Just had a narrow escape from a malware attack (and no, I was not on a porn site - it was Total Film). Usual thing - Trojans! Worms! Click here to download a program to stop them infesting your computer! - Fortunately I've been here before, so I shut down the internet and ran my anitvirus software (which found one risk - a cookie ).
The thing is, I thought I put a stop to this nonsense by setting my pop up blocker to its highest level, but it still got through. Any other suggestions to block these things?

If you go to http://download.cnet.com/windows/ you can get spybot search and destroy, which will find most things and is free. You can also get Avast, which is an anti-virus program (you just need the free version).

Really wouldn't recommend using IE if you can help it unless you are on 8 or 9 which aren't as flawed as earlier versions. Get hold of Spybot (as Silver mentions). I also run Lavasoft Ad-aware (the free version) as well as Avira AV (which is also free). They all have a 'real-time' scan function that should stop the majority of nasties (unless you have a habit of visiting the most dodgy sites).

Use Firefox as a browser, get the add-ons AdBlock and Flashblock. This will cut risk down considerably.
Ad-Aware and Spybot are good, but I use Malwarebytes which I find is a better product (and free like the others).

I can't recommend Malware bytes stonly enough. i use IE, run McAfee and it still cleans better. catches all kinds of goodies my kids
usually pick up! http://www.malwarebytes.org/ and i run the free version. i would suggest checking every so often for updates.

The key point to take away is that no single AV / anti-malware program is foolproof. You need to run them in parallel to get best results. What one misses, the other finds and vice versa.

If you can be bothered to pay for it (and I'm not) kaspersky is supposed to be ultracool.
Spybot is good, I just got pissed off with dealing with the teatimer eating up my ram and finally deleted it.

They all have their overhead - tis the price one pays. My current set-up has 12GB RAM so I don't notice it much

Because people who make viruses know Mac users have suffered enough

I'd suggest you do your browsing in an isolated virtualized machine. VMware is your friend. It takes more than a little knowhow to attack the underlying machine from a virtualized browser and you always have the option to simply wipe out the virtualized machine on a whim.
Also, my DOWII works just fine on my mac. Thank you very much.
Edit: How? See above for a clue.
