So Sisters of Battle have been more or less confirmed for a White Dwarf codex around August/September. Necrons are most likely in the pipeline, and the Tau are (I think?) thought to be scheduled for an update before 6th Edition. 6th Edition is forecast to be released next year. Black Templars had an FAQ released recently that largely makes them 5th Edition compliant, and given that there's already three factions on the roster before 6th, it sounds to me like BTs - and of course Dark Angels - aren't likely to see a codex anytime soon, unless they're first out of the gate with 6th, which doesn't seem terribly realistic.

Am I reading that right?

That's how I understand it myself. Though, frankly, I hope for it. I don't want my Templar (Or my Eldar for that matter) getting an update this close to a new edition release, just to be gimped by a new set of rules. Let them be out of date for a bit to get a good grip on 6th edition

During a game today: missed 7/9 TH attacks, picked them up and rolled all hits and my friend just says "you know you're not getting that vow in the next edition?" I laughed and enjoyed it.

No word regarding BT codex, the only things that have been showing up are Sisters, Nercons and Tau.

Part of me looks on excitedly for a new BT codex...part of me fears the idea. I LIKE a lot of what they have already. They may lose out on quite a bit of what makes them fun right now. Or they may get a lot better. It's too early to tell, but I'm hoping the new book keeps the Terminator upgrades, keeps the Holy Hand Grenade, keeps the preferred enemy vows and after that...I think updating them is fair. But all that NEEDS to stay!! Or I'm refusing to play the new codex!

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

I really don't see why Templars would need a new codex. Is there something wrong with having re-rolls across the entire army, Furious Charging Lightning Claw Termies, PotMS Vindicators, and Land Raiders immune to the Lance rule? Is having army-wide Ld10 while your psuedo-Eternal Warrior HQ is alive a handicap? BP/CCW on troops, and Scouts mixed with Power Armor sucks now?

Sure, you've got drawbacks. Your Rhinos are overcosted, and you have to pay for Krak grenades. But honestly, it's a perfectly competitive codex right now. By no means does it actually need a new book.

Actually, if they fixed the costs for Rhinos and Razorbacks, gave us automatic Frag/Krak grenades, I'd be happier than a pig in poo. Wouldn't need a codex update after that. Let us keep our awesome 4th ed codex.

It would be nice to have some things cost adjusted, and have things like grenades and bolters/bolt pistol-CCW at the same time. Even though I'm new, I really like the templars and would hate to see the flavor sucked out of them. I hold hope that they will be one of the first 6th edition armies, and maybe in the boxed set.

I agree, I'd rather wait for 6th than get a 5th ed 'dex that is out of date two months later.

Strongly agree. There is nothing worse than the high of a new competitive codex followed by it's immediate ruination by a new rule set.

Eh. The dark, lurking HeroHammer side of my psyche would really, really enjoy some Thunderlord/Draigo-style HQ units. Helbrecht's LOLworthy, and the only guy who's as good with a sword as a bog-standard Rainbow Marines C:SM Captain is the champ.

Plus, of course, rational transport costs - I'll happily pay 50 for a Rhino if we get Fast, like Blood Angels - and having to pay for every single goddamned piece of gear any unit in any squad wears, ever. Throw frags and kraks in the profile and be done with it.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Onnnnnnnn the other hand...

If/when BTs do get a new codex with some (more) badassery to it, all the guys playing their Blood Angel-red Grey Knights will suddenly become Templars, and I'll have to go play Space Wolves or something.

'Nuf said! Out side of two outdated rules, that were addressed by the FAQ, the codex is fine the way it is. Move on and get higher priority targets, like the Dark Angels!

An assault army that is competetive not because it is good at assaulting but because it is excellent at shooting is kinda weird. You also only listed the advantages, without mentioning stuff like Righteous Zeal messing with morale and every assault unit except terminators and HQs being mediocre in CC. Scouts in tac squads are pretty much rubbish outside of a Black Tide, which isn't that competitive to begin with. While I agree that the book is competitive enough and that we won't need a new book until 6th, the optimal army list for Templars is now completely contrary to the fluff. It's not all roses and kittens.

I can see it now " Black Templars wish they were UltraMarines, and they lose every battle because they don't follow the codex, like the UltraMarines. The Black Templars also do not have access to land raider crusaders, which are now retconned to being invented by the UltraMarines, because they're not UltraMarines.".

Well, better give it to Kelly than I suppose.

Than we'll get Black-claw-wielding, Black-belt-wearing Black Templar Cavalry riding Templar-steeds into battle, preferably under water, scuba-Templar-style, while horny neophites kidnap the Chapter's Thunderhawks for a raunchy night out. We will lern that Helbrecht is "the most intelligent Templar ever", though he still has a healthy inferiority complex as he was always been under-estimated (though we never get to know any specifics or events that would illustrate blatantly expositionary character-writing). The most useful unit in the Codex will obviously be Devastators who can double-tap their heavy weapons at 5 different targets while fleet-charging. Black Templars also get D6 extra HS-slots in the FOC just to be different. The Emperor's Champion meanwhile is sulking away on a super-mysterious Champion-quest in his one private Champion-Dimension with his Champion-Sword that will instigate the end of the universe. On some off-planet, Grimaldus will have defeated a Tyranid Hive Fleet all by himself. Glorious times ahead.

I really don't think they need a new book. They're a good assault army, and the small weaknesses they have can be FAQ'd out just like Dark Angels had. Besides, all they're going to do with a new release is just add more Elite choices and power weapons, like every Space Marine release.

Actually, they're a good gunline army. They're a pretty mediocre assault army.

No, Kelly most definitely wrote the Space Wolves Codex, and the post you quoted was most definitely a riff on the over-the-top nature of that particular book.
