I want to put together a nice starting set of terrain for my table. Maybe 20 pieces or so, that way there is variety for my games. I was wondering what would be a good starting list, like bunkers, woods, hills, ammo depots and the like. Ideas?

I'd first grab either the Imperial City or the Imperial fortification sets. lots of building as all wrapped up in one package. When go and find yourself a foam cutter and a nice thick styrofoam cooler. You can make hills, bunkers, wall sections, rubble, all kinds of stuff from cutting up styrofoam. Also, try going to your local hardware supply store and look at the plastic electrical boxes for installing outlets and switches. With a littl ebit of paint, they would look great as bunkers or power centers.

Hills are always good.
Ruins are also good to start with.
Bunkers for learning how the BUILDINGS rules work (they are different from RUINS).
Depends on what army you have though. Eldar (including DE), Tau, Necrons and Tyranids don't have a lot of use for Imperial ruins sets.

Yes, I agree. I am trying to figure out how to build Tau-ish, Eldar-ish, and maybe some Tyranid terrain. Orks are easy, just pile a bunch of junk together, nominate a door, and there you have it!

I think Imperial ruins work for every army in 40k when you consider that the majority of the fighting occurs on an imperial planet somewhere. Tau are probably the only exception to this. If you really want army specific terrain just try and emulate the pictures found in that factions codex. Or just go with generic outdoor areas; deserts/forests/moonscapes.
A good start on the cheep is getting some large blocks of Styrofoam and cutting into different terrain pieces. If you have money to burn feel free to buy GW's gaming table and whatever terrain from them you want. There are also plenty of companies online that you can order terrain or whole tables from. Styrofoam and cardboard are cheapest though.

start with "natural" features, such as hills and trees. Than add "manufactured" terrain such as buildings and fortifications based on the armies you and your common opponents use.

Some model train trees, some stuff to count as hills and other nature like terrain pieces is a great start. From there creating other buildings from scratch is a good way to go, since once you have the easy stuff outta the way you have a basis on how to move on.

So I play Orks and my buddy is SM. I was wondering what kind of buildings would be good for them. For Ork, im looking for stuff like fuel depots, a stronghold, watch tower, mech garage and the like. So any ideas on more that i could make. Most are going to be from scratch, as i dont want to sink lots into the pre made buildings (IE the imperial city buildings and the like)

Like the terrain Kilkrazy. I'm thinking of building a board but don't have a theme for it just yet...
I have a Forum that needs answering here's the link

I have built a couple pieces for fun on any table i'd say the best place to start is a ruined building... why because if you ruin it, theres a 99% chance that it will look better cause... its a ruin. Thats what I built first and its one of my favorite pieces.

Yes. It is fairly easy to make, actually. Automatically Appended Next Post: The Eldar buildings are by Panic.

Looks like yoghurt pots etc, with textured finish? Really effective... How do you transfer the images? they look super crisp and clean
