Subject: Selling models on E-Bay - hwo much to charge? where to start? what is Pro Painted?!

OK,
I am looking to sell off my Crimson Fists army (i just dont like playing SM for some reason). I have never sold any of my models and have no idea what sort of quality the painting is or how much i coudl charge for my stuff.
I remember someone tellign me in the past that the normal is retail-20%, but is that if themodel is painted? What about extra bits or conversions?
I've been looking on ebay and a lot of auctions state they are "Pro Painted"....what is a Pro Painter? I would assume mine are just table top quality and a Pro Painter would be someone of 'Eavy Metal standard or higher....but some of the "Pro Painted" auctions are nothing special at all.
Any advicce would be very much appreciated.
Here is a link to my Crimson Fists Gallery so you can assess how good/bad the models in question are. All the models are stock except for the Sterguard squad which includes the metal Fist backpacks and shoulder pads, as well as metal Deathwatch shoulder pads and guns.
http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/images-23257-14856_Crimson%20Fists.html
So to re-cap, i woudl love some advice on how much you, my fellow Dakkaites, think i could realistically charge for the models on Ebay.
Thanks in advance.

You misunderstand the definition of the word 'professional', as do many people, which is exactly why the word is used. If you're doing it for a buck it's a professional painting venture.

Ah, so the people that say "Pro Painted" are actually people who are painting with the express intent of selling on the painted minis. Gotcha.

Most of the people i know , and including myself , see "pro painted" as something supposedly done by a pro.
And by pro that means someone with the know hows and the experience to produce quality work.
Unfortunately thats not a case anymore , its been over used by people desperate to attract more viewers,
and when i see an auction with such claims , i would never bother to buy from them again. I see it as false advertisement on purpose.
More harshly, a scam.
You misunderstand the definition of the word 'professional', as do many people, which is exactly why the word is used. If you're doing it for a buck it's a professional painting venture.
I agree too, but we are forgetting one thing though that contributes to the misunderstanding. If we think someone is professional ( as their work ) we expect them to get better from it... supposedly, but which is mostly not the case
unfortunately.
Now onto pricing your work.
-They are good for table top , which is already a plus.
-They are neatly painted and not thick either , another plus. Because anyone interested on doing additional work on them, after purchasing , can easily do so.
-The conversions are subtle, which is good. It wouldnt stick out like a sorethumb to let people know its different armies ( if the buyer decide to purchase as addition to add to their current force )
-Extra bits used, will people dish out more? Its hard to say as beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Some may appreciate it , some may not. Unless they are very well done to look almost like individual dioramas,
i dont see it been cost effective or be appreciated. Or to be justified by the customer.
How much will people pay? Again hard to say , are you planning to sell them as whole , or in units?
I have been watching warhammer ebay as a sort of hobby, and the worth or miniatures ( and especially used ) miniature has plummeted alot...
Whole armies that have been painted with higher standards ( than yours ) have been sold at retail price.... of their unpainted counterparts.
With only extremely nice armies ( heavy metal ish ) been sold at higher price as a form of collection.
Right now, its a bad time to make money out of miniatures...
And if you do however decide to give it a shot , please remember what im about to tell you.
Allow people outside of USA to purchase. I know the shipping is a little higher ( $5-$10 more at most )
BUT, because of pricing difference and exchange rates, you'll pretty much get 5x the amount of customers atleast, than sticking with continental US only.
Hope this helps.

Outside of the USA wont be a problem. I'm in the UK.
I wasn't sure to sell the army as a whole or put it in lots of individual units. i am tempted to go by units as then i can put a pic of every single unit on the auction. i think you are limited to a certain number of pics per auction so if i sold it as a full army then soem units wouldnt get pics, wouldn't be fair the to person buying them. i think they have a right to get a good look at what they are buying.

Are the models in the gallery the only ones to be sold or have you more units for sale

I almost expelled my coffee out from my mouth when i saw that.
I take back EVERYTHING i said about selling out of the country lol...
Because i dont know how different it is shipping rate is from UK to US, compared to Canada, but i know it costs like $45 to ship.... $ 90 for express.
There is NO WAY you can do that effectively if thats how much the shipping costs @_@
I was going to suggest sell seperately since the chance of a buyer needing every unit ur selling in 1 whole army is slim to none, it'll just drag down the amount they are willing to pay
( to balance out what they dont need )
Which again, will hurt tons due to shipping costs.

@ Brennian: This is why i'm asking for advice. I dont want to charge too high but also dont want to shoot myself in the foot.
Models that arent pictured are:
1) The remaining models from the Company Command squad (one with a storm bolter and one with a flamer i think).
2) 2 Drop Pods
3) AOBR Dread
i think that's it.

Maybe figure these out first.
How much does it cost to ship to Australia and N.America per squad , and then per army.
Because THEY are the ones that will pay you extras , guaranteed.

Good advice. I will weight them out tonight and check the prices online.
I guess N America and Australia pay over the odds for GW stuff anyway, so as long i undercut plu GW shipping that i stand a chance.

I will check the prices when i finish work (which wont be until abotu midnight GMT, workgin 2 jobs sucks). I will check the prices and send the PM off tomorrow if you like.
probably worth pointing out that the turret on the Razorback is not glued down so is removable. Also the sponsons on the Pred are magnetized and the tank would be be sold including interchangable and fully painted Heavy Bolter sponsons as well.

OK, been looking aroudn Ebay. Woudl you guys think this is fair for the Tactical Squads?
Start the auction with a min bid of £15.00 and Buy It Now price of £25.00 (plus postage). If that fair or under/overpriced you think? Current retail for a Tac Squad is £23.00

Are you in a rush to sell them atm? If not, i suggest giving swap shop a shot?
You get to see what price range you get , and you wont need to risk chances of low final bids.
Lastly, even though swapshop isnt always safe, you can make it safe.
If the buyer is serious, create an ebay auction for him , with the BiN set up for him ( with discussed price )
now both sides are safer and obligated to follow through.

Not in any real rush but would like to sell them sooner rather than later (the funds might be going towards new necrons when they come out).
They've only even been used in one game and they are just taking up space right now.

One minor note that hasn't popped up, but a lot of the time the paintedness of the models is actually almost irrelevant unless they're painted in a common colour (smurfs, bangels, etc) - because people will buy them, and then... spray 'em black so they can paint them up to match their own army. Of course, sometimes people will buy them because they're the right paint scheme, but that's probably not *that* often. Unless you're selling space wolves, or something.

Unless your base happens to look like the customer's armies bases.
They have to take it off to redo it for it to match their army.
Thats extra work for them , and extra work for you.

And it's a GW chapter rather than a random chapter of your own invention (albeit a rarer one than say, smurfs). Also, you might find one person buys a bunch of your lots and starts their own army using your paint scheme. One of my friends basically did that with his eldar.

I've browsed ebay a lot, and the words "Pro Painted" gets thrown around A LOT.
That being said, you could DEFINITELY consider your stuff Pro Painted. It's clean, crisp, and above tabletop quality. Most of the stuff on ebay listed as "pro painted" is about 6/10 and "master painted" is about 8/10 work.
Your stuff is a solid 7 in my book.

The army is solid table-top quality. I think you could get away with charging 30% off + P&P.
I think you'd also be more successful if you split it into seperate lots rather than getting rid of the entire army at once: many people buy second-hand to strip and re-paint, and no-one will buy a *whole* army just for one or two units.
