Quoting from a guy who has beautifully painted armies, but I dident have time to ask him WHY that is before he left. I like the way it dulls down shining gold (the only thing I have tested it on besides a sprayed white model) but what do people tend to use it for? Is it instead of black wash over metals to give it a dirty look? Is it a simple way to do deathwing-bleached bone then delvin mud wash and highlight?

What does delvin mud wash do that I am missing that gives it such rave reviews?

It is excellent for using on golds both enriching the color and shading it, it is also amazing for using on brown and red cloths, water it down and dab it on a face and you have instant and decent shading on the face the list goes on, the limit is your imagination haha

Those reasons, yeah. It's also great for skulls which you might have noticed GW is a pretty big fan of, esp if you're a marine or CSM player. it's good for cloaks, and with the current painting aesthetic favoring more muted colours (give me 2nd edition colour schemes any day!), it's just a really versatile tool that can wear a lot of hats.

Devlan Mud is nice because of its universal application. You can bascoat a mini in pretty much any color(s) and give it a wash of Mud to get a very nice tabletop quality mini very quickly. And if you want to highlight up from there, that just makes it look even better.

It has been referred to as "artist in a can" at the local FGS. Think of it as dipping without that dipped look.

Hmm I dident know it was so versatile, and I have actually dipped models in the past and was pleased with the results. Would it work for imperial fists or deathwing, would like a simple paint scheme to finish a deathwing army.

It works to add shading and character to any earthy/dark color. About the only color Mud will not work on is yellow and orange.

Does Vallejo make a similar product? I have to run to the LGS today and I'm sorely tempted to use this with my goblins.

You might want to try Deneb Stone + Gryphonne Sepia for Deathwing.

Here's a great way to do yellow with Gryphonne Sepia.

Here's one that used Devlan Mud, but no other information about the paints used - definitely a higher-grade painter as well.

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

Pretty much all of the above are reasons why I too love Devlan Mud across most of my armies.

I maintain that there is very little in the Imperial order of battle that doesn't benefit in some way from it's use, either as a general wash or to pick out certain colours, to give things a worn in, battle stained look.

If it's stupid & it works, it's not stupid.

Probably work

Delvan Mud and Gryphonne Sepia are pretty amazing for the amount of no-skill effortless shading you can put out. I've dirtied up quite a few IG uniforms with the two that I'd never be able to do myself.

The best stuff for reds, I've found, is Thraka Green.

I think Devlan Mud is the best thing in the entire universe because of how HORRIBLE it smells. It's like how when you were a kid, medicine seemed to work better the nastier it tasted, only with smell in the case of Devlan Mud.

What makes Devlan Mud "the best product for painting"? Hipsters.

The supply does not get to make the demands.

Stop talking about how much you like this stuff or one of two things will happen:

1. GW will discontinue it

2. They will double the price

They have spies here...

Vallejo makes a 'Smoke' Wash and I've used it effectively on my Flames of War US.

Heh maybe if we all say ok they've priced us out the market now and people stopped buying their models then they'd drop the prices
That or it's their legal department scouts looking for who else to sue

DM is a great wash especially over scab red on my WoC marauders atm, such a time saver

Vallejo makes an infinite number of great washes. They're all packed in a bottle labeled "Glaze Medium." Just add regular paint of your choice.

I don't think it's just Devlan Mud (though it might be the most versatile), but all of GW's washes are pure magic. My VC skeletons are just a white undercoat with a single coat of Gryphonne Sepia and they look fantastic. A buddy of mine is doing an entire O&G army with a white undercoat and one or more applications of washes. The army looks like he spent hours highlighting it and it takes just a few minutes a model.

I use Vallejo Smoke a lot, and the stuff I've been using isn't really a wash. It's a thin clear liquid with a whole bunch of really tiny gritty oily-black/brown particles in it. It's the best stuff in the world for grunging things up.

I agree, ArmorOfContempt--a nice way of making 'dirtier' dirt. I do use Devlan Mud a fair amount, though.

To the poster asking about yellow a little way back: I have achieved good results using Gryphonne Sepia to shade (and Devlan Mud in the most recessed areas), over Iyanden Darksun.
