Congrats on finishing the infantry! Rohan would be the faction for me, if I ever start that game. Such lovely models and the hero sculpts are all so cool.

Oh, yes. Must have a shot of all those awesome minis together. The cloaks are fantastic.

Viterbi - Thanks! I absolutely recommend trying the game out. Middle Earth has a really tight ruleset is really quite fun to play. Plus yes, amazing sculpts through the entire range. The only downside to the Middle Earth range is that due to scarcity of some of the old metal minis, the price of them can range from "Ooh that's a bit more then i'm comfortable paying for a single mini", to "Jesus feth no, i'm not paying that much you swindling con-artist!". Other then that though, it's fantastic all round and well worth investing some time and effort into if you like LotRs.

YWS - Thanks, mate. I must admit to being quite proud of the Royal Guard cloaks. A nice rich contrast to the shabbiness of the rest of them.

Army Shot!

Open the spoiler to view the huge photo.
See if you can pick out the very first warrior I painted many years ago. He's quite noticeable...
Spoiler:

I also uploaded a whole host of pictures showing off the individual groups and such.

This is probably also a good time to do a State of the Hobby post.
3 4 months left of the year and how am I going with the 2020 Hobby goals?

1. Play 1 game of 40k a month.
Absolute write off this year has been for gaming. In and out of lockdown/isolation and a new edition of 40k.

2. Finish Dark Angels 5th Company.
- 1 Chaplain, 1 Tactical Squad, 1 Assault Squad, 2 Devastator Squads, 3 Dreadnoughts.
- At least 1 Razorback and 4 Rhinos.
- Bases.
I'm in a bit of holding pattern with the Angels at the moment. What with 9th dropping and the current state of things lore-wise, I've very much lost a lot of the enthusiasm I had for space marines and 40k in general.
I still plan on finishing the 5th company, if nothing else. But I've diverted a lot of my hobby funds towards Middle Earth stuff, so I guess it'll take longer then I expected.
On the plus side though, I've finished rebasing all of the 5th company squads. And i've got the chaplain and last tactical squad sitting there ready to go.

3. Paint 15% of all LotR miniatures currently owned. (45 Models)
Done! Properly done.
As of the last batch of Rohirrim i've now painted this year 36 Rohirrim, 3 Royal Guard, Gamling, Eowyn, Hama, 5 Gondorians, 5 Uruk-hai, 9 Orcs, Orc Captain.
62 models in total. And i'm sure I'll paint more before the year is out.

4. Make headway with 2 other armies.
Working on the Abyssal Brethren is my challenge for this month. If I can get them all converted and ready for painting, then I'll consider that 50% of the goal done.
I've got a Skeleton Horde SC! box that constitutes the other 50% of this goal. But that's planned for October.

5. Paint a Bust or 54mm Miniature.
The Hoplite bust was initially my challenge for September. I can't get the specific paints I want to use for it though, because Scale75 won't ship to Australia due to Covid restrictions. So that's been pushed back for now and the chaos marines bought forward.

6. Finish Dark Angels Auxillery forces.
- 4 Deathwing Squads.
- 1 Ravenwing Attack Squadron.
- Base Ravenwing Demi-squadron/Black Knights.
These are in much the same boat as the 5th company. I've ordered a bunch of bike bases to help bring all my ravenwing squads all into line with the current bike bases (big ovals).

7. Paint 3x Random things.
2/3 done. Bone Cultists of Hastur and the Tzeentch chaos warrior. (which i'm not sure I ever posted here...)

8. Finish Tablescape tiles and enough terrain for a 4x4 table.
Waiting in the wings.

9. Enter a competition (gaming/painting/AoP/etc).
I'm calling this one done. Entered a Dakka Comp and 2 Instagram painting comps.
Not the competitions I had in mind initially, but circumstances dictate that I enter whatever comps make themselves available...

10. Be more active on Dakka.
That's what I'm doing.

As always, thanks for checking in!

Great job finishing off your Rohrim infantry, a good Army shot always boosts morale I think! Your hobby goals seem to be going well, but September is only just beginning, so you have 4 months of the year left! Good luck getting them done!

4 months..... yes.... That's what I said....

Uggh. In my head it's still the 148th of March or something. So I don't know what this September malarky is all about.

Thanks though! Army shots are indeed satisfying. Gives you something tangible.

Army shot is great. Next up, all the horses!

The Ordo Chrono has really dropped the ball this year. Or will drop it. or are currently dropping it. So hard to assign blame to time travelers; they are always so tense.

You seem to be doing pretty well on your goals. This year threw all of us a curveball.

Beautiful army shot Snrub! Rohirim were definitely one of my favourite forces back when I collected LotR. Its sad that the game has died away, it was so awesome when it first came out and had some really cool models.

You've also done a great job painting and photographing them

Thanks everyone. I appreciate the love!

Zahnib - Funny you say that, because i've always been under the impression that it's always held on pretty strong in Australia. At least it has here in Melbourne. And from what I can gather from the people I follow on Instagram, it seems pretty popular in Brisbane as well.
Maybe you're in an unlucky dead-spot?

So I may have been a bit premature when I pronounced the Rohirrim infantry finished in my last post. I'd put these two out in the shed to prime at some point (like aaaaages ago....) and then promptly forgot about them.

Oh well. Better late then never.
A generic captain with bow and shield, converted from ranger Faramir and a banner-man.

Me and banners, I swear.... Got the front side done, no issues. Couldn't paint the reverse side up evenly for love nor money.
Plus the banner itself is constructed pretty roughly, which doesn't help.

Lastly, for today, a bit of work done on the Abyssal Brethren. This is the the plague surgeon, who I'm in the process of turning into plague doctor based of the character from the game Darkest Dungeon.

I've shaved off all the gakky Nurgle stuff, taken the vial and syringe gun from the Biologus Putrifier, a beakie head with added eye lenses and stuck on some more random vials.
All that's left is to add a hood and maybe some studs to the right shoulder pad.

And the character he's based off.

As always, thanks for checking in and leaving feedback.

Well done finishing the rohrim... again! the last pair look cool and I like the Nordic style horse icons, cool touch!

I like the plague doc conversion, he’s well on the way to matching the inspiration! The beanie head looks a bit small for the plague marine body, but the hood should tie it all together nicely I reckon. Cool stuff

I must just be hanging out in the wrong part of town

Those last two Rohirrim turned out great! Nice freehand on the banner and shield (is that Whilstshire Horse I see? ) Also awesome idea with the plague doctor beakie marine! I don't think I've seen that before, look forward to seeing him with a hood on and painted up

I was really surprised when I saw how small that head was in comparison to the DG heads. It's so much smaller. I had to add a spacer underneath it just so it stood out a bit. And yes, hopefully the hood gives it enough bulk and ties it all in together.

Did you mean the Uffington White Horse? Because that was the one I plagerized was inspired by.

I was thinking maybe I'll use the Cerne Abbas Giant for a Dunlander banner.

That plague marine with the beanie head looks great . The head is a little small and I think needs a slight neck extension, but a simple hood of greenstuff to match the artwork and lift the head just a bit would really help it match the photo you have.

Love the Uffington horse hommage. Of course I know it from another hommage, because the Discworld has a very similar horse on the chalk.

Great conversion start on the plague doc, excited to see him with the hood.

YWS - He really does make an excellent Rohirrim! Only had to shave down the silver tree on his chest and swap out his sword!
Theo - His head does have a spacer under the neck. Do you think it needs to be higher still? But I agree, the hood will help bulk it out and tie the model together hopefully.
Viterbi - Oh yes! I do love the Discworld series. The Wee Free Men especially.
Gobert - Yeah I feel like I need too now. Its too good not to have on a banner!

I made a small start on the hoplite bust today. Not much to show really, but I painted the eyes and skin.

I'm pretty happy with it for the moment, but I may add another round of highlights later on.

Cheers!

Howdy folks.

Been working on the Fellowship of the Ring slowly now for a while.
I've tried to get them as accurate to the movies as I can (Owning the extended editions with all the special features was a big help!), and I have to say, I think i've done a fair job of it.

The Hobbits

The Three Hunters

The Fallen

More images.
Spoiler:

These models were an absolute joy to paint (although the colourful hobbits were especially fun!) and I put in just over 26 hours of work on them, all told.
Frodo at some point in the past, got damaged. So his nose is quite.... no existent now, but that was the only real issue with any of them.

Larger images in my gallery. Comments and Critiques always welcome!
Thanks for stopping by.

Inspiration to those of us with members of the gang languishing unpainted.

Howdy folks.

Been a hot minute since i've posted. Time to change that.

Thanks kindly for all the comments regarding the Fellowship. They really are beautiful models to paint.

My next offering is still Middle Earth related. Some filthy orcs this time though. I'd painted a few testers previously, but I decided to round them out to a small horde.

The Horde.

Command

Hand Weapons

Two-handed Weapons

Spears

Bows

I don't mind admitting that I struggled with these minis. I strive to stay as movie-accurate as I can and in this case it sort of bit me in the arse. Unlike the Gondorians or Uruk-hai who have relatively simple schemes, the orcs are a bit more mish-mash, with lots of different cloth and leathers, as well as plenty of different skin tones. That sort of colour variety is a painting death sentence for me and quickly overwhelmed my tiny brain. So in the end I stuck predominantly to browns and yellows for fabrics and tried to inject a shot of colour with the occasional blue or green. The skins tones I kept to fairly easy 4 types (Green, Pink, Brown/Orange & Blue/Grey) and used different shades/highlights to get different finishes.

Even ~20 years on (yikes!) and the plastics still look pretty good (Although some of the faces are a bit naff in places). The metal sculpts though are superb. Really characterful and add some lovely variety to the filthy tide and if they come up for sale again I'd definitely grab more.

As always, C&C very welcome.

Good to see you back Snrub! I took a bit of hobby hiatus as well. Your Fellowship is really nicely painted! Legolas and Sam especially. Those old metal models really do hold up. Its a shame that the LotR range got a bit of a hammering towards the end of life with all the not-so-crisp plastic models. Your orcs are looking great though
