So Love my army. AoA . But getting a little tired of painting white armor. So my question is. How does everyone feel about mixing Chapters and Successor chapters. I would really like to paint some Guardian of the Covenant figures (say a unit or two) without starting an entire new army. Is there a precedent for this? Is it Legal? What if your opponent showed up with an army like that?
Here's the thing. I'm only talking about keeping it in the Codex. Not Mixing Codex. So like Dark angels and Angels of absolution kind of thing. Kind of like allies but not. Keeping it in the Chapter.

There's some bit of precedence, I imagine. After all, the inner circles of the Unforgiven are in near-constant contact, so a joint task-force doesn't seem to strange.

Nothing in the rules against doing such things, the paint scheme is irrelivant really (except possibly when dealing with an Orks 'red paint job'), you are free to do whatever you want, you can have them all random colours if you wish.
I actually quite like the idea (especially when dealing with Dark Angel successors since they're closely linked anyway) of a combned force of connected chapters.

Chapters fight side by side all the time, especially those that share primarch heritage.
As long as they all follow the codex its all perfectly fine.

My Guard army has Cadians, Catachans, and Steel Legion in it. You should be fine! Just let your opponent know what's up so they don't think your Marines in X paint scheme are elites or whatever.

I've been planning on getting a couple of units from other chapters into my army just to make it look like they were helping out eachother on a mission or something.

Of course it makes sense. When there are a bunch of BDSM clowns doing Olympic gymnast routines throughout your unit, while also cutting off heads, you tend to get a bit distracted.

Deathwatch works great for this.
Mixing and matching marines doesn't really matter though; as long as in a normal game you aren't using 4 diff codex in your army on one force org.

It generally looks better if you keep cool colours with cool colours and hot colours with hot colours.

Paint them any colour you like that.
That said, it's much harder to make non-uniform colours look good.

You could call it a Rogue Trader military detachment with various squads from different chapters.
You could even do things like a 5 man devastator squad painted with Long Fang markings. Or a Blood Angels assault squad. As long as they are abiding by the rules of the codex (no split fire or cheap weapons, no meltaguns or infernus pistols) then there shouldn't be a problem.

I find passive aggressive messages in people's signatures quite amusing. |

As long as your army is selected from a single Codex, you can do whatever you want with it. I got into 40K in the 2ed times, when 'Crusade' armies made up of multiple Marine chapters' units were showcased in White Dwarf. An attached unit from another Chapter will look great, especially if you bring elements from your fluff explanation into the hobbycraft. Perhaps give them the same Campaign markings as your army, marking them as part of a cohesive force?

Yep, I remember the crusade armies too. My random Blood Angel successors are slowly going to be transformed into Flesh Tearers so it'll be a mixed look for awhile. I'm also feeling an urge to paint up a Crimson Fist detachment around my Black Reach tactical marines too though so I might end up with two marine armies
