. And I am pleased to see, for example, a bit more personality put in things like the battle report army selction blurb. One of them is Mr. Chin, who I noted had a pretty good Imperial Fists army list on the main GW site a wee while back. I approve of the writers and WD staff being able to show a bit more individuality, less corporate one could say at a stretch I guess, approach.

Oh, little puff piece about the various GD's this year and some photos of some of the Golden Demon winners from around the world. Includes the first, AFAIK, confirmation of the Uk GD date being the 25th of September this year.

Daemon Slayer is Mr. Merrit's chocie for the Citadel hall of fame.

That's about it as far as I can recall right now.

When did SM start being over 10' tall?

Back in the good old days I remember that they were 7' super warriors, much more realistic.

Models will have bigger heads as they are held to a scale (such as it is with GW), but artists are only limited by AWESOME, which is to say nothing. Nonetheless most are not that talented and still have to trace faces from family photos ergo tinie tinie heeds.

10 feet is probably the upper limit. There might be a few who just top it but nine feet is typical.

The idea of that power doesn't bother me, although I'm curious how well the implementation will work.

For fluff, the sharp claws, etc. are still a manifestation of the Warp being given physical form in the real world. Saying that the 'best of the best' Grey Knights that are above even the other Adeptus Astartes with even more training, consecrated gear, etc. have an ability that weakens this is perfectly believable in a setting where Nurgle's Rot can penetrate biohazard gear, Slaanesh can influence nearly anyone, etc.

When near a Grey Knight using the weakening power, the Daemons natural weapons become brittle, dull, or even spongy. The Daemons themselves frequently warp the real world by their presence: the Grey Knights 'fix' this and push back to reality, and reality doesn't have big nasty demons with claws longer than a man's arm that can pierce power armor.

However, and I hope I'm wrong, I'm guessing there will be a lot of questions like "Why does it remove X but not Y" and the usual grey areas. Kind of like the whole psycannon removing invulnerable saves in the previous edition, but in reverse.

Can I ask where you got the info on that Killkrazy? I always though 7-8ft was usual, topping out at maybe towards 9?

Regardless, the proportions of the marine on the cover are ludicrous. It's like those classical paintings of farm yard animals which are meticulous in their detail, but have grossly disproportional parts of their bodies.
