I'm building a piece of terrain that I'd like to incorporate some H. Bolter shells into it, and I'm having some trouble locating a good source. I've seen some folks use wire and that just doesn't appeal to me. Can anyone suggest an alternate method, I thought I'd run across a company that sold shell casings but I can't find them via the Google.

I've seen shell casings made by rolling a thin line of green stuff out, then cutting it to the appropriate length for the shell once dry. If you want to be semi detailed, use a small drill bit to hollow out the end.

BLAM! I don't remember if you want Heavy, or Heavy +, but they have really good customer service, so just ask em and they'll tell you.

Round plastic rod, cut neatly to length, paint brass, paint one end black.

There are fancy resin versions avaialble, but they seem awfully expensive for something so small.

it is an initial investment but check his out;

This tool is soooo awesome. You would be able to use it for making the larger diameter base that you could then attach the round plastic rod too. It is a pretty versatile little tool though and has some many uses, take a look at this picture;

The rivets on his legs were made using this punch. Hope that helps!

Thanks! I think I'll go with them, a few bucks for a ton of shells seems pretty reasonable to me. They also have some skeleton bits I see, I was thinking I'd have to pick up a box of skellies from the squarebasing side of the store but their's looks much better.

I'll just point out that bolt weapons fire rockets, they leave no shell casings

Check out Zinge studios,creations,labs (something like that). He makes ammo belts that fit for bolters, ACs, and HBs. They have a wire in them so you can bend them to fit what ever. So you can either just cut the wire or maybe he can make a strip without the wire so you can just separate the shells

Bolt weapons are bi-propellant. A small charge kicks them out the weapon and then the rocket motor takes over. Every single piece of artwork ever done by GW shows bolt weapons pouring brass out.

To the OP, I would go the greenstuff route. IF you're sculpting other thing then you usually end up with some left over that you can roll into sausages of different thicknesses and then store for later use. Used this technique for twiddling up my Destroyer:

If you want spent shells, what about just getting some hollow plastic tube, such as that found in cotton buds (q-tips for yanks), and blocking up one end with green stuff/glue/etc?

In other threads I saw it go back and forth about this. I saw some rubbish about how there was a "starter" bit that was attached to the shells, but as I understood it GW said they have cases on some of the models cause it looks cool.

I kind of agree. Its not really accurate, but its cinematic.

Get some of the bullets from the bandoliers or debris in an ork sprue and cut them so they look like casings.

Some 1/16" - 1/8" brass, copper or plastic tubing and a cheap pipe cutter (guillotine style for plastic, cinch'n'spin for the metal) might be able to do the job quickly and cheaply, with no need for shipping or for paint.
