Subject: Sister's 40k Artwork - Sister of Battle(Update 06/11)
|
 |

|
After showing you some of my models, I wanted to present you some of my artworks as well.
Hope this is the right forum for things like that (@ the admins: please move this thread if I'm mistaken). ^^
I do mostly sisters of battle stuff, because I really like the design. I even came up with my own order, the Order of the Virtuous Lily. x3
Just a short information for those who really can't stand manga - that's my favourite style.
First, I want to show you my latest piece with the title "Loyalty..?".
It's not perfect, there are plenty of mistakes in proportions, armour, perspective and so on - but I hope you like it anyway.
Maybe somebody recognizes the marine in the picture - I just switched the cape's colors.
The sister's name is Salome of the Order of the Virtuous Lily.
There is actually a story to this picture, but maybe you want to make up your own first. Let me know what you think about it. :3
C&C apprechiated!

I can certainly see the time you've put in, the colours are very nice, especially the gold.
The only problem i have with it is a personal one: From what i've seen on certain websites i can't help but think it is about to get VERY unpleasant for the sister of battle...

Cool pics!
Man, looking at the proportion of the sister and the marine, now i understand why people allways try to do true scale......the mini don't fit!

like the way you have blended both scenes into one , at first i thought the perspective was waaay off , then i was like ,,arh.. now i see. i also like your purple and white, although personally i love manga , but dont like it representing 40k , having said that it does suit the sister . congrats and look forward to seeing more.

@Perkustin
Thanks a lot! I really put much time and efford in this piece. ^^
And don't worry about the sister - she's going to be fine.
@FantasyBob
Glad you like it, thanks!
I'd love to see GW produce true scale miniatures, but "unfortunately" their style features almost bizarre proportions. But after all it is not THAT bad and looks nice enough to make thousands of people addicted to it. ;D
@neil101
Yeah, some people told me the same about this scene-perspective-thing. It's a bit confusing.
I am glad you like it, next picture is already WIP.
@TyraelVladinhurst
Thank you!
It's all about hard work and practice. ;D

Thanks! ^^
Before I hit the hay for today, I'd like to show you a quick sketch of another Sister of battle - Sister Donna:
Hope you like her, she's my favourite sister so far. She enjoys close combat. And she's lesbian. ;D
You can't tell from the sketch, but aside from that, she's so much into violence and bloodshed, if she ever switched sides, she'd become a Khornite.

It's a good start but i see, you draw all by yourself, without education in graphics, and drawing. I'd suggest taking some time and learn about posing, composition, perspective, and body dynamics (and anatomy). I know it's manga but still, some education can make a very good pieces fo art out of these.

@Kubik
Nice to get that sort of feedback as well; though it was rather unexpected. But thanks for the advice!
Just to practice the anatomy, I did this rather quick (compared to my usual speed) pencil drawing - took me about an hour.
The title is "Collateral Damage" and it features Sister Wendla of the Order of the Virtuous Lily in her first campaign, having failed her duty to protect a group of civilians. In her hand she holds the torn ribbon of a now-dead little girl.
Hope you like that one as well!

The last one is actually very good. Much better than the rest. And just to be clear. I'm not playing a smartarse. I'm serius about some more academic study. There is much theoretical kwonledge about drawing, space, and composition, which can help you make a great step forward. Even for the sake of hobby, once a week for a couple of months is enough to change talent into skill. Keep up

yep great work. i can reccomend conceptart.org forums as a great place to learn the basics of anatomy, i use it regularly , your composistion of the last one is great . and the problem with the first one is that the close up would make more sense after setting the scene , with the second pic , as we tend to read left to right. and the floor perspective is incorrect. i like your colour choise for the moody sky and dull grass in the background of the 1st pic , you have a great and natural talent that could be honed into something even better. the composistion of the 2nd pic is good too , but her feet are suggesting she is on a slope , unless this is what you intended ,more research is needed to correctly pose them , the face is very good in this pic as is the details and shape of the armour. in the last pic you have captured mood very well. and her hands are great . i really cant encourage you enough to check out concept art forums if you havent already. there are some great tutorials on anatomy , colour and probably perspective. comic illustration like manga or marvel etc is cool but will learn bad practices , that can be avoided with proper study of the body. not trying to preach although it probably sounds like it , ;-) its just that they helped me alot a few years back. keep it up , you are prolific.

Thanks a lot, it's one of my favourites, too.
I know that some academic studies could give me a lot of new opportunities and increase my skills, but every time I try, l get bored after drawing a few lines. I really need to pull my socks up. oO

@neil101
Thank you for your advice and criticism!
I checked out conceptart.org and it really seems to be an awesome and useful place. I will keep an eye on it.
Here I present you my latest drawing:
The Virtuous Lily
There once was a sister superior of the Order of Our Martyred Lady holding a village's gate against a seemingly unending tide of chaos cultists. Having fought bravely for an entire day and night, she eventually fell to her knees and died, not without having slain every single foe.
When her sisters finally found her, they buried her in the centre of the village she had saved. When the next spring had arrived, a single purple lily had grown on her grave and was proclaimed a sign of the Emperor and her former squad decided to found the Order of the Virtuous Lily to honour her courage and her sacrifice.
The village later became the capital of the chapter's homeworld. Since then, for nearly six millennia, the flower had appeared every spring.
Hope you like it.

Last pair is definitely head and shoulders above your previous work, I must say. Impressive, most impressive!
As for plastic Sisters... well, it would be nice to have them, but still, there are reasonable alternatives as far as converting them goes, especially when you take into consideration that more and more people go for True Scale Space Marines.

This time I'm not able to show you an elaborate picture, but a few sketches of some novice sisters of battle.
I wanted my chapter's sister's basic training to include three major aspects:
1. Some kind of substitute for the local arbites - military/martial aspect
2. Basic medic training - medical aspect
3. Everyday tasks, e.g. educational work - social aspect
Here you can see the outfit they wear at the military part:
Novice Sister Donna
And this is the outfit they wear at the social aspect part:
Novice Sister Caleida
The third outfit is already designed, but not ready to be presented yet. xD
What do you think about it?
