It's been a busy week, but I've gotten most of the flyrant put together. He's got a bunch more work to go. The fuel hose will get bent into shape when it dries, there's a bunch of green-stuffing to do, and he needs more armor and rivets, but here's a WIP shot to get the gist of what he'll look like:

By the end of the weekend, he'll be done, and all the 'nids will be primed blue.

Also, between tyranid sessions, I've made more progress on the wolves. Here are a few of the long fangs (with heavy volkites) and 10 more grey hunters:

I finished up the first 3 looted nid models this afternoon. Here are the finished pics of the 3 kans / warriors:

Next up, I'll be finishing up the zoanthropes, then the flyrant.

Not sure how I have missed this thread, except for the fact that I rarely get the chance to browse any more.

But still, great stuff!

I am always surprised why there are not more followers here, it must be another one of life's mystery as this thread is awesome

The new kans looking great nice paint job as well but the flyrant is rocking so far I might have to try this one my self, I ain't much of a SM fan but your wolves are looking pretty cool plus I like the more archaic vibe.

The warriors are phenomenal, they'll look great behind a wall of carnifex and screen of hormogaunts! Wrecker Node!

Thanks for the kind words all; I think you're right, jlgunder. The kans will look really good stomping along in the wake of 3 fexes and a pile of gaunts. My original plan was to do exactly that - I like the look of the wrecker formation.

I finished the 3 looted zoanthropes this week, and I've got the final pics here for your viewing pleasure:

And as is ever the case, as I'm looking at these finished pics, I see that I forgot to finish the inside of 2 of the grots' mouths. I'll get those knocked out right after this gets typed!

I also finished up the WIP space wolf pack this week; now the Spartan has a unit to ride it into battle:

I'm happy with this Space Wolf formula - it makes for solid grey hunters I think. The next wolves will be blood claws though, and consequently won't be pelted up.

I still haven't thought of a great recipe for a wolf priest yet, but something will come to mind I'm sure. I'm tempted to wait until the Prospero campaign book comes out to see what FW puts together. I'm sure it will look incredible.

Up next, it's time to finish up the looted nid commission - the Flyrant is priority for the week. Additionally, I'll be starting on 10 blood claws in the off time.

More to come soon,

Dan

The zoanthropes look awesome! I didn't catch it in the previous pictures (before paint), but I love that the grot has a pneumatic hammer (or whatever) in the zoanthrope's head. The hanging grot remains my favorite, though.

Thanks for making the neurothrope easy to tell apart from the rest! These look great!

The zoanthropes rock match up nicely with your previous work, love the grot green bouncing off the blue really pops well

Now I will be honest I ain't a SM fan "quietly spits at the floor" however I do like your Wolf Pack that mx of sci-fi and medieval vibe is spot on.

Great conversion work and splendid paint work, I want to call these Black Watch for some reason

The green stuffing on the wolves was pretty subtle - mostly using pelts to cover tricky spots and filling out the hair on the marauder heads - but I'm glad it looks good to the impartial eye. Sometimes it's easy to get either overly critical or overly pleased with our own work I think.

I finished up the flyrant today, so tomorrow I'll get the looted tyranids into the mail. They were fun to to work on - maybe I'll have to get a tyrannocyte put together sometime.

Here are the finished pics:

Next up, I'll be finishing up a unit of skitarii and 10 30k blood claws.

Agreed, the flyrant is amazing. It's going to look totally menacing on the table, can't wait to field it.

Hope I can convince you to do the tyrannocyte!

I'm so happy that you were able to do more models in this scheme for me...it's thematically the coolest army I've ever seen, and people flip when they see it for the first time. The added figs give it some range that the original army lacked, I'm so happy to be able to add them to the crew.

Thanks again!

I'm sure I'll take on the tyrannocyte project soon enough - I need to clean up a few other models first though!

Here's what's been cleaned up first:

10 skitarii rangers

And 10 30k blood claws

The skitarii are going to wear two hats. First, they'll be skitarii rangers in an upcoming mechanicus list. Second, they'll get to be adsecularis tech thralls in my mechanicum list. I'm a sucker for dual use models.

The blood claws are pack Blood Rake, the first half of a 20 man tactical squad with pistols & CCWs for the 30k wolves. They're the cherries of the Space Wolf Legion, as is evidenced by their woefully un-stylish standard issue power armor. I wanted them to provide contrast for the much cooler looking, pelt wearing, grey hunters. The Space Wolves, more than any other legion, seem to adhere to the rule of cool (hence the lack of helmets), so this seems appropriate.

More to come,

Stop tempting me with SM they look pretty cool I have to agree, Space Wolves have been the one chapter that has almost forced me to indulge.
They do look rather bad ass and I think it is the no helmet rule that gives them that edge.

Those are my thoughts exactly. As anyone knows, you can't be cool in a helmet. If ball caps were fashionable in 40k, you can bet the space wolves would wear them.

Today's project headed in a different direction. I'm a big fan of the mechanicum/mechanicus stuff in general, but the dune crawler didn't sit well with me. There's something about that sentinel box on top that rubs me the wrong way.

I was going to abandon picking them up at all, until I saw the new Kataphron tank dudes, and my brain crapped out an idea. Here's what it turned into.

He's magnetized, so I can switch his weapons; the kit was so easy to work with I was even able to have swappable cabling to increase the coolness a bit. I think I'm going to work a bit more armor onto the torso, but he's about built.

I think the 2 kits were made for each other; the kataphron torso fixes everything I hated about the dune crawler.

What are your thoughts on the matter dakka?

I'm glad you dig the walker man - I like the look of him much more than the half sentinel thing.

So, the more I look at the kataphron kit, the more I like it, but I still don't like it much as one piece. Rather, I think the tank tread half of the kit will look great as some sort of rapier or tarantula unit, and the servitor half of the kit builds excellent other stuff.

When I read the description of the kataphron breachers in the codex, I see a unit with legs, but I've struggled with what sort of legs to use for a few days now. Today, I had a flash of insight while poking through a bits bag and came up with this:

The MK III legs are bulkier than normal space marine legs, and they fit the servitor's torso quite well. I'm not quite sure if I want to keep the gyroscopic belt or not, but so far I like the look of him pretty well. He's certainly a hell of a lot closer to my mental picture of a combat servitor than the treaded guys. I'm not sure he'd be stable enough on 2 legs to be a devestator, but he'll serve well as a breacher I think. He's definitely going to need a bit of base scenery to fill out the 50mm a bit.

What are your thoughts; does he work?

I also finished up the 10 long fangs I've been working on; here they are:

I need to finish up 10 more blood claws, and the 30k wolves will be on hold for a while while I finish the mechanicus stuff up.

More to come!

Been a while since I checked in, but sooooo glad I did... That Flyrant is simply awesome on every level. I like the Servitor dude, the legs look great. I didn't like the gyro-belt thingy at first, but looking at it again I'd say it fits the style of the model very well...

It's been a busy hobby weekend; I finished up the dune crawler today. Here he is in all his enslaved glory:

I'm pretty sold on this mix. I've got 2 more dune crawlers planned, and I'll use the rest of the kataphron kit to fix them up.

Work on the mechanicus/mechanicum continues. As before, these models represent the forces of the forgeworld of Gryphonne IV before its destruction by the tyranids. The world still relied heavily on the now largely abandoned legio cybernetica technologies, such as thallax and castellax units.

First, here's the finished shot of my first breacher servitor.

I'm pretty stoked about this guy; he looks like what I imagine battle servitors should look like after reading The Kaban Project and Mechanicum. I see 3-4 more friends in the near future.

Second, here's a WIP shot of my destroyer conversion. I envision these guys as automated versions of the rapier chassis. I went this way for a few reasons. 1. I don't dig the tank/dude models. 2. I think the bipedal servitor might be a bit unsteady with a full gravcannon. 3. I have several leftover tank chassis leftover from the conversion work.

Here's the initial WIP shots. He still needs a bit of bulking out, a second weapon, plenty of antennae, and a few mecha-arms.

And finally, the kits yielded enough bits to rework a former conversion I was unhappy with. My darkfire cannon equipped castellax units always looked crappy; the weapon didn't look alien enough. Here's what I worked them into instead:

What are your thoughts on the destroyer and breacher conversions? Do they work?

I got a bit more work done on the mechanicus lads and the army of light this week. Here are the pics:

The dominus kit is awesome. I don't usually love models straight out of the package, but this guy looks exactly like I wanted him to with no conversion needed. The only thing I'll criticize about the kit is that you won't be able to build a second one of them without a good bit of work unless you want them to look virtually the same. The head swap doesn't help much.

Anyway, more to come!

Hey all, I have a small update today. Here are two finished models for the escalation army (the army of light): A BSB on daemonic steed and a chaos wizard (cleric).

After a few days work, I finished up a few more projects.

First, here are the last 10 30k blood claws; I'll get a group shot of the whole company together soon. Again, these are the company's peltless whelps, so they are fairly unadorned. The MK 3 iron armor is pretty sick looking.

Next, here are my converted Sicarian Ruststalkers. I'm not thrilled with the actual models; these look more like I want them to.

Finally, here are the skullcrushers for my army of light. Obviously, they're converted demigryphs:

On an aside, the army of light was successful this week. Using the titan miniature as Kholek Suneater, the last skytitan got his revenge on the ogre kingdoms. After eating an ironblaster shot and almost dying, he managed to get back in the fight and smash the ogre general. In some small measure, he avenged his lost people.

Indeed. They make great stuff, but they don't make all the great stuff. By incorporating everybody else's best models, the hobby can only get better.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Today was nerd reorganization day. After a few months of gaming, the storage shelves had run amok, so I took everything off and resorted it. In the process, I took an army shot of the Wolves. I'm still not set on which company it represents yet; I'm waiting until the Prospero Burns book is released by FW.

Here are the pics:

I still need to put together some rockin' wolf priests, but other than that, more dreads, and a few outliers (I'm looking at you fire raptor), she's about done. 56 lads in power armor, 31 in terminator armor, 5 pods, 1 contemptor, and a few tanks.

More to come,

Dan

Today I got more work done on the Mechanicus(m) forces from Gryphonne IV. First, I finished up several more kataphron breacher converions. I can't imagine why anyone would mount a close range, urban assault guy on tracks. How does he clear anything above the first floor? Mine have legs:

Next up, I decided my destroyers would be AI guided hunter/killer units. These guys are track mounted, as the tracks provide a better long range firing platform. The AI units are slaved together (and to the dominus in charge) to ensure synchronized fire support.

Finally, here's the second dunecrawler conversion. He's obviously servitor guided too. The third crawler is going to be built into a command vehicle, with the top portion converted from a tech-priest model.

That's all for today. The mechanicus is a blast to put together; the kataphron kit is a great source of mechanicus conversion bits.

More to come,

Dan

Wow, it's been a long time since I posted anything new!

Rest assured though, the brush hasn't been idle. Here's what's been going on the last few weeks.

First, We finished up the WHFB league and moved on to a new campaign: Gorkamorka!

In truth, we're playing a post-apocalyptic campaign using the Gorkamorka rules, so there will probably be a few more humans than normal. Here's my starting gang:

They're called "The Emasculators", and they're re-purposed Raging heroes models. It should be a fun campaign I think.

Next up, I went to QCR to play on of the last 8th edition fantasy tournaments that's ever likely to happen. It was an awesome event with a ton of great armies & players, and I managed to take home the 1st place players choice award. Here's the shot of the zombie pirate display board:

I also finished up the 6 battle servitors and started converting the AoS Khorne guys into World Eaters, but as there aren't any pictures of those yet, I'll leave them for another update.

Until next time,

Dan
