Here's another instance of me treating a non-mini as a mini. Hope you like it:

Very very nice. I've had something like this in mind for a C'tan nightbringer I have kicking around. Would it be ok if I copy your scheme. Is it warlock purple with a touch of red for the red-purple bits?

I once saw a Nighbringer with a starscape pattern on him. It looked really good.

I was using P3 paints, so your colors aren't the same as mine. For the starscape background, I mixed black with a deep blue (P3 Exile Blue). Mostly, the backdrop needs to have some subtle differences showing up- the kind you see in the night sky even on a clear night.

The highlighting was done in Sanguine Highlight- which is a magenta color. I tried to keep this centered on the folds in the fabric so as not to distract from the starscape pattern.

I really want to paint another fairy like this. She'd be a wonderful candidate for translucent cloth.

I really like the dress. It is very subtly done, which actually makes the look far more convincing and realistic. Well done.

Some people were asking me about how I painted her skin, so here is a write up on painting more complex skin tones.

The mini itself is from the Fairy Society- they make ornaments for people's shelves.

She came pre-painted- poorly. So I sprayed her with some primer and got to work doing it right.

My brain is getting a little confused by the lighting. How much of the flesh looks the way it does because of highlighting, and how much of it is because of the lighting?

Because if it's all highlighting, and you've created a way to make skin look like it's glowing just with paint, you are officially a deity.

What do you mean a "non-mini"?

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

When people ask, "What's the point in understanding everything?" they've just disqualified themselves from using questions and should disappear in a puff of paradox. But they don't understand and just continue existing, which are also their only two strategies for life.

Well, the skin really looks like that in person, so... I guess you can worship me?

Really, there's a glare on the dress because of the way the paint had a little sheem in its finish, but the skin itself wasn't affected all that much. The one shoulder isn't really so much brighter than the other one, so if that's all that you're talking about, then I guess my wife gets the credit.

I did a write up on how I paint complicated skin tones. The trick on her was that because she has such large areas of skin to work with, there needs to be a very subtle contrast between the darker and light areas, so there was a need for a many layered method. So the trick is to have a lot of contrast but also use tons of layers to make it really smooth. Other than that, it is all about figuring out where exactly to put the highlights (which is part practice).

She really makes me want to try out repainting other figures from the Fairy Society line. One thing I'd like to do is a translucent dress, and another thing I'd love to try is an African skin tone. I wonder how many of these fairies I'll end up painting.

I mean that this figure was meant as a dust collector- it is just a statue meant to be set on a shelf. She came pre-painted (not in a particularly detailed way). They're sold in gift stores to people who have never heard of miniatures games, and wouldn't think to paint it themselves. These statues are pretty much always less detailed than something similar that you would pick up from a game store, but they also cost quite a bit less.

I've repainted a number of different gift store dust collectors now, including a few Dragons.
