Subject: Codex Angry Marines - 5th Edition Redux
|

For about a month now I have been working on a version of Codex Angry Marines more compatable with 5th Ed and capable of going toe to toe with other armies.
Now that most of the basics and such have been covered, is there anything that you consider vital to a new Codex Angry Marines? If so, now is the time that I take your opinions on board. As a point of information, the codex is heavily based on Codex Space Marines and the previous Codex Angry Marines. It just has a lot more assault cannons.
Also, any art or quotes will be appreciated.
Here is the current army list, but wargear, stats etc. are going to be kept secret for now:
HQ: Special Characters, Angry Captain, Angry Librarian, Angry Chaplain,
Elites: Terminators, Belligerent Engines (dreadnaught), Black Brothers (sort of like the death company on fire), Indomitables (Sternguard), Techmarine, Scouts, Beserk Marines.
Troops: Angry Marines, Assault Marines
Fast Attack: Really Angry Marines (Vanguard), Land Speeder, Angry Bikies, Angrier Bikies, Land Speeder Storm, Scout Bikies,
Heavy Support: Devastators, Thunderfire cannons (but these will be removed if not popular), Land Raider, Land Raider Iratus, Land Raider Redeemer, Predator, Predator Angrinor, Predator Iratus, Whirlwind, Vindicator.
You can try to coax rules out of me, but I'm only going to say this:
Angry Marines can throw CC weapons
Powerfeet are back and better than ever before
So, your requests and opinions, ladies and gentlemen.

Sub in different words for "angry" X, "angry Y" etc - too overused imho. Makes the units sound samey and uninspired.

It simply mimics GW's naming policy for Blood Angels (Blood X) and Grey Knights (Nemesis X).

Granted but since the Angry marines have a comedic value all their own, why not make it as broad and interesting as possible?

At the moment, Angry is just a stand in for a real description.
For example, the current shortlist for Chaplains:

Chapter Master: TEMPERUS MAXMUS (name can only be written in block capitals, father of rage was already his description)
1st Company commander: Captain Krunch (as in crunch there go my bones) has powerfeet, power fists and a powerhead
Chief Librarian: [Insert name here] Master of Mindfuckery
Master Chaplain: [insert name here] Master of Expletives
Captain: unnamed
Librarians: brain punchers, head twisters, headbangers.
Chaplain: see above
Terminators: unnamed.
Sternguard: Irritables
Dreadnaughts: Black Engine (dreadnaught on fire), Belligerent Engine, Engine of Rage, Stompinator (powefeet)
Techmarines: unnamed, possibly tincan marines
Scouts: unnamed (I like ragelings though, nice suggestion)
Angry marines: Angry Marines
Rhino: Road Rager
Razorback: Mancrusher
Drop Pod: Debris (angry marines dont wait for the drop pod to reach the ground)
Assault Marines: unnamed
Vanguard: Really Angry Marines
Land Speeders: unnamed
Angry Bikies: attack bike unnamed
Devastators: Irritators, can take the ICBM launcher.
Thunderfire: unnamed
Land Raider: Land raider, description change only.
Land Raider Iratus: Angry marines only land raider.
Land raider redeemer: Land raider Vindaloo, land raider Infernus
ICBM's: Inter-Continental-Ballistic-Marines
Predator Angrinor
And More!
You're suggestions are appreciated and I will include them.
I am actually looking more for wargear ideas, new squads, art, rules for Commissar Fuklaw and other rules and fluff suggestions.
Note: I am named after TEMPERUS MAXIMUS, I am not naming him after me. Automatically Appended Next Post: Also, I'm giving Bikies "training wheels" i.e. two wheels out the side, COVERED IN SPIKES! Added onto the frontal painwheel (S4 AP- hit to anyone they drive into, including assault) this could make a convincing unit. The bikies don't get bolters, but get 2 Wrenches.
Wrenches are a throwable close combat weapon in use throughout most of the army's assault specialists. They range from the simple wrench past the librarian's force wrench to the almighty Thunder Wrench... Tanks beware.
Wrenches can be picked up by assaulting or having them thrown back at you by the enemy.
The average Angry Marine also has 2 A, Ld 7 and BS 3. So there's my first info release for your critique.

Well, bad news for you, not even a single powerfist in the codex. I don't think they're angry enough. Who wants a slow fist shaped power weapon when you can have a slow fist shaped power weapon that rolls 2D6 armour penetration on vehicles. That's right, it's chainfist time!
Really though, I started this thread to share some of the more radical ideas I've had. Balancing issues come in here, so without further ado:
Land Raider Iratus: you may have noticed Angry Marines have no Land Raider Crusader. The Iratus is the equivalent, but with 2 twin linked assault cannons on each sponson, frag launchers, a pintel mounted twin linked assault cannon and your choice of a; Heavy bolter, Missile Launcher, another Assault Cannon, Multi-Melta. My main worry is that the assault cannons can reliably take out Monoliths with sheer weight of fire, regardless of whatever point value I assign it.
Black Engine: Dreadnaught with 2 CC weapons, each with a heavy flamer, and deals a S4 hit to any unit in contact with it from its burning braziers. No real upgrades.
Doom Machine: 1 per army Black Engine with 4 CC weapons, 2 Heavy Flamers and 12/12/12 armour. The design is basically a four sided dreadnaught with a CC weapon on each side that sort of spins around on 2 legs.
That's my first 2. Tomorrow, I'm discussing powerfeet.

The Doom Machine sounds absolutely insane, in a good way.
The land raider iratus I'm a bit torn on. Excessive force is certainly the whole point of the angry marines, but all those assault cannons does seem to be taking it a bit far. Maybe make it more like a terminus ultra with no transport capacity, because of all the ammo?

I'd recommend going to 1d4chan's wikipage on Angry-Marines so you can get a good feel of the fluff that the internet has made for them (I'll warn you the site is NSWF)
The Angry Marines Detest any amount of weapons, as such, almost all of them are horrible shots (think Ork shooting). As such, focus on melee weapons in the armory. . . ill try to list the ones i can remember from the old Angry Codex
Bat, Club, Blunt object, Head, Gaurdsman - Close Combat Weapon. Not a Gaurdsman close combat weapon, a living gaurdsman AS a close combat weapon
Power Bat, Thunder Wrench - Power-sword and Thunder-hammer respectivly. . . the wrench gave a bonus to 'WORK D&^@ YOU!!' rolls, which was the Angry Equivilent of 'Blessing of the Omnissaiah'
All of the above could be dual weilded, more often than not, there are no Guns being used by Angry Marines.
Power-Feet - essentially made the Marine count as a jetbike
Banner of F&^% You - Two Handed Power-Weapon adds to STR, functions as Chapter Standard
There was also the Banner of Hatred against Furries, Weaboos, Emos, and Goths. Which gave Preffered enemy and Rage against Tyranids, Eldar, Tau, Dark Eldar, CSM, and Pretty Marines. Also a Two handed power-weapon that added to STR
They LOVE anything that get get them in punching range faster, though hate vehicles that are bogged down by useless things such as brakes, or seatbelts. . . or even roofs. I'd add the abbility to buy open-topped, or boarding ramps and the like. Also; The Preditor Angrinator. . . which was a preditor that fired Angry-Marines. Rules wise, there was an assault squad that had to be bought with it, and could be fired from its main gun, they did scatter, when they landed they counted as deep-striking, but if they hit a enemy unit, they counted as assaulting for that turn.
I do remember the standard core abilities of a few units getting renamed
And they shall know no fear i think was changed to And They Shall Always Be Angry, which did the same thing, but gave an Army-Wide Furious Charge
Captain got "HE'S F*&^ING ANGRY"
Chaplain got "HE'S F*&^ING HOLY"
Librarian got "HE'S F*&^ING CRAZY", also the Master of Mind&^%#ery was an upgrade for librarians.
Tech-Marine got "WORK D&^@ YOU!!" as Blessing of the Omnissaiah. Couldnt Take Servitors. . . not Angry Enough.
All Regular Angry Marines, and 'initiates' had a Mandatory Rage USR, having a Veteran SGT (AKA baby sitter) removed rage.
Power of the ANGRY machine spirit. Had a BS of 1, but got a bonus to Ram/Tank-Shock. The Vehicle with the PotAMS ITSELF had rage (even empty, it had to run over or ram the nearest living non-angry thing)
Devistator Marines where Angry at the fact that they couldnt charge in and hit everything, they could fire their weapons as Assault, bit fired at one less BS.
Angry Marines dont have Scouts, they feel they arent Angry enough. As such, they are a lot like Black Templars when it comes to new recruits.
They do have a Commisar, Commisar Fuklaw, who is just as angry as any angry marine. He counted as a Commisar Lord with Carapace Armor.
Had a special character that ripped the Claws of a Chaos Dreadnaught, they are counts-as for the Gloves of Ultramar
They Hate the Ultramarines, so they might be the Gloves of Ultramar.
TEMPERUS MAXIMUS once sent a Hive-Tyrant's head to Marneus Calgar. . . Just to piss him off. They did fight afterwards.
Their main Ship is the Litany of Litany's Litany.

Most of that is at least partially accurate.
I also suggest the addition of Commissar Dan and his pet Basilisk, 'Fluffy'. New recruits are generally given a speech about no longer getting to play 'poke and joke' in the woods, then given the keys to the heavy weapons and told to go nuts. So scouts ought to be the heavy weapon guys.

So much misinformation here it hurts my brain.
Angry Marines line powerfists, end of story.
Angry Marine Bikes and vehicles have heavy bolters and pintle mounted flamers because twin linked boltguns and storm bolters suck
They do have scouts. They borrow them from the Mentor chapter. These scouts do not have access to heavy bolters because those are all on the bikes.
Beligerent Engines have heavy bolters and plasma cannons. And that is usuallt good enough. Flamers however would also be cool.

The terminus Ultra was my inspiration, and I'm trying to keep the theme.
Anidem, I kind of already did my research. I now know the old Codex Angry Marines like the back of my hand.
Commissar Fuklaw is a definite addition, and I'm working on a Basilisk charge rule.
Bikes WILL have painwheels, I DON'T CARE WHAT THEY HAD BEFORE.
Chapter Relics such as the Adamantine sack of power doorknobs, Rip n' Tear, The staff of unmitigated fury towards furries, spess elfs and weeaboos etc. will be available. Some are currently special character specific, whilst others (such as the fabled Blade of Anger) are available for basic characters and even possibly sergeants.
Give the dreds nothing but CC.
Also, give them inferno grenades. It just sounds angry.
Also, make it three flamers to a squad, one a heavy flamer.
Also, give them rules to make them resistant to fire.
Also, give them an elite unit called RAAAAAAAGE marines that is basically a vanguard squad, w/o jet packs, but with +1 WS, +1A, +1 I and +1T since they are to angry to feel pain.
Also, Give the Brusiarch a crozius that is a combi-flamer too.
Also, give them suicide units. A unit that is 1 model strong, very hard to shoot up, and self destructs with a STR8 AP4 large pie plate when it gets into assault.
Some dreads can have range weapons, but as a rule you'll just take 2 CC weapons (4 if you're an Doom Machine).
No inferno grenades as yet, but instead of smoke launchers on vehicles they get frag launchers (1 shot S4 AP5 blast)
If I add any more Flamers or Assault Cannons to the codex it will be unstoppable.
Also, give them rules to make them resistant to fire.
See Black Brothers
I like suicide marines, but may not include them.
Black brothers each have flamer-fists (take a guess what those are), so why do the chaplains need them? Chaplains can give a yell so loud it intimidates even Orks. As a result the can cancel a single unit within 2D6" havin a Waaagh, or alternatively give themselves Waaagh if there are no nearby Orks.
Ork Waaagh: WAAAAAAGGGHHHHH!!!
Angry Marine Equivalent: YAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And then there's Beserk Marines (WS4 BS0 S4 T4 W2 I5 Fearless Armourless marines with D6 attacks each and FNP). Its not all bad news for non-angry marines though; if they assault once they get Rage, if they do not assault they inflict 2D6 hits on each other.
When I get to fluff I want a story about angry marines being briefed on a swarmlord before going and killing it, along with every other Tyranid on the planet. "TYRANID? IT TASTED LIKE FREE RANGE CHICKEN!" - Sergeant KILLDEATH after singlehandedly disemboweling a Hierophant with his teeth (his arms and legs were busy stabbing a carnifex to death)

Another idea for the chaplain is give him two crozius and give him the ability to throw one of them, leaving him with one weapon after. Count it as a BS5 shot at whatever strength his crozius blow would have inflicted in a melee.

Armoury:
Power Feet: Counts as a twin set of power fists, but grants +2 attacks (2 Power Feet for +1 attack, and a weapon in each hand for an extra +1). Makes model count as always moving through difficult terrain.
Power Bat: Power weapon.
Power Bat with a Nail in it: Power weapon with +1S
Power Wrench: Power Weapon, adds 2 to repair roles by a Swearsmith (as they can't take servitors)
Power Sack of Door Knobs: Power weapon, +d6 attacks. Roll of a one hits self and gets no attacks.
Angry Banner: Power weapon, count as scoring +1 wounds for determining assault result. Enemy at -2LD if they lose combat as the banner is jammed in their fallen comrade's somewhere he doesn't want it jammed.
Hate Fist: Power fist, but causes two wounds as you tear two important things off the enemy. Can only happen once per enemy model.
Unnecessary Chainblade Attachment: Master crafts a chain weapon.
Dreadnought Close Combat weapons are usable by infantry.
Twin Bolt Pistols: 12" S4 Assault 2 Twin Linked. +1 Attack in Close Combat but cannot use other special weapons. +1LD for being badass.
Angry Flamer (two flamers strapped together): S4 AP5 Template Twin Linked.
etc

Angry Flamer (two flamers strapped together): S4 AP5 Template Twin Linked.
etc
Well, those are some ideas, but here is my wargear page 1:
Bat: CC weapon
Power bat: power weapon
Thunder bat: Thunder Hammer
Force bat: Force weapon
Wrench: Angry marines often carry pieces of dense metal, which is used to beat their enemies to death and occasionally thrown. A model with a Wrench has a CC weapon, a power wrench is a power weapon etc.
A wrench can also be thrown, with the following profile:
Range Strength AP Special
Wrench 6” S – 1 - Assault 1
Power Wrench 6” S – 1 2 Assault 1
Thunder Wrench S + 1” 2S – 2 2 Assault 1, Thundersmash.
Force Wrench 2D6” S – 1 2 Assault 1, Force
If a model throws a wrench, it loses the use of the weapon until the target unit is either:
• Charged by the wrench users or…
• The wrench’s owner moves within 1” of the wrench or…
• The enemy throws it back.
If the target is charged by the wrenches owners in the assault phase directly after they throw it, the unit reclaims the wrench, but loses their charging attack.
If the target is not charged they may either throw all the wrenches back (if there are enough models), or ignore them. In such a case place a marker to show where the wrenches are. The angry marines may reclaim their wrenches by moving within 1” of the marker.
Force wrenches may only be used by Psykers.
If a unit wishes to use a thunder wrench then they must remain stationary in the move phase, then in the shoot phase, you needn’t roll to hit. The thunder wrench moves the full distance in a nominated direction of your choice, inflicting a hit on any models between its user and itself. At its destination it then inflicts a hit on any model in a small blast radius.
Powerfeet: These are potent powerfists, attached to the feet, duh. Powerfeet count as a pair of powerfists, give +1 attack for charging (on top of the initial +1) due to sheer mass. Models in powerfeet ignore and destroy area terrain, and make the wearer Slow and Purposeful.
Power Head: gives a 4+ invulnerable save.
Angry Marine Launcher: Heavy weapon that fires Angry Marines with Battle Bats.
Inter-Continental-Ballistic-Marines: see Predator Angrinor.
Painwheel: inflicts a S4 AP- hit on anyone moved into or through
Wheel o’ Death: inflicts 2 S6 AP- hits on anyone moved into or through
Training Wheels: painwheel or wheel o’ death wounds cause an additional wound.
Angry Bike: Bike with a painwheel
Rocket Engines: Unit count as Jetbikes, but lose painwheels/Wheels o’ Death.
Angry Marines Special Rules (not all apply to all marines):
And They Shall Be Angry!:
Angry Marines automatically pass tests to regroup, and MUST take such tests even if reduced below half strength, though all other criteria applies. If Angry Marines are caught in a sweeping advance they are not destroyed and will continue to fight, but having shamed themselves by running like little girls may no longer use the Semper Iratus special rule.
Semper Iratus:
Angry Marines are a raucous lot, tending to make a heck of a lot of noise. This is incredibly fulfilling to the Angry Marines, and extremely demoralising to their enemies. During combat resolution the effect of their heavy swearing gives them +1 to their combat resolution. This stacks if multiple units with Semper Iratus are involved in one combat then the extra 1 can be added to a maximum of 3.
Only the Angriest:
Angry Marines may not use servitors, as they are not angry enough.
An Angry Marines army may not take choices from Codex Space Marines (and all sub-codices), Codex Imperial Guard or Codex Grey Knights as ‘allies’ as they regard their brethren as weak willed bullet magnets. Angry Marines may never play on the same side as ‘Pretty Marines’. NEVER!!!!!!!!!!
Preferred Enemy:
It is a well-known fact that angry marines hate anything pink. What’s pink? Slaanesh. ALL Angry Marines therefore have preferred enemy against any Slaaneshi model or model with mark of Slaanesh. As this rule is universal it is not shown in the profiles.
Move Through Cover:
This Represents the Angry Marines simply smashing their way through anything (including small children) in their rush to close with the enemy.
Combat Squads:
Angry Marines may not use combat squads, as they firmly believe “The more, the angrier”
Too Angry to Die: Eternal Warrior, but if the model would suffer instant death from a close combat attack then he gains preferred enemy against that single model only.
Terminator Sergeants: Angry Marine Sergeants sometimes take a suit of terminator armour. If so the sergeant may ride a transport as two models, and can be targeted in close combat, unless the squad also wears terminator armour.
And the Angry Marines Psychic Powers:
The Litany of Litany’s Litany: This Power can be used in the shooting phase, but does not count as firing a weapon. The Librarian targets an enemy unit within 24” and makes a psychic test. If passed the enemy must take a pinning test at Ld of 3 less than usual (to a minimum of 1). A Librarian who uses this power may not run or fleet, but can fire another weapon.
Avatar of Anger: This power is used at the beginning of the Angry Marines’ turn before any other psychic power. If the psychic test is successful, the librarian is transformed for the rest of the turn into a monstrous embodiment of pure anger. The Librarian becomes a monstrous creature with strength 6 and cannot fire weapons, loses Wargear for the turn or use psychic powers. In assault, any to hit roll of a 1 causes an automatic hit on the closest, largest friendly model in the assault. If no such model is available then the attack simply misses.
GRAAAAAARRRRRGGGGHHH!!!!!!!!!!!: This power is a psychic shooting attack with the following profile and counts as firing a weapon:
Range S AP Type
Template 5 3 Assault 1
Safety is For Pussies: This power is used at the start of the Angry Marines’ turn. If successful, the librarian and his squad become fleet, and receive +2 Initiative. They may not take cover saves next turn and if using assault grenades take D6 S4 hits.
Spell of Eternal Ass-Whooping: This power is a psychic shooting attack with the following profile:
Range S AP Type
12” 10 1 Heavy 1, Blast
If the librarian fails the psychic test to use this spell then place the vortex over the librarian. It will not scatter.
