You can use pretty much any black primer spray. B&Q probably has a few, as do automotive shops.
Just shake it well, use light passes and test it out on some sprue first.

I've used those before - they are OK. You need to really shake them up and use in light passes but they get the job done. The price also reflects that you get a fair bit of spray per can
Come in a range of colours as well.
If you want "modeling" sprays, Maelstrom carry a few different brands.
I should also point out that the chaos black spray from GW is not a primer.

I use army painter colours, just because they are avaliable and funky and i;m lazy, for example, i use brown for my catachans, green for orks etc
(means you can paint orks in like 3 coats Spray-> cloth-> wash)

I like Army Painter spray color primer as well...it is a primer + base coat in one spray can, goes on light and looks decent as a base color.

Yes, you are correct in your assumption. Although the term "base coat" typically refers to the first coat of color applied over the primer coat. At least in this hobby, anyway.

In the UK I use Plasti-kote Primer Super in medium grey. Rust-oleum works well too.
I don't know if GW's Chaos Black is a real primer or just a black paint.
There are various spray primers available. Go and look at B&Q's web site.

A) Just black paint, B) rubs off in your hands very easily, C) STUPIDLY over-priced ($15 per can in the US).

I’m a fan of Dupli-Color I’ve used their gray which is offered in a light and dark…. The light is very close to GW Codex gray and the dark is very close to Adeptus.
I also swear by their Self-Etching primer for metal mini’s
I’ve used Army Painter as well with much luck… but our gaming store doesn’t stock it all the time.
GW works, costs a lot and I keep a can or two handy….It’s good for the Templar, matching tanks to troops but If I had to I would use Dupli-Color and Army Painter before GW….
Dupli-Color also has a black primer but to me it goes on to thick so I stay away from it.

If you are still looking for primer then Halfords do a pretty nice matt black primer. Used it on the majority of my chaos and all of my high elves.
Plus my bro works there so discount ftw

It actually works pretty well, even the gloss black works well but requires longer to dry.

yeh it does , i got one of my spare mantic dwarfs painted up before and it works quite well.
Bit annoyed that i could only get grey primer as it puts me off as its quite like the colour of the sprue but i geuss i can live with that for £1 pound for 300ml.

You could always try the halfords primer, 500ml for £7 compared to GWs 400ml for £8.20. I plan on stickin with Halfords primer purely because its a matt black and not gloss, its a proper primer and it cheaper lol.
