Subject: Why does Matt Ward get to write "almost" every codex?
|
 |
Dakka Veteran

Is he their main writer or something? Is he is a space-marine fanboy having written Ultramarines, BAs, and now Grey Knights? Matt Ward has single-handily wrote the over-powered Blood Angels, terrible fluff Grey Knights and now he will write the Necron codex? The best and most balanced 5th edition codex so far as been Dark Eldar. They need to use that book as a model of a good book - no Mephiston. We need to sign a "fire Matt Ward" petition, and make Phil Kelly write more books.

It's people not understanding things.
Matt Ward doesn't "write almost every codex".
As of now, he's "written"(aka: helmed the production of) exactly 3(Space Marines, Blood Angels, and now the Grey Knights) books.
Robin Cruddace has written 2(Imperial Guard and Tyranids), Phil Kelly has 4(Orks, Dark Eldar, Craftworld Eldar, and Space Wolves), and the rest of the 'current run' of Codices(at least that I have on hand. My Black Templars book has vanished and it irks me) that have released since Ward's been working for them are cooperative efforts of two long-time studio members(Andy Hoare & Jervis Johnson on Dark Angels, Alessio Cavatore[blargh!] & Gav Thorpe on Chaos Space Marines) collaborating together.

Oh my god will everyone shut up about Mat Ward forever, tia.
Phil Kelly is my favorite writer GW's got. All of his books are fun, fluffy, and competitive (or were at the time) while Cruddace is 1 for 2. Ward writes books with decent rules (if sometimes poorly worded) but bad fluff. I'd like it if Jervis wrote something new, since Battle Missions was pretty cool and that was his.

I think Jervis has just kind of settled back and begun thinking about retirement, mostly from the reaction that Dark Angels got.

You guys miss the obvious.
The author doesn't matter. GW's edict that Power Armor armies must be easy to use, and very strong so that the entry level 12 year old who gets in will have a good chance of winning games, without having their troops get mowed down by bolter fire and not having to make a saving throw.
Don't blame the Authors at all. Whenever they touch a marine/Imperial book, the heads at GW obviously tell them to make the book as powerful as possible to entice newer players. Marines/Imperial Armies are the flagship armies of the game. Of course they aren't going to be "balanced" like the xenos books.
I have no issue with Matt Ward or Phil Kelly for writing broke dick codices. They are just doing their job.

In all honesty, joking aside, what 40k is what it is because of its background. Few people would play this game without the visuals and fluff. Mat Ward writes absolutely terrible background, which harms the game where it hurts most.
Usually when a new codex comes out, people are all like "oh, cool new units, awesome art, it can do *what!@#!@?*".
When the GK book got into the hands of the players at my store, people went "haha that's slowed, are you joking, is that actually in there? oh my god it is, wtf..."
While this hasn't been restricted just to Mat Ward's books, it has been most pronounced with his works (although Phil Kelly's Space Wolves also fit in here) and has reached a crescendo with this newest work since starting out with C:SM in 2008 and the gakfest that was all the stuff that wasn't copy/pasted directly from the 2E C:UM.
Given how much this game and hobby is based off of the Warhammer universe's fluff, that's not a good thing.

And once again, there's actually very little when read in its entirety, and not going off third hand sources in the Grey Knights book that goes against canon.

Lets take Draigo for example, he banished Mortarion with the help of a full squad of some of the most elite GKs in the universe and even then was the only survivor

Even the stuff that isn't so much against Canon, is just so ridiculous and silly as to cross the line into parody. That's the biggest problem. It doesn't feel like I'm reading battles of epic heroes in a desperate hour, it feels like I'm reading a bad internet fanfic with the Mary Sue-est of characters.

Oh okay. That sounds better. In some way... But it doesn't really make sense because Moratain never actually has left his planet. It kinda doesn't make sense for him to leave because he was emo.... You Now Vak, that could be said about my lore. But I don't complain, I improve. Which Matt Ward seems to be missing in his works. Thats why I don't accept the grey knight lore about the sisters and Drago as REAL lore.

Some of the stuff is explicitly labeled to be "legends" so it becomes a bit more excusable that way.
