I had another thread lying around about my hive fleet with some test schemes, but my old scheme annoyed me. The amount of time it took to get even a table quality gaunt ready was obscene. So I started anew - a resurgence of Hive Fleet Behemoth. My scheme follows pretty closely to what is in the 5th edition codex, with the exception of highlighting the armour with shadow grey instead of blue. The grey fits better with the black armour, and shadow grey has a shade of blue to it anyway. I'm trying to get the red to look kind of dirty, inspired by a Behemoth log I saw on Warseer.

My primed army, or waiting to be stripped.
Spoiler:

Hormagaunt and Termagant.

Gargoyle wings - took me a while to figure out what to do with the membranes and settled on leathery brown.

I started this as an attempt to mativate me, but after starting this log I was hit with a wave of apathy. However, with my friend and I resuming actually playing 40k again, I've been hit with a desire to get gak done.

First up, I added a layer of Hawk Turqoise to the armour to get it looking blue. Second, I started getting better at painting dirty red (turqoise not shown in this model).

Third, I finished my first full unit, a group of Hormagaunts.

Other progress - I actually magnetized my Carnifex, and bought a couple of Finecast Zoanthropes.

Looking good, what model is the big winged one? Looks like a queen alien with big 'ol wings.

Looking good here, Loki.

Don't walk towards the apathy light! Don't do it!

I like the blue hashing you did on the carapace, it has a good, organic feel. I think a little more is needed on the bigger back plates, though. Not all the way, of course, just enough to bring it out as a primary color in your scheme and get rid of some of that black.

Keep it up! (No apathy allowed!)

I already have made a change to the carapace - as I mentioned, I've added a second highlight of Hawk Turqoise - you can sort of see it in the Hormagaunt group shot.

So, it's been a while since I made up update. Not a huge one, since, well, my painting pace is slow at best.

3 Tyranid Warriors are done.

Zoanthrope in progress.

I've also been working on something different - I've been testing methods of painting bone that I can do relatively quickly, so I can get cracking on my Vampire Counts. I think I found a result I like.

Hey! Good to hear from you!

Good work on the zoanthrope! My only CC would be a highlight on the brain back there.

Keep up the good work!

I was going to highlight the brain more with Warlock purple, but the model had been on my desk far too long and I needed to get moving on other stuff. I might revisit it when I do my second Zoanthrope.

I was going to get 5 Gargoyles finished this weekend, but I still needed to prime the arms, and it was raining all weekend. I managed to prime them at the end of the weekend, but didn't get any serious work done on the arms. Instead I moved on to other models. Namely, a Hive Guard and a couple of Termagants.

I'm really happy with the Hive Guard except for the claws. This shot is a couple of hours old, and the main body is basically finished. The claws are done with the turquise highlight I give the carapace and non-weapon claws, but I might redo them with the grey I use for weapons to break the model up a bit.

Another thing I should mention is I'm moving from GW to Vallejo paints for everything except foundations and washes. This is my first significant model done with Bloody Red instead of Blood Red, and I like it far more. It's slightly less orange than Blood Red, and I hope the colour difference isn't noticeable on the table, but it goes on smoother than Blood Red and the end result is a lot nicer.

Termagant 1 (I did two, but the other strangely looks the same! so I didn't take a shot)

Nice color choices. This army is going to look great on the battlefield.

Took me a few days to figure out how to break up the monotony on the Impaler Cannon, then I thought 'well, I haven't painted any guns with visible ammo yet, so bone ammo!'.

If anyone is interested, progress. I'm annoyed at the turqoise highlighting being washed out in these shots. Contemplating what to do now - finish up my last 5 Termagants ot start on the last 5 Gargoyles. Probably Termagants, they're very close to being finished.

Carnifex main body is about done. I attempted to do the tail in bone, but it didn't work out, so I repainted it black and will be finishing it up tonight.

5 Gargoyles totally finished minus Dullcote. Very happy with these guys.

I dont like Behemoth color scheme, but kudos on sticking to a hard color. I would never try GW red scheme.

Brown wings is about the only thing I could find that I liked. No other colours I tried worked with the dirty red I'm doing. It looks better in person than these shots, more leathery, which is what I was going for.

@Lunahound - you mean as in using GW paint for red? I don't. I use Vallejo Bloody Red.

Carnifex done aside from the 2 back arms. It's magnetised, with another pair of Scything Talons and a Stranglethorn Cannon being worked on. I also have a pair of Devourers magnetised, but I don't want to touch them until I get another pair.

Infinity

Some of the Infinity stuff I've been working on. First Ghulam finished, second on the way. I don't paint fast enough for two logs, so I'll combine them.

It should be noted that this is the first time in over 10 years I've tried painting skin and eyes. And the first time in over 5 years I've painted something not a Tyranid and not a ridiculously easy VC Skeleton.

I'm sticking mostly with the default colours, because I actually like them, though they're being dirtied up a little.

More Infinity! I also figured out how to turn on macro made, so closer pictures. Which mostly just shows the flaws. Oh well.

My second Ghulam is done except for the eyes (because lately I haven't been able to paint them at all).

Also, my WIP Doctor. I wanted to try a different skin tone and hair colour. I just realized I'm basically painting Rihanna. Oh well, not going to change it now.

Looking good so far!

Incidentally, here's my recipe for painting red Tyranid flesh with GW paints.

Step 1: Basecoat with a solid coat of Scab Red (now Khorne Red)

Step 2: Shade with the wash/shade of your choice. I use Thraka Green/Biel-Tan Green for mine, but it would just as easily work with blue or purple.

Step 3: Layer on a mixture of Red Gore/Wazdakka Red and Blood Red/Evil Sunz Scarlet.

Step 4: Highlight with Blood Red/Evil Sunz Scarlet, blending a little as you go.

I like my method (prime army painter pure red, devlan mud, layer up vallejo bloody red). Gives them a kind of dirty look and still well defines the model.

Not sure how Agrax is going to substitue though. I didn't like how it worked when I tested it on a skeleton. Might go with army painters warpaints washes.

Oh I wasn't suggesting you change your method, oh no, I love your army. I just thought you might be interested.

Totally understand getting sick of painting the same thing over and over. One of the reasons I love Infnity. Less guys in the whole army and even within that army they don't need to be painted all the same.

More Doctor.

I'm happy with how this is coming along. I haven't touched the skin yet, but the eyes have been giving me trouble. With such dark skin, you can't make a mistake on the eyes.
