I've got pics in my gallery that have 300ish views, and 5 votes. I look at other peoples posts, and see 0 gallery votes on tons of them, and it just makes me curious why nobody bothers voting on the images they look at?

Quite simply, voting takes work, and provides absolutely no benefit for the viewer.

I think the only way to combat it is to keep voting yourself. If you have work in the Gallery and would like folks to rate it, start rating others.

In effect you are paying forward the hope that others will do likewise. I try to spend just twenty mins to half an hour every few days doing just that and already over a short period my Gallery votes are building.

Not everyone will vote, or has to in all honesty, but if you are bothering to put in pics of your own work up. Then I think you should be trying to vote in there as well.

My opinion on the matter anyways.

I guess the OP can ask why he or she isn't voting. Starting a thread about why people don't vote when you only have 12 votes yourself seems kind of ridiculous.

I only looked at pics through the gallery before i joined Dakka. Now i just look at the pics in blogs and you cant vote there, indeed you can't even click on the image to take you to vote, usually...
EDIT: So if i wanted to vote on Djones' models i saw in his blog i'd have to find it in your gallery, not much work but hey....

EDIT2: Plus everything on the internet is inherited, if no one votes on mine why should i vote on theirs etc....

There are three ways to get gallery votes.

1. Do an astonishingly good model, so it gets voted on a lot and gets shown on the intro page more often, which gets it voted on more often.

2. Leave the picture in the gallery for a long time. It will eventually cycle through the front page, or be found by people searching, and pick up votes.

3. Use the picture to illustrate your posts. I've got a high rate of posting on my Hive Fleet Kielbasa pictures because I post one of them into threads on topics such as conversions and painting techniques. Any apporpriate thread will do.

As you will see...

Lol KK pushed that over the edge. My blog pics never link to the gallery so i get Bug-all views/votes. Correction i actually have one with 5 votes.

Check your own number of gallery votes, and you'll have your answer. Not because people people would vote more for you if you did vote, but because few people vote.

@Djones i just voted on some of your stuff. To my great annoyance i also had to tag them for you, maybe tag 'em if you want votes.
EDIT: i don't tag mine because i dont really mind about votes but if you do want votes there's no excuse.

Tagging also helps because people may search for images in the areas that interest them.

I wasn't fishing for votes, especially since I don't paint my own models. I was just using my own stuff as an example. I was honestly just curious if there was a reason people didn't do it. I haven't done that many votes because I don't dig through the galleries to much myself.

My images have been in my gallery for a long time. I have never seen them on the front page. not that they deserve to be there.. just saying...

Isnt that just random self promotion? Are you saying I should add this pic to every post I make?

Im just teasing. Never anything wrong with tooting your own horn.

OT : I vote a little here and there. I noticed that as you vote it switches to the next random pic. I want to see all the relevant pics and vote on them at once.

They only seem to refresh if you log out and log in again.

I have a few images with over 1000 views; the most has 30 votes (my Ad Mech Jawas) but another has 6 which is barely enough for the gallery to display the average score. People are looking through the galleries but just not stopping to vote. The turbo-voter is a great utility, I often have it open and do a couple of images between other tasks.

Pretty much this. Usually Ill make it a point to go and vote at least once, everytime I get on DAKKA. It still annoys me a bit when I see things like that happen though.

Well, maybe with the name changes that happen based on posts, why not require an equal amount of votes to comments to rank up a name? Granted, this could cause random voting to rank up but a vote is still a vote.

Art work, painting, scratch building is subjective by nature. What someone sees as a really good job on your work, someone else will say otherwise.

Which is why out of courtesy I will not vote on an item.

I tend to vote on them when I stick something in there and how long I stay and vote depends on my mood. Otherwise... i never/rarely visit the gallery.

There is a gallery?

Tend not to vote because I spend far too much time on Dakka as it is to trawl through the gallery only to get diheartened by everyone elses' genius.

Also as someone said, it is subjective and to me it does not feel right trying to quantify a qualitative experience. Nothing wrong with others doing so btw.

I like gallery voting using the turbovoter - nice to have the random parade of other people's work to enjoy and rate.
