Just received chaos knights models today - won't have time to work on them yet but couldn't resist myself so I just put them together roughly with blutack.

It doesn't go with the fluff but meh - just call them thunderhooves instead.

Do you guys think this would make a tournament legit thunderwolf model?
I'll probably keep the horse - if you guys think it'd be legit for tourneys

Any idea on how to add more wolfey impression anyone?

Here's a video

It's not a wolf that they ride. It's a "wolf". An alien creature that they thought looked like some terran animal that probably doesn't exist anymore and that they probably no longer even have pictures of.

Who's to say their "wolves" look like our wolves?

What?

There is a picture of it in the codex of what it's "supposed" to look like, and it still has wolf-like features. Also canis wolfborns' mount shows us that it still is similar to "our" wolves.

As for tournament use there's no real model for a thunderwolf so as long as you use GW parts and the correct base size anything should work. As always it really depends on your TO.

Seems pretty acceptable. But personally I'd work on reducing the horsey look a little, e.g replace the mouth or whole head, and it might be possible to shorten the legs into a more wolfy posture. And swap some of those chaos/spikey bits for SW icons etc.

So this is what Carnifexes are "supposed" to look like, then?
(man, wish I could find the art of the Zoanthrope...)

(and Canis' steed is obviously a mutant)

And back on topic: I think it looks good. I think it'd be allowed (but ask your TO, and be sure to tell your opponent ahead of time). Does it look very Space Wolf? Nope. But you play your army the way you want.

Didn't somebody once make an entire space marine army on horses? Anybody have the link?

Four scholars at Oxford were making their way down the street, and happened to see a group of ladies of the evening. “What’s this?” said the first. “A jam of tarts?” “Nay,” said the second, “an essay of Trollope’s.” “Rather, a flourish of strumpets,” advanced the third. “No, gentlemen,” concluded the last. “Here we have an anthology of pros.”

It doesn't go with the fluff but it looks a hell of a lot better than a marine on a wolf!

That picture that you posted is from an older edition Codex which I own, and YES that is EXACTLY what the model (which I also own) back then looked like.

As for Canis's "steed", no it's not a mutant. The codex specifically states that Fenris (yes it has a name) is the largest Thunderwolf. Simple as that.

I wonder where some of you guys get your info. from or if you just post without thinking. But other than all that wrong info, thanks for backing up what I already said about the horse mount most likely being fine and ultimately depending on the TO.

Nuclealosar, check this guys conversions out if you want to do more that are similar to the one you have:

I think he looks great. The arm's position look a little odd, but I think the horse is a great replacement for the wolves.

By the way since when did people obsess over that a model should look like the codex art? If that's the case then they need to take back what they said about the Tyrannofex and Tervigon pictures...

I like the idea and have seen it done before - the positioning of arms/upper body looks 'wrong' and otherwise spoils it for me.

Thanks everyone for the input!

@skelly - I've seen the ones in that link. They look quite cool at first, then upon close inspection, wolves with hooves look wrong.

Thanks for the ideas - will upload more pics as soon as I get some more done.

Cheers

Yes, I know, I have one as well.
But it's not what they look like -now-. So apparently all of those new ones look wrong. Or the old ones do.

And how is being extraordinarily large not a mutation? One could easily argue that anything beyond the usual standard deviation in size is such. And if it is indeed a mutant, who is to say it doesn't look a bit different than a normal one as well.

My point is that the way things look in an alien setting isn't always as simple as one might think. That aside from some art in the book, which, as Carni there shows, may or may not be accurate with the current look of things, there isn't a "right" way to portray a piece that has no model.

Sorry for trying to help you out with justification. ;P

well i think it should look more like a wolf because as all the fluff and iconagraphy show the have a pretty good understanding of wat a wolf looks like but as far as game terms i think it will be fine aslong as you are clear about wat it is

Kill the mutant.
Burn the heretic.
Purge the unclean.
