After the recent stunts that GW have pulled in Oz and the Southern Hemisphere, I would be amazed if there were still people willing to pay £30 or whatever it is to go to a GW cheerleading rally, to be perfectly honest.

The whole sorry saga:

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/368570.page

In a nutshell - preventing discount retailers from shipping to Southern Hemisphere, thus ensuring you guys have to pay full GW OZ prices, which are something like double what everyone else pays.

However, since you weren't aware of this, I gather you already buy from GW OZ anyway so it won't make any difference to you (aside from the knowledge that you are being gouged, of course)

I'd imagine Games Day would be a bit like a cult meeting - a whole lot of people fanatically following a leader without question, unaware of the outside world and fearful of all that challenge their perfect leaders.

So... really... a bit like Warseer.

Formerly gamesday consisted of rogue traders for fantasy / 40k. I loved these. It was fun to be able to get 3 set tournment style games in. When gamesday was in baltimore, myself and a few buddies would go down for the entire weekend. Find gamers friday night and play / goto a pub. Gamesday on saturday, drive home sunday. You also had loads of need events, build/bitz, painting competitions.

They changed the gamesday style and moved it to chicago this year. I haven't been to a gamesday in probably 3 years, I miss them, but I don't have the cash to hike to Chicago. Baltimore was a 3 hour drive so that was ok to me. Overall, I'm not at a point in my life I'd head out to Chicago, but I know plenty of people who are. Consider it a opportunity to meet lots of gamers and check some stuff out. If its local or easy traveling for you, go for it. If its not, i'd look for a Grand Tournment or local Tournment.

I will say: GW is really good with their prize give aways. I won a White Dwarf subscription for a year, half a skaven battalion a friends girlfriend won, along with placing 3rd at WFB Tournment. Not bad for a $50 ticket.

Yeah. Good luck getting any actually useful parts if you don't make a mad rush for it as soon as the doors open.

The UK one's usually pretty good. The GW games being ran by employees are usually pretty good over here as they're all so mad. There's also some pretty good giveaways and deals most years as well. I think the amounts gone down with the recession.

Also, like said before, if you want any bits then go ahead and find it.

Not sure what it will be like down in AU though.

You should do, it's usually pretty good, and your first time/your first time in ages is always the best. Oh yeah, and enter Golden Demon even if your not that good, t's always a shorter queue than the main one and you get to go into the display/meet the pros section an hour early. Everyone says doing that makes me a but I don't really care what they think, it's pretty much the only way not to have to queue for an hour to talk to pros or see other people's golden demon entries.

Terrible.

I have been to one and that was last years and after an hour I was ready to walk out.

It was over crowded and full of people who didn't have manners. Everything that you want to do means queing up for an hour. People just walk straight infront of you when you are talking to someone mainly because they are inbred and the food is terrible. Last year me and my dad went to games day while the missus and me mam went shopping. It was so bad I wished I'd had the day in the bullring with them.

The only thing I really wanted to do was have a look at the new Dark Eldar stuff I went straight to the stand and it was full, 3 hours later it was still the same people there.

I went to my first games day last year. I didn't really want to go but wanted to meet a friend i'd not seen in years.

It wasn't very impressive if you ask me.

I got a Chaos Sorcerer "free" model. Pretty meh model

There were some previews of the unreleased dark eldar minis which I couldn't get near as there was a group of people in front who never seemed to move.

I saw some forgeworld stuff which was cool.

I saw the ultramarines movie preview after waiting an hour or so in a line. It not worth the wait, and that wasn't even GW stuff that was codex running that.

Saw a person in a Space Marine suit and an Ork too. Although that wasn't GW doing that that was the THQ\Relic gaming guys from the Dawn of War that set that up

The only place you could reliably get to see was the stands selling forgeworld/gw stuff. Anyone lingering there was moved on. (would have been nice to see them organising the crowds round the display cabinets)

It's not worth paying to enter. Maybe £5 at the max because you get a model.

We love what we love. Reason does not enter into it. In many ways, unwise love is the truest love. Anyone can love a thing because. That's as easy as putting a penny in your pocket. But to love something despite. To know the flaws and love them too. That is rare and pure and perfect.

This*
I literally made all my money back for one year of spending by building buildings and taking chaos marines and chaos warriors and basicallly I took around 30 marines and 15 chaoswarriors.
and we built 10 buildings
SO in all honesty if you want to get free GW stuff this is the only time you can actually do it.

I imagine there's not much point at all in going anymore, since one of the coolest things they did was showing off previews of new product, and with GW's new dumbass policies they probably won't be doing that. You can see the Golden Demon models online, Forge World is always sold out of whatever you came there to buy, the fun little things they have to do there aren't worth doing if you aren't first in line (and you won't be), about the only real thing left would be the gaming and I imagine even that isn't enjoyable because of all the other people crowded around you and the immature fething geeks yelling "WAAAGH!" at the top of their lungs every three god-damned minutes.

Seriously, the "Waagh!"-ing. Why?

If I had to go I'd probably hit up the build and take and see how many buildings I could make off with, since I don't have enough terrain and GW terrain kits are too damn expensive. If I had recently won the lottery I'd probably hit up the Forge World stand just out of curiosity and see if they had anything left worth buying. Then before I left I'd try to find out who was responsible for Finecast and punch them in the nuts for taking my money and giving me that crap in exchange.

I've seriously never been as disappointed in a GW purchase as I was when I bought those incubi. And I actually bought the stupid $10 webway portal template! I've purchased GW PVA glue before, and even that felt like less of a rip-off.

Heh, I forgot, I actually bought a Games Day ticket one year and never actually went, when it was still in Chicago. Turns out I never actually had the money to go when it came down to it, and I was stupid and didn't think to save up for it. Don't actually know what I did with the ticket though, but I can't find it anymore.

I went last year to the UK one,
If you can drive the car park was only £5, so that could save a bit on the coach fare.
Things i swiped; a got a trucker baseball type hat from the WAR computer game (remember that?) show and tell, a couple of Ultramarines pin badges & a couple of stickers.

I had my small 40k rule book signed by Jervis, my Annihilation Squad book (from poundland) signed by Gav Thorpe (his voice was a lot deeper than I imagined)

The only purchase I made was the Infantryman's Primer.

I tried to engage the Roguetrader RPG guy asked him to compare it to D&D and all I got was "We use 2 D10s."

The Space Marine Trailer wasn't worth the wait, when the woman asked "what do you think?" on the way out,
I said "will be good when they finish it off with the marines glowing eyes and finish it off properly"
She looked like I had taken a poop in her kids cereal.

Your request for the Roguetrader RPG guy to compare it to DnD was not unreasonable. He sounded unprepared.

Given that the Space marine game still looks unfinished, her company is basically taking a dump in our fluff... eg. Bolters that sound like AK-47s, not rapid firing missile launchers.
